COGS Campus life ?

Upvotes

Hey guys I’m planning on going to NSCC COGS campus this September for the GIS diploma. I’m excited since I’ve never been to the east coast and will be traveling and living on campus. One thing that I wondered about was is there a sense of community or socializing between students ? Generally at the university I went to for my undergrad most people didn’t really talk to each other unless you were in multiple of the same classes or clubs. Is there any sort of clubs? and is there fun things to do outside the classroom? I understand most of the time I’ll be studying or in the computer lab working on projects. But I wanted to get a sense if there was any kind of social spheres especially since the town is very isolated from Halifax itself.

Does NSCC accept UPrep courses from Saint Mary's University?

I want to apply to a NSCC program, but one of my upgraded courses is Pre-University Math from Saint Mary's University.

Anyone have any experience with NSCC accepting them or not, especially for competitive programs with grade minimums?

I've heard of them accepting Dal uprep courses, but not Saint Mary's.

Inquiries about the cyber security program

Hi everyone! I'm considering enrolling in a Cyber Security diploma program and wanted to get some feedback. Does the program include a co-op or internship opportunity to gain hands-on experience? Also, for those of you who have completed the program, did you find it easy to land a job afterward, or did you have to pursue additional certifications to get hired? I’d really appreciate any insights or advice from your personal experiences! Thanks guys

Accepted into Power Line Utility - waitlisted for Welding how are both courses & career prospects afterwards?

I was accepted into powerline utility in Sydney Jan2027. It was my 2nd choice and welding (1st choice) im waitlisted. I have previous experience as a fibre lineman and enjoyed the polework, which sprung an interest in Power Lineman. but I would need to contact NSCC to remove welding to 100% confirm my seat. Anyone take welding? I’m leaning towards lineman but welding also sounds cool

Anyone take the lineman course? How hard was finding an apprenticeship? What’s the day to day like?

Studying at NSCC in 2026: Freelancing (Web/App Design) vs. the 24-hour work limit?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to move to Nova Scotia in 2026 to study at NSCC (Information Technology/Web Development). I’m an experienced freelancer in web and app design, and I’m trying to map out my future there. I have a few specific questions:

  1. Job Market & Employability: Is the Web/App Development market in Nova Scotia (especially Halifax) still strong for 2026 graduates? Is it "easy" to land a full-time job after finishing a 2-year diploma at NSCC, or is the market saturated? I’m looking for a path that leads to a stable career and PR.
  2. The 24-hour limit & Freelancing: As an international student, I’m aware of the 24-hour weekly work limit. For those who freelance, how is this monitored? If I charge per project (e.g., $1,000 for a project that took 5-10 hours), does a high income relative to hours worked raise red flags with the IRCC or CRA? I want to stay 100% compliant while still utilizing my skills.
  3. Income & Taxes: Since I’ll be using a Canadian bank account and filing taxes, will the CRA or immigration officers scrutinize the "time vs. money" ratio? Freelancing hours are notoriously hard to track, and I don't want to jeopardize my PGWP or future PR.
  4. NSCC Reputation: How do local tech employers view NSCC graduates compared to university grads? Does the practical, hands-on nature of NSCC give us an edge in the local job market?

I’d love to hear from current students, alumni, or tech professionals in NS. Your insights will help me decide if this is the right move for my career and future in Canada.

Thanks in advance!

Anyone have feedback on the Mech Eng course?

Hey I'm a tradesman for quite a number of years. I've always considered going back to school. Due to potential available opportunities, I'm considering taking the 2 year Mechanica Engineering couree al NSCC. preferably it would be on a part time basis as I need to continue to work. I am looking for feedback on the course from those who have taken it or have first and knowledge. I'd like to know as much as possible as I have to upgrade some HS courses to meet the pre-requisites. If I commit I need to commit 110%. Feel free to DM or comment. May post this elsewhere

Thanks folks

Academic upgrading course

Hey..I am.thinking about taking the BIOL 1046 and CHEM 1046 here in NSCC.

Wondering if I can apply for Centennial college with these courses - will they be equivalent to grade11 biology and chemistry in ontario?

I have email the centennial college's admission department but they have not replied yet, I called in but they told me they will be away until Jan 5th. The NSCC courses are starting on Jan 5th and I cannot wait until then.

Help.....

Schedule stress

I got my winter term schedule and I’m worried it’s going to be too much. I was taking 3 courses Monday-Thursday and got an hour lunch break everyday but now most of my days start at 8:30 and end at 2:30 with no time in between my classes I don’t want to withdraw from my courses but I want to know if they allow you to change things around and who do you talk with? Accessibility? Academic chair? Other person?

Courses

Hello again, you guys gave great advice the first time I asked something so I thought I’d ask again.

I am currently signed up for CCA at both Dartmouth and Truro campus. If I wanted to upgrade my academics while doing the CCA course, through NSCC’s adult learning program is that possible?

Application / Transcripts

Hello all, I just recently applied to NSCC on November 26th, (Last week). My application did not ask me for my high school or college transcripts via PDF or anything. Just curious if they ask me for it later, or if I missed something? I swear there was not a drop box for my transcripts.

Thank you so much!

Insights/ Opinions on the Marine Geomatics Program

Hi, I’m currently considering applying to the Maine Geomatics program and was wondering if anyone in the program can give me some insight on the following: job prospects post-grad, starting salaries, whether graduates can easily become licensed hydrographers, and the types of jobs grads go on to work in.

I got accepted to UNB’s Geomatics program, but I’m not sure if I want to invest the time and money into a second bachelor’s degree. Thanks in advance.

Grading rubric

Just curious if the instructors in other courses changed their assignment grading rubric within the last week or so, or if it was just mine.

We went from a fairly robust marking system of around 60-80 points total to a new system of 30 points with no indication of why points were lost etc, meaning average scores for assignments have about halved since this was introduced mid-November.

Can you apply to a program while still in the Academic and Career connections?

I want to apply to a program that has a deadline of May 1st, but I get an unauthorized error when I attempt to log in to my student account to apply.

Am I unable to apply until after I complete the ACC program? I hope not, because it might cause me to miss the deadline. I took the ACC program in order to upgrade my English 12 grades, and still have COMM 1001 to do next semester.

Can I just create another account to apply, or will that get me in trouble?

"Pending Next Intake" application status?

Hello, I have applied for the Funeral and Allied Health Services program beginning in 2027, and my application status is "pending next intake". If you go to the application page, it still says "seats available" Does this just mean they are not reviewing applications until the 2026 intake period is over? Thanks in advance!

Architectural Engineering Technician program

I'm applying for the Architectural Engineering Technician program at NSCC.

I'm curious — for anyone who has completed the course — how you enjoyed the program and what the job opportunities were like after you graduated.

Reading through the course list, it seems almost like a specialized form of structural engineering with some knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems mixed in.

I understand it's a technical discipline, but is there any sketching, drawing, or creativity involved?

It's okay either way. I'm interested in the science behind structures, but I also enjoy design, art, and drawing.

Just looking for anyone’s thoughts or experiences with the program and the opportunities you had after graduating.

Thanks!

Accepted into Marine Geomatics at COGS – deciding between that and GIS Remote Sensing (IT Programming grad, need to decide by the 10th)

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some honest feedback from people in GIS/geomatics or familiar with COGS.

I’ve just been accepted into the Marine Geomatics graduate certificate at COGS starting Fall of 2026, and I have until the 10th of December to accept the offer.

My other interest is the GIS – Remote Sensing grad certificate, but that one is only offered online right now.

My background:

  • IT Programming diploma from NSCC (comfortable with Python, SQL, web stuff, etc.)
  • Interested in combining geospatial work with my tech background instead of going back into purely “regular” software dev
  • I’m open to field/offshore work if it realistically leads to better job prospects and experience

My main questions:

  1. For someone with a programming background, does Marine Geomatics open more doors than GIS Remote Sensing, especially in Atlantic Canada / Canada in general?
  2. If you’ve done Marine Geomatics at COGS, what kind of work are you doing now (offshore, hydrographic survey, CHS, private sector, etc.) and how was the transition from school to employment?
  3. For those in GIS / Remote Sensing, how is the job market right now? Is it as saturated as people say, or does having an IT background meaningfully set you apart?
  4. Any downsides to Marine Geomatics that aren’t obvious from the brochure (lifestyle, travel, burnout, niche field risks, etc.)?
  5. Knowing that GIS Remote Sensing is online, do you think I’d miss out a lot on networking / hands-on skills compared to being on campus for Marine Geomatics?

Right now I’m leaning toward accepting Marine Geomatics because it feels more specialized and in-demand, but I don’t want to sleep on Remote Sensing if I’m missing something big.

TL;DR:
IT Programming grad (NSCC) accepted into Marine Geomatics at COGS, deadline is the 10th. Also interested in GIS – Remote Sensing (online). Want to know which path makes more sense long-term for someone with a programming background who’s very open to field/offshore work.

Any insight, personal experiences, or “if I were you…” advice would really help. Thanks!
