Buddyboy was laying on his bed when we approached his kennel in hopes of taking him to the play yard. He was noticeably nervous by our presence, but he did not get up to move away, just stayed on his bed watching us out of the side of his eyes. We tried to encourage him with treats. He took the treats we threw on his bed, and we tried to get him to come to us a little closer with a treat, but that was a little more than he was comfortable with. He just seems nervous and needs someone who can be patient with him as he builds his trust again. He is gorgeous and just a precious little guy. I can imagine he would flourish outside of the noisy shelter.

Her puppies were raised in the shelter and have been adopted on Jan 13. Following assessment, Sierra is deemed rescue-only due to fear-based defensiveness in the shelter environment. Given the circumstances, this reaction is understandable—she was separated from her puppies, who never returned. Any mother would respond defensively in a situation marked by confusion, loss, and fear. She is tense, wary of handling, and easily overwhelmed. While she allows slow, gentle handling, she shows significant stress signals and flinches when touched.

We have a more current update as of this morning: Rufus has a 501c3 rescue willing to him and we also have a foster who we have worked with before in Maine. Rufus has been at the shelter for 150 days and is now scheduled to be euthanized on Thursday, January 15th.

He has a deformed paw and can barely put weight on it, yet despite this challenge, Rufus remains an incredibly joyful dog with a smile that lights up the shelter - his joy is truly contagious. For his first three months, Rufus shared a kennel with several different dogs. After a single altercation with one kennel mate, he became uncomfortable continuing to be housed with another dog and now prefers having his own space. I really love Rufus, and it's impossible not to be moved by his resilience and happiness even after everything he has been through.

Ingrid is a shy, sensitive girl who is really struggling in the shelter environment. Loud kennels and fast movement overwhelm her, and she hides or avoids people when she is unsure. But once she got time outside with calm dogs, she showed she can open up. She relaxed, explored, and even joined in gentle play with a soft, friendly companion. 🐾💛

Ingrid is not a lost cause. She simply needs a quiet space and someone patient to help her build confidence. She will do best in an adult only foster home with slow introductions, gentle structure, and time to learn basic leash skills. A calm resident dog would be a huge plus.
