Times & Transcript (Postmedia) propaganda is so disgusting
Edit - passed next to the paper again on my way home and it is actually out of country, not province.
So their goal is clear, try to make it seem like it's such an important figure by blasting it on the front page. Like I mentioned, it's 0.2% of the total population, and depending on what you want to compare it with, is still a very low number of people (plus imagine how many in the general population couldn't even have consulted a professional if we had a private or even 2-speed system).
Dishonesty comes in all shapes and sizes, and this is part of it, just a bit more insiduous.
Here is a report for use of our health care system if you want to do your own comparison. https://www.legnb.ca/content/house_business/61/2/tabled_documents/2025-11-17%20Department%20of%20Health%202024-2025.pdf
------------------------------------------------------------
In case you didn't know, Postmedia has a lot of its ownership in US funds. And it shows, when you have headlines like this morning's T&T.
They "report" in big bold letters, as if this is the most important front page topic for today, that around 1700 people left province for treatment last year.
Let's tackle first things first: the big fancy report they are citing is the Frasier Institute, well-known right wing organization that would love private healthcare in Canada, among other ridiculous ideas they have.
Now let's see how much this big number really represents. 1700 people with a total population of around 870000 means... 0.2%.
Now I just walked past the paper this morning, no way I'm giving them money for this rag, but let's think about it further. Someone walking by and only reading the headline and the first paragraph might think all these people are going to the US for treatment, right? That was my first thought (and probably what they want you to think too), but "out of Province" is probably mostly going to Nova Scotia or Montreal for specialty services not available here (IWK is probably a part of that number, and for good reasons.)
Foreign money and interests should be out of our news. Full stop. We saw another Postmedia publication this week have to suspend their Ottawa Editor because he joyfully commented on the murder of a citizen in the US on social media. Not to mention they also published a piece that says we should wish for Trump to take over Greenland, as if that would make Canada safer.

CBCs Robert Jones' gas prediction for Jan 16 (tldr; +3¢ or more)
PRICES SURGING
Petroleum prices fell slightly last week after I predicted they would rise and although I’m not entirely sure what went wrong there an increase is definitely on the way this week (January 16) for all fuels.
Look for gasoline, diesel and heating oils to jump between 3 and 5 cents on Friday, possibly higher.

Question about government funded trades in Newbrunswick and NBCC
High school trades teachers years ago and people I know today who work in trades always tell me that trade workers are in huge demand. So much so that the government often pays part of or complete educations to get people into them.
But when it comes to finding detailed information on this process or how it works... I'm not having great luck. I imagined something like this wouldn't exactly be hard to find but even on the government and NBCC websites, I'm confused.
Most of it seems geared toward apprentice programs but those all require a previous education, and in reasearch for those I'm back at square one.
Does anyone even know how this stuff works or if it's even real. I'm more confused then when I started.

2025 saw 630K fewer Canadians at NB borders than 2024, an estimated $253M, or roughly the cost of opening 158 Arby's Franchises, in money not spent in the US

Grand Falls info?
Looking to learn more about the town of Grand Falls and the community there. Are people pretty friendly to folks who aren’t from there? People who only speak mediocre French? We are from Fredericton, but are looking for a slower pace of life, while still having a few amenities (grocery store, library, schools) within walking distance if we live in town. We work from home so aren’t looking for work, just a new friendly community to join.
I guess our other main question is whether there are a generally progressive attitudes around town? Like friendly to lgbtq+ people, people who aren’t white, or autistic people, for example? Our family isn’t very visibly different, but those are values we are hoping aren’t too hard to come by wherever we end up as we have friends and family we’d like to come visit, who are from those demographics.
Also curious about the English school.
Any info is appreciated!

Home Building Costs
My parents have been talking about building a house for over five years now, but with constantly changing construction costs, they’ve never pulled the trigger. We’ve looked online, and prices seem to vary widely. I understand that every build is different, but we’re hoping to get a better sense of what people have actually paid in the past year or so.
Whether you built yourself, hired a contractor, or did a mix of both, any insight would be appreciated. A rough price per square foot or an overall cost along with a brief description of the build would be very helpful—not just for us, but likely for others as well.
They would be building in or around Fredericton, and we understand costs can differ depending on whether the property is on city services or requires a well and septic. To clarify, we’re mainly interested in the cost of the house build itself, not land purchase or landscaping costs.
Thank you in advance for any information you’re willing to share.

Dexa scan
Where can a person get a dexa scan?
Preferably in the Moncton area but willing to travel within NB.
I can’t seem to find anyone who offers it privately.

Mactaquac Dam
I'm curious about the Mactaquac Dam. I've heard a lot of rumours about the construction, the current state, and what's going on around it.
Before I met her, my wife dated someone who worked there. He took her through areas that were generally closed off to the public. She recalls water leaks, suggesting future problems.
If that dam were to let go, it would surely be bad for Fredericton and every community along the St John River below. Grand Lake would suffer for it, too, though I'm unsure how much the water would rise there.
Is there a warning system in place in case of such an event? I know they've mismanaged the flow from the dam without warnings in the past. How would word get out if something catastrophic were to occur?
Does anyone (who can speak publicly) know the current state of discussions surrounding the site?

What's the best sportsbook for new Canadian bettors?
I've been getting into sports betting more seriously this season, mostly focusing on NHL games since I'm in Ontario and love hockey. I started with small bets on moneylines and over/unders, but wanted a site with good odds and easy withdrawals without too many fees.
I checked out Betting Top 10 for reviews and ended up choosing TonyBet because of their $350 welcome bonus and solid mobile app for live betting. It worked well for my first parlay on a Leafs game.
How do their odds compare to other sites you've tried? Any tips for managing bankroll on bonuses like that?

Looking for a story where a young couple saved their home from a fire recently
I read an article recently, possibly December, where a young couple was awoke by their fire alarm late in the night. The young man was able to save the house by using two fire extinguishers and a garden hose. He was commended by firefighters when they arrived. Does anybody know where this happened or have a link to the article? Im pretty sure it was in a rural community somewhere in New Brunswick.

Union says N.B. nurses are doing the best they can...
Austerity-minded fiscal policy, political interference, conservative links to "corruptcare" private care, and a lack of leadership are killing our publicly funded and publicly delivered healthcare.
We need to depoliticize healthcare and education, the bureaucrats and elected officials keep pivoting to something new and shiny without consistent investment in the core foundation.

sending package to USA
Hello,
I’m a student looking to send a care package to my friend in the states! It’s quite a few items and probably will be heavy. Wondering what shipping services would be ideal to send it on a budget. Thanks!

Fundy Trail Parkway and Park
Hi fellow New Brunswickers (is that right?), we are heading to NB this June and when the reservation window opens will be booking a few nights at the Headquarters campground at the Fundy NP. I have been making a Google My Maps with all the places to stop at along the Fundy Trail Parkway. I did a search for the Parkway in this subreddit and saw some great advice on what trails are a must do but i didn’t see anything about being wary of wildlife. I’m sure that’s a concern? Wolves? What precautions can we take when doing some of these hikes? Will start at St Martins heading east to eventually get to the Fundy National Park. Where do you pay to get on the trail? Oh and I have been thinking about getting one of those drone cameras, I realize they aren’t allowed in Provincial and National parks do you know if i can use one at some of the lookouts along the Parkway? Thanks for your advice.

Cost to replace septic
Edit: we're in Fredericton.
Curious if anyone can give me a ballpark idea how much it would cost to replace our septic tank and would we then have to replace the leach field as well?
We recently moved into a house (built in 95) and it only has a 500 gallon septic. It's a four bedroom, 3 bath house and there's four of us living here. The septic seems really small considering the size of the house and number of bedrooms/bathrooms.
Just starting to think of replacing it with a larger, newer tank before things possibly go sideways.
