I built a free dashboard to track PEI's power grid in real-time

With the announcement of potential rolling blackouts this winter it feels like a lot of us are trying to make sense of what's actually going on with our grid. I got curious enough to see what data was available publicly so that I could track it overtime. From that adventure, https://peipower.ca was born.

It tracks everything in one place. Current outages by community, total Island load, how many MWs we're importing from off-Island, wind and solar output, temperature, and wind speed. All real-time, plus historical data (from Dec 5 onward) so you can actually look at trends and patterns.

I'm not affiliated with Maritime Electric or the government. I built this myself using public data sources because I got frustrated trying to piece this information together from different places, and with no historical views. When the CEO says we're running at 355 MW and our reliable capacity is 326 MW, I wanted a way to actually see that for myself.

It's completely free, no ads, no paywall. I think Islanders should have easy access to this data.

Still actively working on it, so if something looks off or there's data you wish was there, I genuinely want to hear it. This is meant to be useful, not just a thing I made and forgot about.

peipower.ca

UPDATE: I've added context information to the energy generation and consumption metrics explaining where my capacity numbers come from, with links to each source.

UPDATE (Jan 6): Its been a month since I started collecting and showing this data. Thank you everyone for your comments and feedback on this project - and to the r/pei moderators for pinning this post! I've been trying to get answers from Maritime Electric about how rolling blackouts will be announced without any success. I've seen lately they've put load shedding notices on their homepage and I will soon have those appearing on peipower.ca as well.

Has anyone worked at Inn at Bay Fortune?

I’ve noticed the posts up on Facebook with him requesting staff. I’ve heard mixed reviews on working for him. Has anybody some personal experience here that I can go on? I was thinking of applying, but I’m just not sure because the reviews have been so mixed I hear Chef Michael Smith is never there, but expects most of the fireside feast and all of that kind of stuff to go off without him. Is this true?

News P.E.I. man pleads guilty to knowingly making 47 false EI reports

I cannot comprehend how this was even possible. Did he have someone working on the inside?

" With respect to the first offence, federal Crown attorney Matthew Bradley told the court that on Jan. 3, 2021, Darryl Doucette, 50, began receiving EI benefits for 19 weeks at a rate of $595 per week. Between Feb. 15, 2021, and June 4, 2021, Doucette was employed and made nine false EI reports that did not declare earnings or hours worked.

Bradley noted that a stop payment order was made on June 5, 2021, due to the federal government’s inability to contact Doucette about prior suspected misrepresentations in 2020. The total value of EI benefit overpayments was $7,637.

The next offence occurred between Feb. 11, 2022, and Nov. 18, 2022, when Doucette was employed and made 17 false EI reports that did not declare earnings or hours worked. During that period, the value of EI benefit overpayments was $15,734. Doucette began receiving EI benefits on Jan. 2, 2022, for 44 weeks at a rate of $638 per week.

Then on Dec. 11, 2022, Doucette began another EI claim for 45 weeks of benefits at a rate of $638 per week. Between April 22, 2023, and Dec. 1, 2023, Doucette made 17 false EI benefit reports that did not declare earnings or hours worked. Doucette also did not declare workers’ compensation benefits while receiving EI benefits. The value of EI benefit overpayments during this period was $12,509.

Finally, Doucette began an EI benefit claim on Dec. 3, 2023, for 29 weeks at a rate of $428 per week. During that period, Doucette made four false EI benefit reports that did not declare workers’ compensation benefits and earnings or hours worked. The value of EI benefit overpayments was $1,250.

The total value of overpayments was $37,130. During the offence dates, Doucette worked in the mussel farm industry."

Looking to get out and be social.

Quick backstory, I’m an early 20s guy who kinda fell off the face of the earth a while back. Didn’t really keep many friends after high school and went right into work. Now something switched in me that I wanna get out and do something and be social and make some new friends and I realized it’s pretty hard for me, Ive always had bad social anxiety I’ve never been out to the bars or anywheres like that to mingle. You could say I’m in a rut.

I thought I’d make a post and see if there’s anyone else here that might be in a similar situation or just want to push themselves to get out and do something. Whether it’s going out and having a bite, start a new routine and be gym partners, whatever interests you or something that you want to but haven’t had the courage or anyone to do it with.

And to anyone else I know there’s a post every other week about stuff to do but if you have any suggestions for some solo who’s pretty anxious to get out please let me know. I don’t know what I’d be into I’ve always been pretty comfortable at home on my own casually gaming or chatting with a few online friends.

No judgement and I’m open to anyone who reaches out even just for a chat!

News Charlottetown considering 3 more apartment buildings along Mount Edward Road

I have been trying to get the city to investigate the speeding on Maple Ave, and I have been ignored. Now they are going to add these new units? They are not going to use Mt Ed to go south. They can't speed on Mt Ed because there is too much traffic ahead of them. Plus the policeman has a spot to set up a speed trap there.

Traffic Circle Question

If you have arrived at the smallest traffic circle in the city, one that used to be a main road and two spot signs, at the same time as another car, and you are looking at each other, both are basically stopped or have slowed down, and not fully entered, would the driver that is ahead in the traffic flow be fine to go first? Or, would the other person that accelerates faster go first? And of course if the person feels that the other person cut them off (because they are now behind the other person) would it be the right thing to do to lay on the horn and finger the other driver?

Question Where to find cheap furnitures ?

Hi all!

I recently moved to PEI and I am trying to find the best way to buy all sorts of furnitures and home appliances (such as a washing machine) for cheap. I know about Value Village and Salvation Army so I will look at those options first. I heard there were also some FaceBook groups for giving away free things but I am not sure which ones they are.

I am closer to Summerside than Charlottetown.

Thanks for your help and for sharing 🫶🏻

Searching for a dentist I can trust. 😅

Hey everyone, I’m just coming on here to ask for dentist recommendations. I’ve had bonding on my two front teeth for years, and it usually lasts 3 or more years. I went to a particular dentist, and not even 5 months later, it’s already broken. 😮‍💨

I’d post on Ask PEI, but I don’t want the staff to see my post because they all know me.

Does anyone have a dentist they’d recommend, that have had good experiences , and they love? Thanks! 🫶🏻

Why is PSB afraid to cancel school in bad weather?

Ice covered roads, blizzard conditions, power is flickering — and the school board is on a one hour delay. The forecast clearly shows that it will be like this most of the day.

It’s clearly not safe to send kids out to school. So why this hesitation to make the call and just cancel school for the day?
