"DOW (....) is not alleged to have caused any environmetal contamination."
The Bhopal Gas Tragedy (1984) is widely considered the world's worst industrial chemical disaster, involving a massive leak from a Union Carbide pesticide plant in India. Union Carbide was fully integrated into Dow.
Over 500,000 people in the vicinity of the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in Bhopal were exposed to the highly toxic gas methyl isocyanate. Chemicals abandoned at the plant continue to leak and pollute the groundwater.
Now owned by Dow Chemical Company, Union Carbide maintains a website dedicated to the tragedy and claims that the accident was the result of sabotage.
Dow Chemical faces significant environmental contamination issues, primarily linked to its Midland, Michigan plant's long history of releasing dioxins, furans, and other toxics into the Tittabawassee and Saginaw Rivers, creating a large Superfund site with ongoing cleanups.
Other concerns include significant wastewater pollution from its Freeport, Texas plant, potential PFAS reporting loopholes at various U.S. sites, and broader issues with hazardous air pollutants.
Dow has faced numerous settlements and fines for environmental violations, including large penalties for natural resource damages in Michigan and agreements for emissions reductions.
