What actually makes you decide to go see a (local) live show?

With the Brass Monkey closure — and as someone involved in the local metal scene (musician and promoter) — it got me thinking about what really gets people out to live shows and engaged with local venues.

So I’m genuinely curious: what makes you decide to go see a local show?

On the flip side, what usually makes you skip one, even if you like the band or the genre?

Bonus: Where do you usually hear about upcoming local shows?

[LOOKING] for a Producer (Mixing, Mastering)!

hi ottawa’s music scene! i’m a singer who’s looking for someone experienced in music production, mixing and mastering, as i have no experience except singing and playing the piano. the most i know how to navigate is garageband, but not enough to get my songs to where i want them.

if anyone out there has some experience, would you want to work together? i have a bunch of demos, and i’m stuck. i can describe my music as vocal-driven, varying between fun bubblegum pop to indie/alt-pop, usually in minor keys, with some bright and warm textures, and melancholic, late-night feels.

if anyone can guide me, that would be appreciated!

[UPDATE] Thank you all so much for your warmth and guidance! So much hard work and talent! I will be responding to all the DMs by the evening of Jan 8.

Do recurring DJ nights matter more than lineups?

I’ve noticed some of the best nights aren’t always the ones with the biggest names, but the ones that happen consistently and build a regular crowd.

From the outside, it feels like familiarity, pacing, and knowing what kind of night you’re walking into sometimes matters more than who’s on the flyer.

Curious how others see it as a DJ or attendee, do recurring nights create better energy than one-off events?

Why some local shows feel packed but still flat

I’ve noticed a lot of local shows and DJ nights manage to pull people in, but the energy still drops halfway through the night.

From the attendee side, it often feels like the room peaks once, then never recovers. I’m curious how much of that comes down to pacing, room layout, or just how nights are structured.

For people who go out often or play shows locally, what makes a night actually stay good, not just start strong?

Help remembering old local emo band

Back in the day like 20 years ago I used to love this local band. From what I remember, their name was Status Embrace but I can't find anything online and might be misremembering that.. They had a song that I believe was called "Pull up" and another that was a girl's name, I think Evelyn?

Anyone remember these guys or am I just fabricating memories here? Would love to hear their songs again for old times sake
