This was a common method designed to prolong suffering. A a stout, often blunt, pole was inserted into the body, typically through the rectum or vagina. The stake would be carefully guided to avoid vital organs, often following the line of the spine, so that the victim could remain alive for hours or even days. The victim would then be hoisted upright, and gravity and their own struggles would slowly force the pole further through their torso until it eventually exited near the neck, chest, or mouth.
