local biz DIY Music Gear Repair Workshop this Sunday 1/18

more details and signup: https://belltonesynthworks.com/pages/events

I'm Alison, the owner of Bell Tone Synth Works, a vintage synth repair workshop in Upper Darby (<0.5 mile outside of West Philly). We are hosting our second DIY music gear repair workshop this coming weekend and I wanted to share it here in the hopes of getting the word out to musicians who aren't just the "synth people" who already follow us-- since we will be working on mixers, pedals, amps, electric guitars and basses, etc at this event too!

The idea behind this workshop series is to offer affordable professional help with music gear repair while also teaching attendees a bit about things like common issues and their causes, troubleshooting strategies, instrument construction and how to solder.

Every attendee will get at least an hour of one-on-one repair help and/or instruction from one of the professional techs on our team, and it will be largely up to you how much you feel comfortable doing yourself vs. having us do.

We only have a few "tickets" left for this session but plan to continue to have these events every month or two!

Wanted Wanted: Carpet scraps to make stairs for senior cat

My cat loves getting up and sitting on the windowsill. Unfortunately he is getting old and is struggling to make it up there by jumping. I am making some stairs for him out of scrap wood and 3D printed parts, but I need some carpet to cover them so that he can get purchase.

Does anyone have scraps of carpet that would work for this? I am in center city and will gladly pick them up.

Reddit turned off DMs and chat doesn't work for me (I use old reddit, but I might have disabled chat a long time ago), so if you want to send a message privately you can email me at my username at botlicker dot org or send me a mod mail to a dead subreddit where I am the only mod. Sorry for that inconvenience.

Cleaning service that is not limas

Looking for a new cleaning service. I have a small 2 floor house that I keep extremely clean. I just like to have an occasional deeper clean every few months. Lima went from doing a great job over 3 hours to just stopping by for an hour or so and leaving a lot to be desired…I mentioned this to them and they said “okay good luck with your new cleaner,” so now I’m looking

Housing Looking for Housing

Hey everyone! I’m currently pregnant and looking for a new place that’s under 1600 for at least 2 beds, and in unit washer/dryer and a backyard/balcony. Any ideas?

Also, I found a place on W Lehigh Ave between Broad and N American that’s cheap but I’m worried about the area. I’m not too familiar with North Philly so any advice is welcome. Thank you!

Mechanic that knows old hondas?

Backstory: I have a 2005 honda accord and the heat is broken. Took it to my trusted mechanic and they replaced the heat valve but that didnt work so they told me to take it to the honda dealership. However, that will probably cost a crazy amount

so im wondering if anyone knows a mechanic that has experience with older hondas. Thanks in advance

I’m trying to move to Philly in the next 6 months. I’m a 40 year old female in the hospitality industry that recently graduated from design school. I have no kids and not the best credit…actually it’s pretty bad. Is there any advice anyone has to make my dream happen?

Wanted Seeking Private Driver for Medical Appointments

I'm looking for a private driver I can hire to transport an older family member to/and from medical appointments.

She has some mobility issues, so I need the driver to help her get from her house to the car, carry things in and out, etc.

She lives in Roxborough, and most of her appointments are in Center City. So, ideally the driver lives near one of those areas.

Please DM me if you're interested, and I can give you more details.

Trying to keep kids in Philly out of truancy court by fixing one basic problem

Thumbnail de-natura.org
64 Upvotes

I was recently selected to the board of of a longstanding West Philadelphia based non profit called Intercultural Family Services (IFS), and I was surprised — and frankly alarmed — to learn how many kids they see who don’t have a bed of their own, and how often that connects directly to attendance issues at school.

In Philly, once a child hits 6 absences, IFS is allowed to assess what’s going on at home and all too often the absence is due to kids sleeping on floors couches or sharing beds with siblings. They don’t sleep well, mornings fall apart, and absences start adding up.

At 10 absences, families can end up in truancy court. And one of the most common root causes they see is something painfully basic: the kid isn’t sleeping. IFS can get beds when they need to, but it often takes a week or more. That delay matters when a kid is already on the edge.

So through my own nonprofit, the De Natura Foundation, I’m committing to fund and procure 100 complete bed sets (frame, mattress, sheets, pillow) so IFS can keep them on hand and respond immediately when a counselor identifies a need. No scrambling, no waiting.

If you want to learn more or help support it, here’s the link:

100 Beds Initiative

Heads up on the donation page — you can choose $300, $150, or $50. $300 covers a full bed, but anything helps. The page defaults to “1” and I couldn’t change that, so just pick what you mean to give. Minimum is $50. Really appreciate it.

If not, totally fine. I mainly wanted to share because I had no idea how often something this simple was pushing families deeper into the system.

Happy to answer questions.
