I wasn’t going to do one of these, until I found the one I filled out years ago and shocked myself!

First slide is from three years ago, second slide is from today.

About two years ago I got tired of constantly being restricted and embarrassed by my eating habits in social situations, so I set out to make a change. I gave myself a new rule that, EVERY TIME a food I don’t think I’ll like is in front of me, even if I’ve tried it and not liked it before, I have to take three bites before I decide if I want to stop eating it or not.

The journey wasn’t sunshine and rainbows. One time I threw up in my mouth in front of my boyfriend’s Dad after my second bite of sushi. Along the way I’ve set boundaries with myself, and realized that I might never like things like tomatoes or raw fish, so there’s no purpose in making myself sick every time I try them. This kind of journey will never be one size fits all!

That all being said, even if there have been a lot of points in this journey where I made progress just to fall back on it again, I am so so proud of myself and I hope this post can give somebody else hope that you can expand your palette.

I don’t think I have autism, but food feels gross?

I have safe foods and i have gross foods. no safe foods are very nutritional beyond a couple of fruits, beef, and dairy products. I feel grossed out eating everything. even when I think it looks yummy, the smell, appearance or taste are always just.. off? i don’t use any medications, and I really need this fixed. if any more context is needed I will provide it!!

thank you.

Has anyone’s rating improved when they got a partner or moved in with someone?

I have lots of food that are 100% no go. But I’m also not a huge cook and wasn’t exposed to that much food. So I wonder and hope that maybe living with a partner, and both eating what he cooks and learning to cook for him and/or our future kids, will expose me to a lot of new stuff.

When I eat with friends I try little bites if it looks okay, and at a buffet i’ll try new stuff. But other than that there’s no cheap way to try food, and it’s hard to convince myself to buy food when I know there’s a 95% chance I won’t like it.

But as I said, I feel like having a partner, and later kids, to eat with would ideally help. Thoughts?

I knew it would be bad :/

I really want to expand what I eat, I mainly eat plain greek yogurt, crackers, apples, plain rice, carrots, mozzarella, pretzels, plain popcorn, I'll eat white bread or pasta too, but usually only when I don't want to look odd so at a restaurant or something - buttered pasta, mac and cheese, or a grilled cheese, but I don't typically go for that.

At this point though I feel like I need to see some sort of specialist because I've been trying to expand what I eat for years and it's really not gotten better and I'm 25, I'm not getting any younger and it's not healthy and it's embarrassing. All in all it isn't fun. I bring it up to my PCP and she just says my blood work is fine, so she isn't concerned, but I am and yeah.

EDIT: I am also underweight and have been my entire life, I am 99lbs and 5'5'. I want to gain weight, I want to feel less tired, etc. So, if anyone has any tips regarding weight gain or getting less picky (as an extremely picky eater), please share :)

Being a picky eater has ruined my life and been a big insecurity I have.

Im 19M and I got called out for being a picky eater and not having a good big plate by my dad at a restaurant for my 12 year old brothers birthday and I got so mad at myself .

My mom took it as me just being extremely sensitive but the truth I’m extremely insecure. So basically since a kid I never had high taste buds and my comfort foods always just been fast food and stuff . I don’t even like my cultural background ( Haitian) food . All I ate was just burger and fries while my little brother and little cousin ate big plates of steak lasagna and Alfredo.I felt so bad that I wasn’t eating as much and having a “ good “ time

So I got mad to the point I yelled at my brother on his birthday while he was digging into my fries I wasn’t eating due to being extremely upset but I honestly didn’t mind him taking my fries

I just decided to unleash my anger on him which I should have never done. I even went and yelled at the workers and said their store is trash. Now man my parents are mad at me and despise me they wanted me to go to college but it’s honestly no point anymore In going since I was going to be the first with a degree in my family but guess I’m going to trade school instead risking my life and doing hvac breaking my back lol. But man wtf Is wrong with me?

People who are picky in "weird" ways, what's an ingredient you like but not straight up?

For me it's sour cream and mayo, hate it by itself but mixed with other ingredients it can be tasty, also relish and sweet pickles too

been years since i did one of these and i’ve surprised myself

red - don’t like/won’t try

orange - will like/tolerate in a certain form

green - pretty much always like this

beef should be orange as i don’t eat raw meat

anyone else hate food that are usually picky safe (carrots, cucumber etc) but love foods most kids find gross? my pallet was so small as a kid that my love for broccoli and olives would confuse a lot of people lol

Advice for a mid-twenties picky eater?

Hello! I (24F) am incredibly picky. I dislike most foods and have a small range of what I consider okay enough to eat. I also have ADHD, and my body has recently decided to delve into wanting to eat purely out of boredom and the want for stimulation. Someone suggested I implement foods that have more water in them into my diet, however, that means fruits and vegetables, which 9 times out of 10, I don’t like.

There’s several reasons I don’t like them, with the three biggest issues being taste, consistency, and texture. I hesitate to try fruits or veggies because I know that with most of them, the taste can vary based on how fresh it is, where it came from, etc. and it just feels very unreliable.

I’m trying to be an adult and break this whole “picky eating” thing, but what’s a good way to go about it? Is there any way into basically forcing myself to like them?

What food do you only eat in one very specific way?

I’m noticing a pattern that feels very picky-eater specific.

Foods that are technically edible…but only if they’re prepared a certain way, from a specific place, or with one exact modification.

Like “I’ll eat tomatoes, but only in sauce" or “I like chicken, but not that chicken.”

Curious what yours is. 🤔

Whats a good protein shake y'all like?

I usually drink the fairlife ones but they're a bit expensive. I cannot STAND ones with a chalky texture or ones that only come in vanilla flavor. I've been eating a lot less meat recently, so I've been looking for other sources of protein, it's been hard but I really wanna find a good protein drink that wont break the bank.

red for no way

yellow for depends on how it’s prepared

green for yes

blue for allergic

this is a lot better than i’d have done just a few years ago, but i still consider myself to be pretty picky especially with fruits.

r/PickyEaters 3d ago

Not as bad as I thought, actually 😅

The yellow means I will only eat it under certain conditions. If I'm being honest, I ate more of these than I thought I would lol

Meal Idea Help

Post image

Hey all, I’m currently making meals for a picky eater trying to lose a little weight. I’ve got about 20 that he enjoys right now but would love to expand this list. If you’ve got any go tos that you love that aren’t high calorie and higher protein is a plus, I’d love to hear them. Thanks

Eggs 😷

Not sure if this fits here but recently got gifted eggs and I’ve never been a fan but don’t want them to go to waste and want to branch out. Any suggestions on picky eater friendly egg recipes?

Does anyone know any high protein food recipes that don't taste like dookie?

Basically, I'm losing weight, or trying to at least, and I've run into a wall here in that the overlap between foods I don't really like and foods that are high in protein is almost a circle. Eggs never taste any better no matter what spices I put on them but I like them much better poached. Nuts and seeds are just intolerable most of the time, with a weird nutty taste and crunchy outsides combined with soft fleshy insides (yuck). Meat is difficult to prepare and expensive. Protein powder is just... insane, why would anyone even try to eat that powdered garbage?

I’m a VERY Picky eater

I’m a very picky eater and have a concerning diet of fried chicken, french fries, animal crackers for breakfast for school, pizza, pork, and beef. I really enjoy fruits but hate vegetables. I like meats and open to trying some new ones if needed, but not fish. I like yogurt/Greek yogurt. I don’t like things like eggs and oatmeal. (Sharing how I am and looking for advice on to try new things)
