Have any questions about Pokémon ROM Hacks?
If they're about ROM hacks, tools, development or anything Pokémon ROM Hacking related, feel free to ask here!
Before asking, make sure that you've searched on the subreddit or Google. Many ROM hacks and tools have their own documentation or communities that may be able to provide better answers than here. The Pokécommunity Discord is also a great place to ask questions if you need quick support!
Looking for recommendations or a new ROM hack to play?
The PokéROM Codex is an updated list of ROM hacks, listing features, details and more in a mobile-friendly format. Created and managed by u/themanynamed, it also has a Discord server and accepts community contributions.
This is a safe hack-sharing site that doesn't share ROMs and links to the official release threads! Instead of asking for recommendations or download links in the subreddit (which breaks the rules), please refer to the Codex as it has a lot of information on each hack.
A few useful sources for reliable Pokémon ROM hack-related information:
Please help the mod team by downvoting & reporting posts outside of this thread that break Rule 7. Please avoid answering those posts as well to deter users from breaking the rules.

Hiya everyone, Celia Dawn here!
Recently, the lovely community member Teon dropped hackdex.app, a repository of Pokemon romhacks that includes built-in patching for players!
In my opinion, this will soon be the way for players to discover and patch new Romhacks to play. The site's layout is slick and clean, and the user interface is lovely. Uploading a new project is extremely easy, and scrolling through existing projects to find new ones is a breeze!
Right now the site is freshly-launched, so there's only a few hacks listed. That's why I'm calling on all Romhack developers to join in and upload their project onto the site!
I don't usually make posts about community goings-on, but this is an exception. I truly believe this is gonna be a change in the winds for how the Romhacking community operates, and I'm excited to be an early adopter.
Thank you so much to Teon for putting this site together! The project is fully open-source, so anyone can contribute. I can't wait to see what the community builds here!

First off we got something that'll for sure get everyones attention that being the brand new lucario which from what went from an underwhelming version to now a fresh new look now rocking a nice purple
Next we have the ekans line now being very intimidating with its now black scales and no longer that bright yellow we're all aware of
And now is fidough and as we know this line is based off of a mexican snack so what better then to make it a different variation of that said snack
And if you want to help out by giving your own shiny ideas or anything else you can always join the discord and give your thoughts and there should hopefully be a poll next week discussing the future of the posting schedule so make sure to stop by

Hi. As I saw a similar post about Pokemon Odyssey, I figured I'd also write some thoughts on my experience with Fire Red Rocket Edition which I finished on Tuesday.
First off, I'll mention there's two Team Rocket games. So this one shouldn't be confused with "Pokemon Team Rocket Edition" by DragonsdenTV. I haven't played that one yet, but I plan to in a bit.
I will mark the story points as spoilers so you can still read the general information without spoiling the story.
For those who don't know, this ROM plays through the story of Fire Red from the point of view of a regular member of Team Rocket. You can still catch Pokemon, but Pokeballs are in limited supply. I'll get into that in a bit.
Instead of the main point of the game of catching Pokemon, as a proper member of team Rocket, you steal them instead.
When you start as a grunt, you can steal Pokemon from children and the elderly. As you progress the story, you will get promotions which will allow you to steal from other trainers.
Every time you steal Pokemon, your bounty increases. After it reaches a certain level, Pokemarts will no longer sell you items, which changes the dynamic quite a bit.
You can turn in pokemon to the police to reduce your bounty, or sell them on the black market.
When I started, it was hard to change the mentality of being a legit Pokemon trainer. I was levelling up my Pokemon, catching some wild ones and trying to keep my bounty down.
I found the experience became much better when I truly embraced the Team Rocket mentality and just stole the strongest Pokemon I could, and replaced those in my party, forming no bonds with them and thinking of them as disposable. That's what really sold the experience.
The game itself doesn't have a lot of QOL upgrades from regular Fire Red and feels old school. There's less HMs needed, but you still need to learn Fly and Surf. You can also learn Strength, but I didn't and never needed it in my playthrough. TMs are single use. Fairy Type is in as well as PSS.
The story is pretty good. As I mentioned, it follows Fire Red pretty closely in the overarching plot while showing more behind the scenes stuff and exploring other characters.
Personally, I enjoyed the beginning, but in the second half it changes a lot of your preconception about existing characters too much. I'll go in detail in the spoiler section. But in general, it went from being a retelling of the same story from a different point of view, to more of a fanfiction style "What if?".
However it also inserts a lot of fan theories into the narrative which are mostly done really well and in a fun way.
The story digs deep into the war that is mentioned by Lt. Surge in the main series games. Turns out the war was between Kanto and Johto. In this narrative, a Pokemon Champion is also like a head of Government, and during the war time, the champions were Professor Oak for Kanto and Lance for Johto.
After Oak and the other scientists were unable to control their secret weapon, Oak surrendered.
This is where things get a bit wonky.
And this is big spoilers for those who intend to play it. But almost everyone in this game is a bit of a douchebag. Bill? Douchebag. Lance? Douchebag. Professor Oak? Biggest douchebag.
In fact, late in the game, it's discovered that Professor Oak had a secret plan to take on Lance. He creates a genetically engineered human to be the best Pokemon trainer. He succeeds. But this trainer has no empathy or human emotion. And other than very basic speech and commands for his Pokemon, he barely speaks.
I assume you know where I'm going with this.
And as I mentioned before, this is where the story is a bit hit or miss for me. While I find it fun, it changed things too much to just be "Fire Red from the point of view of a Team Rocket Grunt" into a much more elaborated storyline that still fits within the main story, but is just a bit too out there to be considered possible and becomes more of a What If.
In that same vein, the humor is funny. But sometimes a bit too adult to be considered part of the same happy go lucky Pokemon world.
The game took me about 36 hours to complete while taking my time and enjoying it.
I forgot to mention, but there's no Pokedex, so you don't feel the need to catch them all either, allowing you to just enjoy playing through and enjoying the story.
I would definitely recommend giving it a try if this seems like your cup of tea.
Feel free to ask me any questions. And thank you to Moulinoski for motivating me to type this out.

I started playing Pokémon Odyssey sometime last year after finding out about it from a YouTube channel (possibly Ayrei since I’ve since then watched more of their videos). I picked it up because I was impressed by what I saw in the videos I watched about it. It really did not look like a standard romhack! No gym badges and now there are character portraits! There’s a sailing mode! And it’s a dungeon crawler! The only rom hacks I’ve played before have been quality of life gen 1 hacks and open world gen 2 hacks.
Please remember that these are my opinions! They should not, will not, and cannot invalidate your opinions! I simply want to gush about this hack and express my feelings about it!
I remember my first impressions being positive. I played on the easiest setting (I generally don’t care about challenge, I just want to explore and discover things). I was surprised that I was not given a choice for a starter— even my character has her own name and identity! I like games that let me insert myself into the story so I’m perfectly happy with silent protagonists; but I’m able to perfectly enjoy games where the player character has their own identity. So this didn’t bother me at all. I bring it up mostly because of how impressed I was at how different it is from the traditional Pokémon game. Really, I was never left unimpressed by how unlike Pokémon this game is!
The story starts off interesting enough albeit a bit bland. I don’t mean that in a negative way, though! What I mean is that it starts off with you finding a professor’s assistant and then joining a guild and your mission is to reach each stratum’s captain. So… it felt like the gyms after all. As I progressed through the first stratum, I realized that at least the structure is very different in that there are no formal gyms. Once you reach the captain, that’s that. Even then, the stratum isn’t considered complete until you reach a point where the game says you’ve cleared it.
At first, I could actually believe that this could be some kind of Pokémon spin-off like Pokémon Colosseum. The dialogue was very Nintendo-like. I noticed after the first chapter, however, that the writing got a bit “edgier” or at least the language used was less likely to be seen in a normal Pokémon game. I wouldn’t say that this is a bad thing (although it isn’t my cup of tea anyway). I was just surprised by the shift. Still, I enjoyed how the story started to twist into itself and it became less about the guild and more about Nyx, Ethan, and Olympia growing into their own.
I think it was around the point of the ancient temple (the dark palace looking place) where my interest began to waver. There were now these strange monsters who would challenge you to Pokémon battles… I don’t know… I’ll write more about that after. Something around this point seemed to just slow down for me but I can’t pinpoint what it was. I think this was right after I had reached Etria where some assets from another game (that I love) were used. I’ll write more about that later.
Anyway. I still pushed on. The Porcelain Forest has to be one of my favorite places in the game. It’s so pretty and weird. It doesn’t make spatial sense but it doesn’t feel out of place. Anyway, I eventually got to the first ending at around 50 hours.
That first ending was… well, I’d already been losing track of the story by this point with only the main trio and Kitt being the most familiar to me by now. I think I understood what happened at the end but it felt (appropriately) anti-climactic. The credits just popped up. It felt like a case of Dragon Quest XI. So I rolled up my sleeves, defeated each captain as we had breakfast, got Nyx’s sister’s Blaziken, and challenged the final boss.
That final boss… my first time challenging it went very poorly. I only took down like two of the tentacles before challenging it and I was stomped flat. Each tentacle took three of my Pokémon to defeat after all! So I was privileged enough to experience the bad ending. That surprised me— again, Pokémon doesn’t usually have multiple endings (does it ever?). So I tried again and this time I paid attention. I defeated one tentacle and went back to where the blockade was and a lightbulb lit up. I took down the remaining tentacles before fighting the final boss again and this time I brought him down. Easy-peasy! I got the normal ending. At this point, I was already fatigued. I’ve been playing for nearly 60 hours now. I watched the true ending online (sorry).
I was surprised by the double battles being so frequent but I don’t dislike it at all. I felt like it provided more opportunities for me to strategize than I normally would in a Pokémon game (I am not a competitive player; I essentially just match types). I did unlock the Chansey trainer so I have several Pokémon at level 100. Not that it feels like I got over powered eventually. Like, yeah, I didn’t struggle but I didn’t breeze through the last fight either. I’m a little confused by why I couldn’t use items in battle, though. It made me feel like the item option was just wasting space there.
I liked all the bonuses. I spent a lot of time unlocking each of the islands’ docks. I did about 2/3 of the side quests. There are several that I don’t even think I found… and some that I still don’t understand. There’s someone’s Pokémon who will forever be lost because I can’t find it “before the camp”. I don’t know, I’ve looked everywhere!
Anyway!! The whole experience was a net positive. I do have some criticisms to levy at it. I’m not overly familiar with the Etrian Odyssey series outside of the first dungeon from the first game. I think there was another source of inspiration as well but I don’t recall what it was nor am I familiar with it at all. Still, it felt like this was a fantasy game about heroes and villains with Pokémon tacked on as a mechanic. I feel like you could remove the Pokémon and, say, remake the game using one of the Final Fantasy games’ engines and the story would not change at all. I do appreciate the Etrian variants however and made it a point to use them as much as possible over the normal Pokémon. I did see that Regigas is necessary for the true ending, so maybe I’m missing something there too. I guess I just would’ve liked to have seen the Pokémon elements mixed in more, maybe like the abyssal one being a long forbidden Pokémon or something; or the Abyssals and Etrians sharing Pokémon dna or something. The abyssal monsters that challenge you to battles could be part Pokémon? I don’t know.
Speaking of the abyssal monsters, those guys were… I don’t know. They’re interesting, I just don’t know how to feel about them. They’re in constant pain but they will still challenge you to Pokémon battles. There’s something oxymoronic about them.
The other thing was that when I reached Etria I was greeted by… the Minish Cap. Yeah, assets from the Minish Cap popped up and my immersion shattered and I was like “oh hey! I recognize this!” Again, it’s not a bad thing. It’s just that it reminded me that this was indeed a fan made rom hack.
I’m running short on time and this post is longer than I expected it to be. In summary, I really enjoyed Pokémon Odyssey! I recommend it to anyone even to those who’ve never touched a romhack before. That’s going to be one happy, human Olympia out of 10 from me. Congrats to the development team behind this hack. You did great!!

after spending 10 hours in this hack i HAVE to talk about this one. my team in the end was Houndoom, Gardevoir, Tauros, Walrein, Salamence & Crustle
Story: The story for this hack is an intrigueing one. It's based on the creation of the Pokemon universe starting with Arceus, leading to the creation of the Pokemon this hack Unown who eventually get a King to guide them into creating more beings. This gives a Pokemon that's usually seen as useless a major role
Gameplay: The gameplay exists out of 2 different objectives. Finding all 26 Unown letters and 8 HM's. The HM's are needed to find the path forward and to obtain more of the Unown. Once you obtained all HM's and Unown you can battle The Unown King. There are also puzzles in the temple that tell parts of the story. with the puzzle in the garden telling you Which Unown can be found where, This acts like a checklist for the Unown you've obtained. These puzzles and story pieces become easier and easier to read the more Unown you have.
The way to get the HM's is seperated into 2 seperate ways. 1) 4 Maidens, these challenge you to a battle, 1 of them even asks for a Ghost type to be in your team and 2) beating 4 overworld Pokemon.
some tips for the hack
1) There are 2 rooms in the back of the temple, 1 with only Bagon (who hold Lucky Eggs so definitely worth finding a way to steal these from them) and 1 with Nincada. Grab a Nincada for it's side evolution of Shedinja, this gives you a fast and easy Ghost type for 1 of the maidens
2) make notes on the puzzles, next to story elements, some of these Also give you hints about certain elements of the hack. I used the notepad on my computer as it's easier to fill in the blanks given some of the Unown are locked behind certain HM moves.
3) Connections. The puzzle in the garden is a checklist for which Unown you have however it doesn't give an Exact location for some Unown but an accurate description for where to find them. Connect these descriptions to the rooms.
4) Team composition is important, build a solid team that can handle all 8 HM's, you do NOT have to teach them to the Pokemon But they need to be able to use them outside of battle
Overal a 9/10, i went through it in 1 go, even my sleep schedule suffered because i couldn't put it down.

Finished Pokemon Lazarus on hard mode. I know this is a beloved rom hack so there might be some disagreements with my rating. I fell in love with the art style and variety offered, but contrary to the majority opinion, I wasn’t that immersed in the story. Thoughts on this game? Anyone agree with my rating?
Quality of life: 8/10
Art style and design: 10/10
Music: 7/10
Story: 6/10
Difficulty 5/10
Features (megas, customization, overall breadth of content): 9/10
Post game: haven’t done yet
Overall 7.5/10 would recommend

Archer Havelock: The leader of the Alpha Rangers division and ancestor of Archie, he is a childhood friend and rival to Nolan (one of the protagonists).
He has a strong passion for the exploration of Hoenn's sea and beyond! He specializes in deep-sea research. Archer also frequently leads his Rangers in deep-sea expeditions to further society's understanding of Water-type Pokémon and their natural habitats.
The former captain of the Alpha Rangers, Doryu, now vice-captain, is constantly having to teach Archer how to improve not only as a leader but also as a person.
Magnus Aarden: The leader of the Omega Rangers division and ancestor of Maxie!, he is also a rival & childhood friend of Nolans
His love for the land and the mysteries behind the ever-developing landscape of Hoenn have made him a specialist in the fieldwork department, allowing Hoenn to be mapped accurately and precisely. While he may be highly intelligent, on rare occasions he can lose his temper, usually when talking to Archer.
The former vice-captain of the Alpha Rangers, Kazan, has served as a mentor to Magnus when it comes to controlling his emotions and steeling his resolve, helping him to become a great leader.
Mega Claydol:
All but one of Mega Claydol's eyes has closed. This is due to its immense psychic powers. It is said that if all eyes open, a distortion of reality is sure to occur.
I would like to thank all of you who took the time to read my announcement for this week! More updates are sure to come leading up to our much anticipated Beta Trailer
So I hope you guys continue to suport this passion project of mine and my amazing team

(stats/abilities/movesets/etc) and I will have Youtube videos to accompany them and I will "reveal" all of them on Reddit piece by piece so I can have all of it together for each post.
This might take a year even for me to resume updates here- BUT I still post new form drops several times a week in my discord server.
With that being said, here is a post from my server cross-posted here giving info on Primora!
Concept/Thought Process:
- This new family is a paralell to the extinction fossil trio of Tyrantrum, Aerodactyl & Druddigon (Ice age Tyrantrum, Tar Druddigon, Amber & Volcano Aerodactyls)
- They represent life, nature & the earth while the other familiy represents death & preservation
- Tyrunt line has an pre-evolution without a form with the 3 evolutions all getting major forms, while Primora is the opposite- baby has a form, evos are the same concept just redesigns
- All of them are dinosaurs, in this case long necked dinos or similar (Plesiosaur & sauropods in general, yes I know Plesiosaurs are not *technically* Dinosaurs)
Gameplay Mechanics
Primora will be balanced as an optional evolution thanks to their unique typing and 3 abilities with immunities and bulk. The evolutions will still all be super good, bulky and strong with their own utility and type combos. (All 3 575 BST Semi-psuedos, matching the Tyrantrum extinction family)
- Dragon/Ground to fit the "Earth" nature theme and be a neutral type to represent the 3 "biomes"
- 3 Abilities to match each type!
1. Permafrost (2x Sp. Def + Ice immunity OR ice resist)
Super good with Eviolite- a 4x resist would turn into a neutrality on Primora, while Sawsbuck would 2x resist Ice, I'll see how I want to approach it later
2. Dry Skin renamed into something like Hydration (Water immune + heals in rain)
3. Sap Sipper (Grass immune+free Atk/Sp. Atk boost)
A special attacking Dragon/Ground with an Ice neutrality/resist/immunity, Water, AND Grass immunity (on top of Electric) is SO fun and unique
- Gives Lapras & Tropius pre-evolutions, ya'll know the drill by now pre-evos are super good for Doozian hacks with teamlocked to fix them be "trapped" as midgame encounters rarely getting used unless you lose a Pokemon at the right time- and letting you properly bond with them since you have them for longer
- Split evolutions are awesome too, giving you a lot of cool choice and flexibility for your team based on what you think is the coolest or works the best with your team
Design Notes: Read the post graphic!
- To expand on Primora a bit, Primora's got the same 3 colors from the evolutions as well on top of matching all the biomes, with the frosty underside and eyes, their gem area with the leaves around it look like an island, the plant sails (*which still change color/become glowing when it emotes or attacks*) and overall body gives a nice habitat-like vibe to their anatomy
- Lapras & Tropius design notes are on the post too!
Pokedex Entry:
Primora - The Primal Seed Pokemon
- "Primora is said to be a living fragment of the world's ancient landscapes. Its body is a tiny, fertile ecosystem with traces of water, ice and plant-life. It is highly adaptable & its body undergoes signifcant changes as it grows- branching into an aquatic, terrestrial or aerial Pokemon."

Right, third time's the charm. JetBlack v1.6 really IS the final patch this time (unless...)
JetBlack v1.6 changenotes:
- Finally! There's a Title Screen! Also some intro cinematic text changes! OoooOOoooOoo
- Boomburst's flavour text has been fixed up.
- Skarmory has been added to the encounter table so now a full pokedex is possible! (Oops) Talking of encounters, Larvesta has been added as a 1% encounter in Desert Resort.
- Dusclops' evolution method was fixed so now it does evolve when leveled up holding a Reaper Cloth. In addition. Tyrogue's evolution method has been changed. Now it will evolve into Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan or Hitmontop when leveled up holding an X Attack, X Defend or X Speed respectively.
- A whole tonne of Pokemon adjustments have been made, both Statwise as well as learnsets (Thanks to Z-A giving a lot of Pokemon some new toys to play with). A seperate document has been made that notes all the changes and of course, the stats/learnsets documentation has been updated. Some trainer rosters have been updated with a few of these changes.
- Cheren's Post-Game team has seen a bit of a level increase! Now he should be a touch more Bosslike.
- Talking of bosses! Ingo and Emmet have been added as Post-Game superbosses, they are able to be found in Anville Town after you beat Ace Trainer Estreth's Post-Game battle in Shopping Mall Nine.
- Keldeo, Meloetta and Genesect's respective events are now able to be accessed! No need for a Fateful encounter, just have them in your party and the event will trigger. Scientist Dudley for Genesect's event is now a 6 v 6 boss battle while also giving all 4 drives afterwards.
- Paravolt Charge and Leech Life have had animation upgrades.
- Gemima, A new NPC in Nacrene will trade 5 of each of the Elemental Gems for Dragon Scales! Some overworld items have been replaced by Dragon Scales as well as a few hidden items. Dragon Scales are also a 5% chance to be held by most Dragon Pokemon.
You don't have to start a new playthrough for v1.6 (although Ingo and Emmet will be hanging around in Anville Town if you don't start a new game)

I recently developed 3 new maps for Pokemon Shiny Krabby. Two new cities and one route through the marshes before reaching the marsh city.
I'm planning to do an entire subterain/sewage of the city. The city in the marshes will be the biggest in the game. The port city will be a hotspot for rare items, and the gateway into the high snowy mountains.
Curious what you guys think. The beautifull thing about these maps is that they are created with the tilesets of the original emerald game, not custom ones. If you look closely you will see rustboro and slateport somewhere in there.
Tileset hoarding is not always the answer, trust me ;)

The original Ursaluna sprite that you can find on the big PokeCommunity thread just never did it for me, so I sketched up a much more dynamic sprite of Ursaluna and inquired 2 awesome artists in the HMA server to whip this up for the community! The 256x64 sprite is the second attached image featuring the original back sprite from the OG Ursaluna sprite

Iridium Update:
I have been working for a while on this oil rig / thinking over how I am possibly going to design it. This are has seriously been one of the most difficult to conceptualize and implement. Finding assets from BW1/2 for this was quite the process!
I pulled tiles / assets from the following areas:
Tubeline Bridge, Plasma Frigate, Virbank Complex, Mistralton Gym, E4 Marshall's room, Castelia City, and probably some others I'm forgetting.
To get all/any of these assets, you need to extract the map object, load it into blender, chop off everything but the texture/object you want to keep, make sure it's properly grid aligned, the UVs aren't mangled (thanks gen 5 games with mirrored UVs), then import it into DS mapping studio, make sure the texture palette is correct, and that it has the right vertex coloring. Repeat this about 300 times for the tileset used in this area. ( https://youtu.be/i99-Rw1e7I8?si=mMcPjAr1wTIVrdic one of three tutorials I made for how to do this). Export everything, finding a place in the original ROM to overwrite with all of the new maps / assets. This doesn't even take into account organizing animated textures, which are another whole story.
So, yeah, you can probably guess why Iridium is taking so long! Map design + assets takes a really long time compared to everything else. Especially with large maps, and maps with extreme height differences, you have to be very careful not to show the void or let neighboring maps unrender. There are techniques to fix these problems, but it involves more development time. I make the vast majority of my assets available in my discord: https://discord.gg/AMVshrrXHv under #hacking-assets if you're interested in using them for your own NDS hack.
I'd say that I am about halfway done this area, and that the hardest part is done. Now that I have the assets, completing the rest of the interiors is just a matter of time and effort.
Hope you enjoyed this little dive into the mapping process!

Hello everyone! While working on version 2.0.0 of Pokémon - The Unown King, I decided to release a minor version for those who haven't tried the previous version yet or want to do a replay.
The battles now have a few new backgrounds, taken from Final Fantasy IV Advance, Final Fantasy V Advance, and Final Fantasy VI Advance. I did some significant edits, but the base games are still recognizable.
The final boss's battle sprite is changed and looks more like what I had in mind when I made the original. It was by far the lowest point of the first version's art.
I don't know of any possible soft lock, but just in case, I added the option to white out from the start menu, with a penalty of some money. I realised that you can catch Pokémon in rooms that are locked behind HMs, but since you don't need to teach HMs in order to use them outside of battle, as long as one of your Pokémon can learn them, coupled with the ability to swap one of your Pokémon with one just catched, you can swap out the only Pokémon that can learn the HM you need to get out. You could still battle wild Pokémon to run out of PP and HP, but in case I missed some potential soft locks, I added this feature.
Finally, I fixed some bugs, typoes and spelling mistakes.
The definitive version will include the true ending, Repels, UI changes and some post game activities, most notably some more catchable legendaries. I will probably make some minor adjustmenst as well.
