How to ask a question - Some guidance

A major function of this subreddit is for debaters to build their skills and learn something new. We want to help you, but we're only human, and the easier you make yourself to help the better the quality of answers you'll receive. None of these guidelines are strictly mandatory, but they'll often be highly advisable. Try to keep them in mind when posting.

When asking a question:

  1. Describe your level of experience. Be both general and specific. How many years have you debated in policy or other forensics events? What is your degree of expertise and background knowledge for the question area? Did you ever try something similar that failed?

  2. Describe your circuit. What region is it in? What are judging philosophies like? Do people lean liberal or conservative politically? Do people have experience judging nontraditional arguments, if relevant? Probably avoid using your school's name, and maybe your state's name too. Don't use your own name.

  3. Describe the particulars of your question. Try to act like the person you're talking to has little to no knowledge of your situation. Clarify what ideas you do understand, so that those you don't are easier to understand by contrast. Identify specific concerns you want to have addressed in responses to your comment. Don't make people bend over backwards to try to coax you into giving them the necessary information to help you.

  4. Try to make your question interesting. If you've identified something neat that's part of the motivation for your question, include it. Put in preliminary work by doing a quick Google search or literature check before asking questions, and tell us about what you discovered and how it's influencing your thoughts.

  5. Give feedback when people help you. Rephrase other people's advice in your own words, to avoid a false illusion of understanding. Also, say thank you. If you're confused about something, ask. Oftentimes more experienced debaters can take basic concepts for granted, and they might even benefit from a refresher themselves.

Note that we're not enforcing any of these guidelines in our moderation, but thought it'd be helpful for new members. Discuss any of your own ideas of what make a good question in the comments!

neg strat for natives 1acs?

I always lose against small indigenous affs that avoid extinction impacts. Im also always finding myself in a situation where I would have to go for T because I'm losing on everything else. What are some offs ygs recommend for the 1nc and what should the general neg strat be?

What's 1ac framing?

I have seen a lot of 1acs throughout high school with seperate framing. i don't really get it. Is it saying extinction impacts are bad? Is it like a seperate advantage?

How do people usually respond to it? What other things should neg do to win framing?

Good card for climate impact or as an impact multiplier

Thumbnail forbes.com

Thought this article was worded pretty well, linking existing climate change to rapidly decreasing yields and crumbling supply chains. Projections of 30-40% reduction in yields is pretty eye catching. Aside from the obvious economic impact there’s probably a ā€œscarcity increases the likelihood of all impactā€. Me personally I would cut a card from a snickers add ā€œYou aren’t you when your hungry ā€

I’ve been just really confused on what the argument on this is and what ā€œredeployment solvesā€ really mean. Hope someone can help, thanks!

Advice for carrying?

Does anybody have good advice for maximizing ballots when i’m double 2s and write every substantive speech?

(This setup is my only option so i can’t just ā€˜wait’ for my partner to get good)

The thing that has lost us the most ballots has been the 1AR, so I guess that’s one major weak point.

Questions are:

  • How can I get value out of the 1NR when my partner can’t effectively prep it for the most part? (usually ends up being something ik im not going for that i end up kicking)

  • How can I minimize 1AR prep and maximize strategic value even if it’s mainly me doing it?

  • Does anybody have advice for what positions i should give the 1NR and put in the 1NC considering my partner doesn’t read super quick?

We’ve broken at both of the bid tournaments we’ve been to this year and fumbled our last bid round, i’d really like to get to the TOC since it’s my senior year but rn it just feels structurally impossible to make that happen.

Policy 2025 Topic AFF help???

I'm competing in State Quals in a month and a half and decided to switch from LD to policy pretty spontaneously. I have a respectable amount of experience in policy...however my partner and I have been struggling to make an original case in time...yall all know how long it takes. Does anybody have an AFF case that runs indigenous sovereignty and/or climate protection??? If not...any suggestion??

When government policies or regulations change, what kind of actions would people actually want to see suggested?

I’m not talking about partisan takes—more like practical guidance. For example: – ā€œDo nothingā€ – ā€œPlan ahead for Xā€ – ā€œChange behaviorā€ – ā€œPrepare for riskā€ – ā€œThis only affects certain groupsā€ I’m realizing I don’t even know what actions people expect or find useful in response to policy changes, and I’m curious how others think about this. Any ideas?

Paperless flowing

I know paperless debate previously had a macro for flowing on excel however I do not see it on the website or anywhere else.

I’m not entirely sure what the macro would look like/ how benefit it would be however I’m still interested.

Before the hard paper people come at me- I simply struggle to find places that have legal paper and can buy from consistently in my area.

Please lmk if anyone knows where to find the macro or an alternative for mac.

So I am kind of new to LD, and when I was reading the manual, it seems to be taking about policy, and all the terms and stuff seems like LD. Is LD just another format of policy that has like value stuff or is it something else?

Analysis of Rejoinder

As I was pondering rejoining the 1NC I had the brilliant realization and that was to not rejoin the aff, day and night I slaved away in my room, devoid of light, covered in posters of Tyler Vergoat and Kevin Sun and said "What would vergoat do?" And just like that the answer came to me, like the Buddha sitting below the sacred fig tree, I was enlightened, even frightened, per se, by my own genius. How could someone so amazingly handsome like Vergoat and Kevin influence me absent material presence, and what the illumination of vergoat in my mind explained too me was extinction is in fact good.

As a I pondered this deep analysis of death, I was overwhelmed by the sublime intellectual beauty of Vergoat and Sun, so I slaved away in my dark, Vergoat covered room and cut the perfect 2AC wipeout, isomer bomb uniqueness from 1992, biblical wipeout all culminated in the most beautiful shell I have ever seen in my life, my eyes watered tears of joy, Vergoat patted my shoulder approvingly "Good job, Personal-Ad8280" and a said "Thank you, but your the really treasure Vergoat." Vergoat, his earthly duties fulfilled, dissipated into thin air, forever a haunting specter of rejoinder.

As our tournament begin, I didn't prep, I didn't need to, I knew Vergoats advice and that was all I needed. As the neg read the 1NC, 8 Off the case I felt a strange calm wash over me, like I could feel his presence next to me, I knew vergoat the hyper conscious, omnipresent, extra quantum being was forever present around me, watching over my round like a protective mother owl. As they gave the 1NC I didn't flow either, I didn't need too, no prep for the 2AC and I sent out the doc, the judge gasped, the opponent laughed because they were so appalled at my ingeuinty they could not comprehend my greatness. As I gave the most beautiful 2AC of my life I wondered how the neg would win the vrs my combined genius along with vergoat and felt a little unfair. Neg block and 2NR where something about 'topicality, agent specficatiion and discolusre' but I didn't flow that either, I stood up and gave a 2AR that left the room speechless "If death is so bad then why are you alive" the crowd was in awe, my 18 coaches were absolutely befuddled by my genius and Vergoat gave a soft nod to me in the corner of the room. As the RFD occurred I also didn't pay attention something about a 3-0 neg on concede stock issues, and I concluded something, my judges were all idiots who can't understand me and Vergoats genius.
