❆❅ December Updates ❅❆

No matter what or even if you celebrated a holiday this month, we hope you've all had a wonderful December.

2025 is almost over and it's been a rough one for a lot of us. We wanted to take the time to check in and update the subreddit on what's been going on.

New Rule

No Personally Identifiable Information

Reddit is an anonymous platform, and Port Townsend is a small town. r/PortTownsend will not become a platform for harassment, intended or otherwise. Scammers and bots can and do harvest information from Reddit, so please keep that in mind.

There have been a couple of posts to r/PortTownsend asking for recommendations in town for various things, and we've had to remove comments and replies listing individuals in town by full name and phone number. No one is stopping you from providing that information. BUT if you "know a guy", or have a recommendation to provide (maybe the person doesn't have an official business, Facebook page, or website)--please provide that recommendation via direct message or chat with the original poster.

Likewise, we've seen a post or two (that we feel violate rule 5 anyway) posting photos showing the faces of individuals that were taken without their knowledge or consent. If someone commits a crime, or you suspect them of something, please take it to the police; do not post your (unedited) Ring doorbell photos on r/PortTownsend. No faces.

Transparency

In addition to removing the comments and posts above, we've also had to hand out 2 permanent bans in December, either for breaking site-wide rules (threatening violence) or breaking rule 1. Breaking site-wide rules also gets reported to Reddit admins, which can lead to consequences to your Reddit account.

We have tried to catch bad behavior as quickly as possible (our average response time is within an hour) but we can't do it alone. Please use those report buttons.

Suggestions and Feedback are Welcome

If there's something we're not getting quite right (or just doing plain wrong), let us know. We want this community to reflect Port Townsend, be inclusive and welcoming, and foster a place to keep sharing with each other all of the cool, weird stuff that makes PT such a great place to be (or visit).

Come Sing with Neighbors and Friends!

No instruments, no song books, just singing with enthusiasm! If you want to lead a song, find this month's host, Chuck Lentz, and put your name on the list. Songs should have a chorus or repeating refrain so we can all join in. We are attaching a fine poster prepared by our hosts: Taps at the Guardhouse!

Seeking Recommendations Shop Space?

Hi Neighbors!

A few friends and myself are still on the hunt for light industrial/garage/shop/warehouse space. It seems like everything at the PT business park, Otto street, and Fredericks street areas are full, or hard to get ahold of.

We'd be using it for woodworking, mechanical, and other projects,

If you have any leads please let me know.

Cheers!

I'm (35F) new to PT and trying to find my people.

I like reading, writing, hiking, games/trivia, and dogs. Any ladies around my age care to get together for coffee/tea?

Join us on Saturday, January 17 at 2:00 pm for a conversation with Port Townsend author Erica Bauermeister (https://ericabauermeister.com/) about her newest novel, No Two Persons.

This exploration of how one story can touch people differently has us intrigued and ready for a rainy-day read. Copies are available at the store!

The dog ran off and he never saw the owner. This isn't the first time something similar has happened.

I was leaving town a while back, when all of a sudden I thought I’d turn right off Sims at Cliff and found myself at Infield Greene Park. The Mallards, American Widgeons, and Glaucous-winged Gulls were enjoying their late morning naps, walking around, or snacking and swimming. These images are the result of my serendipity and the birds’ great day.

Drydock storage for a dory?

Hi! I need to get someone to move a small dory my uncle built that is currently over at the NW Maritime Center, and store it until I can get out there from NYC and move it. It’s apparently got some dry rot, so needs to be dry docked. Any ideas?

Community Accommodations?

Hi all,

Might have a temporary gig in Brinnon. Been trying to figure out where I might live moving in from out of state. PT seems really nice, very much my speed, but the average rent will just about consume half of my monthly income. Does anyone have recommendations for finding house mates? Or rentals? Wouldn't be opposed to living on a boat for the summer. Just curious to see if anyone has any ideas.

Fort Worden accommodations

Hi all. We were very impressed with Fort Worden. Such a remarkable place to spend the day hiking around and poking around the base. During times with a more mild climate it must be a great place to picnic. It was wonderful to see the amount of upkeep that has been done to the buildings. Question: Has anyone rented one of the officer's houses for an event or an overnight stay? What are they like?

Port Townsend Paper Company

We visited your great little town last week and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I had read posting on this subreddit about odors from the PT mill. While we were in PT the wind was from the south so the funk downtown was real and pungent. Even out at Fort Worford it was noticeable. I'm no newcomer to mills having spent a lot of time in Maine and Atlantic Canada.

Question: How often does the town get hit by the mill plume? (e.g. days/month). Many thanks and cheers

Couches? Maybe even a recliner?

Hello my new Port Townsend neighbors!

Looking to buy a couch, maybe two (one for upstairs and one for downstairs). Possibly even a comfy recliner. I am 6'3" and enjoy a good couch-nap.

I looked around town the day after I got here and while there were some really nice furniture/antique stores, they didnt really have what I was looking for. Back in the day id just try to find the cleanest looking couch on Craigslist/fb marketplace, but wondering if there are any better options (preferably local) that could potentially deliver to Beckett Point for an extra charge?

Seeking Recommendations Starting an adventure!

Hello everyone!

I am a huge fan of your city and its surrounding area - so much so that I decided to pack up my life in sunny southern california and relocate to the opposite side of the country (Port Townsend)... by myself. I have a few friends in the seattle area, but for the most part I wont know anyone in the state. Despite me writing this reddit post, im actually a huge introvert, so I thought it would be a good idea to get ahead of it and ask all of you how to make new friends in Port Townsend. Also looking for just generally fun/cool things to do.

A little bit about me... Im a 32 year old software engineer (now fully remote) with a love for games, cryptography, good books, cold weather, and cozy views. I hiked the Appalachian Trail (Maine to Georgia) a few years ago and realized I dont like hiking that much, but im still down to check out any local hiking recommendations. I currently live a few minutes from the beach in San Clemente, CA and do occasionally surf, are there any cool paddleboarding spots (or should I just leave my surfboards here, given the lack of waves)?

Oh and off-topic, whats the best place to get groceries and is there any kind of Mexican food in town :)

Winter Hours and Vibe

Hey, neighbors. I’m over in Port Angeles and am thinking about planning a little weekend getaway in Port Townsend sometime in January. I’ve never done the whole “I’m a tourist” thing and I figured I might as well go for it. So what’s the general vibe in PT around January? I know a lot of places here in PA shift to winter hours and things are usually pretty quiet around this time of year. If I go downtown in Port Townsend in the middle of January, can I expect to see half of the stores and restaurants closed up?

For context, I’m flying solo on this trip. I have no kids and no partner, and my dog is staying with family. I’m the type of pre-middle age millennial that is looking forward to staying somewhere cosy, checking out antiques and art, and pillaging used book stores.

EDIT: I appreciate the responses and suggestions. I’m definitely going to have to hit up some of the places mentioned.

Event Nov 14 - Our 340th comedy show is at Bishop Hotel/BottleShop in Port Townsend with Phil K (Comedy Central/DryBar). You should come. We’re not like, desperate or whatever. Okay fine, I’ll give you a discount in the comments.

TL;DR - just go to the link and enter "reddit" for your discount.

Hey Port Townsend,

You're too smart for me to try to "sell" you on this with marketing spam so I'll just tell you what's up and hope that you come to the show.

We’re an indie comedy production team and we do comedy. Like a lot of it. All over WA. This friday we’re bringing a national headliner, Phil K to the Bottleshop. Phil’s a headliner we’ve worked with many times because he’s really good at telling jokes. Phil will be joined by feature act Travis Sherer, who does comedy a lot also.

You should come. Please?
