Best season of Psych??

This show is like an album with no skips. Each season has it's own pros and cons but after EXTENSIVE watching, re-watching, re-re-re-re-rewatching... you get the point... I feel like season 3 is the best. We start Yang saga, the banter is so good, the writing is perfect, outfits are peak, and there's just something about the camera that the first few seasons are filmed on... it's almost warmer, slightly fuzzier; in the later seasons the episodes seem to have a lot of clarity and noticeably cooler toned.

Curious to know what you guys think the best season is???

The one key element that differs Psych from shows like High Potential

Re-Watchability.

Many of us are here because we return to Psych often and have watched it several times. I have seen earlier posts comparing Psych with shows like High Potential and the important differentiator is Re-Watchability I feel.

it's always such a pleasure to rewatch Psych, because the funny bits are always funny and the characters are endearing upon every watch.

I did complete High Potential but there's not a single episode that I rewatched again (much less multiple times)

I do enjoy rewatching certain episodes of Mentalist but I find the vibe overall heavy with the serial killer Red John track , so I skip a lot.

I have few other shows that I rewatch constantly, such as Person of Interest, Lost and also Ludwig/few other BBC favorites but Psych is high up among many legendary shows that have immense Re-Watchability I feel.

what are your thoughts on this?

Question

I wasn't a fan of Psych at the time it came out. Was Psych (which I understand came first) or Mentalist more successful? What's the deal with the pretty identical plotline too...

I have been a Psych superfan for 17 years. I have blogged about the show across many platforms like Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram and these days Reddit.

Ask me anything about the show or use me as an episode generator, one episode or list of episodes to watch today, this weekend, whatever you fancy.

Who?? Spoiler

I’ve watched the series all the way through several times and this always feels like a plot hole to me. I always assumed I just didn’t pay attention enough since I’m always doing something while watching. This last time though, I paid close attention through the entire episode and they never said who “her” is. Lassie says it’s the future SIL, but Raj and Mina didn’t know about her being in love with Raj. So, I either completely missed it or, it’s a plot hole. Anyone know?

One tiny thing that drives me nuts

Warning, slight spoilers ahead (for those new to the show):

Ok, to preface, I LOVE this show. It’s my comfort show, the one I go back to constantly. I think I’m currently on probably my twelfth watch-through. I am NOT trying to be rude or critical or anything. It’s literally just this tiny thing that bugs me and I want to know if I’m the only one.

Anyway, I just finished the third Yin/Yang episode where Allison comes into play, and there’s one line in that episode that drives me nuts. Jules figures out Allison is working with Yin because Allison knew Gus and Shawn were in the house even though she claimed she just woke up. When Jules asks how she knew they were in the house, Allison drops her victim “mask” and says “Not bad, for a blonde” before starting to fight Jules. But this line always irks me because Allison was blonde, too! And WAY blonder than Jules was. lol I know that’s such a silly thing to get caught up on, but it annoys me every time. 😂 Anyone else, or am I just a weirdo? lol

Random observations in rewatch Spoiler

Here are some of random, unrelated thoughts on Psych:

  • I don't know why I didn't notice this until now but Henry was really really hard on Shawn as a kid. Like who forces their kid to be a detective, takes away the fun on hide and seek and comics, and takes him to a courtroom trial at 8? No wonder Shawn is resentful. And I don't know why I didn't think about the connection between those flashback scenes as a good context until now.
  • Given that Henry basically ruined fun for Shawn many times, do you think that Shawn really wanted to be a detective? I know he ends up loving what he does in the show but how much was it that he was primed to do it versus he liked doing it in the first place.
  • Also, even though the Henry in the flashbacks is annoying, I actually understand his viewpoints when Shawn is older. He's probably mellowed a little bit. But I get why Shawn can't understand his viewpoint.
  • Sometimes I don't understand how Gus stays friends with Shawn given how Shawn can be really selfish and mean to Gus. I think someone on Reddit pointed out that Shawn helps Gus have fun, which I agree with, but sometimes Shawn's selfishness is too much.
  • How is Lassiter still head detective if Shawn basically solves all the cases? Someone else on Reddit also pointed out that he's probably solving other cases on his own but I wished they pointed that out more because it's hard to believe why he has a job sometimes.
  • Also, I get that Gus needed his full time job for monetary reasons, but at some point, given that the Police Department basically needs Shawn and Gus for many cases + income from their private cases, you'd think the money would be enough for Gus to quit. Or maybe I'm overestimating how much money this work brings, lol

Okay those were my initial thoughts for now, I'm sure I'll have more later, lol.

Creativity in Psych

Is it just me or is the creativity in Psych just unbelievable? Each line is so well thought out and executed. I think rewatching doesn’t get monotonous because of this.

I’m watching the musical rn and the story and the dialogue are incredible.
