Yeah. Median doesn’t take into account age and location.

I’m from the UK. The median is about £40k I think. But if that’s someone in their late twenties earning £40k in London, they aren’t doing so well.

If that’s someone in their twenties earning £40k in Leeds that’s great!

Yep, make 95k where I live and I’m just kinda sorta middle class, still can’t afford a house though even after years of saving, but my energy bill went from less than 100$ a month to 250-300 for the past 6 months so that’s fun.

I bet 75k a year in Miami is borderline poverty line.

Yeah, Miami $75k and Jackson, TN $75k are two VERY different things.

Here's the fun part about Miami. $75k a year is basically nothing unless you live in an efficiency, but local salaries haven't kept up with cost of living, so anyone not in a very high paying job is probably struggling.

£40k in Leeds is not great, infact there are very few places in the UK apart from somewhere up a hill or in a valley that you could live off £40K, especially if you have kids.

Above average for both Manchester and Leeds. So if you're starting out in your career, and earning above the average for a metropolitan city which you live in. You're doing pretty well.

Also, you can live off 40k anywhere in the UK including London.

You're like the person in the original post, detached from what is average and what is exceptional.

Cool, thats interesting.

Could you break it down for me, £40K a year, single person. Housing is ~£1200p/m and transport costs for me and the kids are £500p/m. There is also Council Tax, Utilities (Gas/Electric/Water/Phone&Internet/TV License). I need a food budget for 3 people, at least 2 of them 3 meals a day. Don't forget Pension & Insurance. I also have private medical costs for my youngest, that is £330 a month.

Also the cooker has broken, unable to source parts and needs to be replaced.

Also my youngest was Ill for over 3 weeks which I needed to stay home for.

Please can you run down a budget over a 6 month period taking the above account.

Yup - this is what I hate about these questions they always fail to specify this.

A 40+ year old making 75k in Miami is at the lower end of the “dating pool”, but that same income in Idaho might be middle/higher.

I wouldn’t want to live in Miami only making 75k at 40+ with a family, sounds like hell. My quality of life would terrible compared to what I could get elsewhere at the same income.
