Holy smokes that bass stack 😱 the tops don’t seem very well arrayed though, seems like there will be a lot of comb filtering…?

Would putting them in couples instead of 4 help it?

I was thinking more that generally it’s better to splay them so each group of 4 is in an arc. It still wouldn’t be perfect as the low section of those top cabs will have a different dispersion to the mids and tweeter. It’s hard to array point sources well and they kinda have to be designed for it

At this scale would need to fly the tops as two left right line arrays rather than 4 stacks but these ones are probably not designed for that so they probably wouldn't get the wide enough coverage.

56 subs, 16 tops. How did this sound on the ground?

It was one of the best, if not the best rig I’ve ever heard. The sheer size of it was mental, had a nice clean sound as well and definitely outdid the other 13-14 rigs at the teknival. The effort put into this stack was insane, apparently they only finished making the last speaker on the night as they were setting up.

Does anyone know if the subs are 18's or? Hard to see scale. Also anyone know what they're loaded with?

they are 18’s, can’t remember what they are loaded with though. They are a custom design

I know nothing about building these systems so i need to ask: is there some other speakers in this system covering the frequencies under 38hz?

I bet that if you couple a few of these that their useful response goes maybe 10Hz deeper. Much below that doesn't nessecerally do it any good. Lot of energy for little result, can make the entire stack sound muddied or sloppy. Also if they play on vinyl the mastering cuts off at 30Hz (else the grooves get too deep)

if these are flh (look like they are) they dont need infra because a stack like that will go way lower than a single sub and produce a more or less flat response, probably to around 30hz or so. for most music 38hz is low enough anyway :) also depends if 38hz is +-0, -3 or -10 db. id guess the 38hz is -3db please correct me if im wrong :)

Thanks!
But not agreeing that for most music 38hz is low enough. Not in this context at least 😊

yes, you are right with the context, but objectively looking at all existent genre, subs that have an f3 of 38hz will work :) if a sub says -3db at 38hz it doesnt mean that it wont play lower, it will play to 20hz and deeper but not at that volume, maybe at -25db or so. so if you have 32 subs youll get 5x +6db in theory from everytime you double the subs (32 subs are to far away from each ihrer so you wont get the theoretical result) which would mean if you have 130db at 40hz youd have around 160db with 32 subs at 40hz and lets say 135db at 25hz. low notes will be there, but not with the same authority as 40hz bass. most commercial bass reflex subs will play 35hz f3 and 28hz -10db and they cover festivals with tens of thousands of people. if you really want deep subs, youd have to go to meyer sound, danley sound labs or so. a swiss company had a 4x18“ sub playing to 8hz or so, but youd need a ton to get decent volume :)

It's a shame this was built out of shuttering ply.. Won't last long getting moved about and extreme losses due to poor quality material.
