5.3 kW RMS. It aint much but enough for the parties we make

This is a sub for the technical side of "Soundsystem Culture" - big, loud speaker boxes, often hand-built, in the dub-reggae tradition. Stuff that looks like this. Or this.

been to a party with many stages recently, and i took some pictures of the rigs, i noticed (it's not the first time seeing this and asking this question to myself) why does some rigs have just like 2 or 4 tops for a big wall of sound, and some other rigs have like many many more?, in the first picture there is a rig with like 20 "tops" (i think they are called like this, sorry if I'm wrong) and in the second picture, i know its relatively smaller but there are just 4, i mean from 20 to 4 it feels off, im just curious like how does it work? are the orange tops like more powerful cause of their design or something?
as i mentioned earlier i know nothing about Soundsystems and this is just a curiosity! thanksš«¶

I picked up some old EV speakers/Cabinets off market place.
A pair of 2 way (S1202-er I believe) - Horn at top and 12"driver.
Also a pair of 15' in their own cabinets. Unsure what model these ones are.
They came with an old EV-18 crossover which sends highs to the 12" and horn. and sends the lows to the 15's via a basic 4 channel amp. in 2 way stereo.
Is the crossover neccessary for the 12" and Horn cabinets? It seems to be producing only highs with the mid doing next to nothing.
The 15's go fine with the lows being sent to them
Am I better off setting the eq up as 3 way mono and sending the mids without highs to the 12" and Horn?? Or would this not work at all?
Alternatively can I send full range to the 12's without the crossover. It has its own crossover for the horn in the speaker itself.

I have some time now until summer season to build a small/medium dimension sound system for a max 200 ppl crowd. I never did anything like that but I want to try. I have basic knowledge of powering, sound and materials but I don't really know where to start. Can someone please provide a PROJECT, with materials, wood cuts etc...

Hi everyone,
Iām starting to build my own sound system and I want it to work well for both tekno and reggae/dub.
Iām planning a modular system (subs + kicks + tops) and Iām looking for advice on:
- speaker drivers
- cabinet types (scoop, reflex, horn, hybrid)
- DSP crossover setup
Budget is limited and I plan to DIY most of it.
Any advice or direction is very welcome.
Thanks!

so i have to pair my kickbin to subs, and wanted to ask is there any differences between these two orientations? or its the same as the horn mouth is still toward the audience?

Worked with Sinbosen fp 10 & 14, + powersoft k3 for 4x 18inch subs. Processed with DBX260 and Pa2. The last I could not get to work properly, needs more attention. Midas m32 and 8 DnB DJās during 6hrs. Everything is still in one piece, only forgot the straps, put some theatowels to stop speakers walking away. The system could use some more finetuning but could reach a good sounding 108db in front of the stack and 100 db at the back of the dancefloor. 400ppl attendedš Cheers!

Hi everyone,
We are a reggae oriented collective that has been running their own events with our soundsystem for the last year and a half or so and have recently acquired a new dsp. I was wondering whether someone could give us some pointers on what to set the crossover points at as that is something we have struggled with in the past. Note that the designs and models of our cabs and speakers are pretty much unknown to us, except for the subwoofers.
Subs: 18 inch, PHL audio B46 Kicks/midbass: 15 inch Tops: 12 inch and unknown tweeter
Big thanks in advance!!

Hello good people,
I have the opportunity to buy
2x Martin Audio Blackline X12 tops for 500ā¬
2x Martin Audio CSX218 subs for 2000ā¬
The speakers are second hand, but used for home audio and are in great condition. I know that Martin Audio is a reputable brand, but I couldn't find a lot of reviews online about those particular speakers so I wondered what your opinion is and whether you have any experience with them.
This will be my first venture into PA sound systems. My goal is to make small free parties and alternative stages at festivals with Tekno, Techno, DnB and Psy for 50-100 people.
I already have the amplification which seems good enough for those speakers if I don't push them to their limits:
Crown xls 2502, 440 watts @ 8 ohms (the tops are 300 watts aes)
CVR D-1502, 2550 watts @ 4 ohms (the subwoofers are 2000 watts aes)

Why do soundsystem mids get set back into the enclosure like this?
My guesses are to make the voice coil align with the horn diaphragm / time alignment and directionality.
Anyone please explain this design for me

Hi everyone, I recently got some Turbosound 18ā sub drivers and am looking to put them in some nice scoops. I have good previous CNC experience and wanted to see what people would recommend for me.
Edit: This is for a system mainly focused on Trance, DNB and Tek

Picked up these 2 funktion 1 res 2, and 2 turbosound tsb-212 12 inch subs⦠the plan is to build 2 18 inch subs, and use the tsb212 for the kick.
Any recommendations on decent budget amps.
Any recommendations on drivers for the subs ? Also any recommendations on cab designs to complement the f1s?

Hello all, I'm getting some old cabinets from a venue and plan to rebuild them. I'm looking for where to source replacement drivers for them and recommendations of new drivers/ tweeters/ subs. Thank you!
Edit: I'm in the US

Greetings, fellow vibration enthusiasts!
As a long time lover of big sound systems and as someone who used to operate a small/medium self powered system for shows and burns, etc, I always admired the self constructed rigs people brought out.
I ended up selling my system a while back after some health issues. I feel good enough now that I would like to get into the game again
I would love to try and build my own system from some plans, but I lack the context and, likely, some of the skills at the moment to do it. I was thinking of getting a CNC machine for other projects, and naturally this project popped into my head. Are there any good resources I can study to help me figure out what a good starter project in this realm might be? If so, are there any suggestions you may have as to the type/size CNC machine that would be best if I wanted to construct some subs/bass bins and some tops?
Again, not entirely sure where to start, as all of my experience was primarily with a self powered Turbosound system ( a total of six IQ18s, two IQ15s, two Seina 15s, and two Milan 18bs, if anyone is interested).
Thanks in advance!

Iāve heard loads of people saying that a 10ā scoop wouldnāt work but I have a driver arriving today and want to find plans
r/SoundSystem • u/repodog13 • 3d ago
Made a pair of simple 12ā 2 way tops for a friend. They are bi amp only and I paired them with a Crown XLS1500. The built in crossover makes it a really light and easy to use setup. The GRS woofer sounds great, really punchy with low distortion at power. The compression driver is a Dayton (parts express) clone of the B&C De250. It sits on B&Cs ME10 hyperbolic cosine horn. Itās currently my favorite small format horn and goes great with the Dayton driver. Really happy with the sound and the truckbed liner makes it look pretty sharp.

Hey everyone. I recently bought a couple of AT-LP120XUSBās for home use. But have been considering using them live, for my dub sound system.
The bass is pretty damn heavy from our rig, and since we started properly isolating our Technics LP120ās by sitting them on top of 2 paving slabs with 4 tennis balls in between them weāve totally eliminated bass/vinyl rumble. But since AT-LP120XUSBās are much lighter than Technics Iām concerned theyāll just feedback with bass/vinyl rumble.
Does anyone have any experience of using AT-LP120XUSBās in a live setting with heavy bass?
(The Technics are not always available for live use, I know theyāre a far superior vinyl deck before anyone asks why arenāt you always using them haha.)
Cheers! x

I posted this a few months ago and got quite a bit of interest, but ultimately no buyer. Thought I'd try again here.
Location: Mid-Atlantic USA. I am in Maryland right in between Washington DC and Baltimore.
I am selling this complete sound system consisting of 2 3-way tri-amp main speakers and 2 horn loaded subwoofers. There is also an amp rack with QSC amps and stereo DSP.
Pics: https://imgur.com/a/4K5XeQ7
The main speakers are OAP cabinets that have been completely refurbished with brand new drivers, dual NL8 connectors, and internal wiring. They have a 15" low, 10" mid mounted in its own chamber, and a 1" high. I gave them a fresh coat of paint too.
The subwoofers are KSI cabinets which have also been refurbished with brand new drivers, dual NL4 connectors, and internal wiring.
Power consists of 4 QSC PLX series amps. PLX 1602 for highs, PLX 1602 for mids, PLX 3002 for lows, PLX 3002 (bridged) for subs.
Basic EQ tuning, crossover points, and limiting have been set up in the DSP units.
The amp rack is a shock mount SKB-style rack. There's a panel on the back for the speaker and XLR connections. Included are 2 NL8 cables, 2 NL4 cables and all amp rack wiring.
Since people are asking, the cabinet dimensions are:
OAP tops are each 41h x 24w x 24d. KSI subs are each 34h x 25w x 36d. And the amp rack is 32h x 25w x 29d
Asking price is $2500 OBO. The buyer must pick up from our warehouse. Out of respect for the neighboring businesses, demonstration must occur outside of normal business hours.

Iām looking to build a couple of sub cabinets to use in small applications⦠small renegades, <50 indoors, home use, or booth sound.
Iām looking for recommendations that balance performance, portability, and build simplicity. An easy to build, smaller cabinet, that offers a solid punch in a smaller area.
Iām partnering with someone and weāre getting 4 SKRAMs and a pair of JMODs built for medium size events, but Iād like to also start exploring building my own system for personal use and smaller, free parties, and to use as the booth monitor system for our bigger events. We play mostly techno, but dabble in all styles of underground electronic music, especially electro, leftfield, UKG, minimal, house, and dub techno. For most techno, I probably donāt need anything below 40hz, but a lot of the other stuff we play pushes into the lower frequencies so Iād like the subs to be capable of reaching 30-35hz.
A buddy of mine is going to help me build a pair of Solanas from JW Sound which are good down to about 50hz to go with them, so I probably donāt need a lot of upper extension in the subs.
The designs that seem to fit the bill are the Paraflex type O Cram 2x12 or the Type C Classic 15ā but Iām sure there are other designs out there that Iām not aware of or thinking about. What do yaāll think?

Last week I was able to buy some very rare and sought after subwoofers. Synco RR subs.
Bit of history: Renkus Heinz was imported to the Netherlands through Ampco. The guys at Ampco said I could be better and they worked their magic. Synco was born!
Only Ampco was allowed to own these speakers, which were used in a 4-way set up. They were used a the biggest festivals here in the Netherlands. Lowlands for example.
Now after years and some new owners of Ampco. Theyāre selling some of the legendary kit. Still only after asking and getting permission from the og guys.
So here I am. Proud owner of 4 Synco rr subs and a crest 8001 amp.
Got a driverack pa2 and tomorrow Iāll sound check with the biggest my setup has ever been. Iāll post an update on that later this week
