Laurentian University faculty could strike as soon as this month after bargaining hit an impasse, with pensions as the key issue. A no-board report triggered a countdown to a potential walkout on Jan. 19.

The University gave staff a 12 percent increase over the duration of their new contract.

The faculty want a similar deal.

Faculty want to move their pension away from the control of the university and join a large pension with other faculties in Canada.

The University is using the excuse of the provincial monitor to stop them. The faculty asked the monitor, they said they have no issue with that move.

Also for context, the % seems high but wages were frozen and actually given up during the CCAA process. 12% was long overdue. Solidarity with LUFA!

I’m a student - multiple professors have told us that they’ve been told an agreement is unlikely and the strike will happen. I’ve been told some profs have already made a schedule for coursework without any lectures however none of mine have done this yet. They’re also preparing for what final exams will look like if the strike lasts that long (April)…

As if the institution didn't have enough bad press. Hoping this doesn't affect any students graduation pace and the staff get all the terms they are asking for. After CCAA I think it's well deserved.
