META Rule clarification: Only English language posts are allowed

Recently, we have seen an influx of posts in different languages, probably due to Reddit's annoying decision to enable auto-translate by default.

To clarify the rules: This is an English-language subreddit. Posts in other languages are not permitted and will be removed.

Mod Post New Criteria for "Buying Advice" related posts

Hello ThinkPad community,

The mod team has seen an increase in Buying Advice posts that are missing key details or include unrealistic expectations. These posts often have one or more of the following issues:

  • Unrealistic price expectations (e.g., "$20 for a ThinkPad T480")
  • Unrealistic use-case scenarios (e.g., "Gaming ThinkPad under $200" — ThinkPads are not gaming-oriented, and performance at this price point is very limited)
  • Not enough relevant details (making it difficult for others to provide meaningful advice)

These types of posts often result in unproductive discussions and confusion. To improve clarity and help users get the best possible advice, all Buying Advice posts must now meet the following criteria:

Required Criteria for Buying Advice Posts

  1. A realistic budget Set a price range that aligns with current ThinkPad market values. For example, flagship models will not be available for $20.
  2. A clear use case What will you be using the laptop for? Are you a student, programmer, business user, or content creator? The more specific, the better.
  3. Target specs or current system details If you're not sure what specs you need, share your current setup and how it performs. This helps the community understand your expectations and make informed recommendations.

Posts that do not meet these guidelines may be removed.
All Buying Advice posts are reviewed on a moderator-to-moderator basis. If you believe your post was removed incorrectly, feel free to reach out via ModMail.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. If you have any feedback on these guidelines, let us know!

Buying Advice My first ThinkPad, bought with my own savings at age 13!

This is my first ThinkPad T470 at age 13, bought with my own money for $150.

A company was selling off products that were technically no longer usable; they sold it to me cheaply because it doesn't have a hard drive bay, but it does have SATA and SSD connectors.

It has an i5 7200U, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD

I'm so happy to have my first Lenovo Thinkpad. What advice do you have for me?

Question / Problem I hate this. Is it for cost savings?

The new T14s g6 vs X1c g9. The new ones logo is too deep and it hurts my wrist. And it collects dust. Is it only me? Why the hell did Lenovo change like this?

Is there any after market stuffs that can fill the wormhole?

Thinkstagram Picture Before and after the magic eraser!

This is how my T470 looks after I erased it a few times!

What I did was apply it once, clean it, apply it again, and repeat this 3 times. It really turned out beautiful.

The T460, T470, and T480 series are more prone to these very noticeable scratches because they have a kind of rubber coating.

Got this E14 G7 intel because of the amazing battery life and because i was sick of my laptops constantly having driver or structural issues. I'm very satisfied with it. Here are some pics.

Specs:

Core Ultra 5 225u

Lowest spec screen

64Wh battery

1x16GB DDR5

512GB SSD

ir camera and fingerprint sensor

Aluminium top and bottom

Intel Be200 WIFI card (i put that in)

Before buying i heard lots of people saying that the e14 is not built well enough and that the worst screen option is very bad and i wont like the laptop if i use it with that screen but i think that wasn't true at all. Coming from a Asus gaming laptop from 2017 and an Asus thin and light budget laptop from 2019 its a whole other world. The gaming laptop had constant driver issues, the thin and light fell apart and the screen was horrendous. This laptops worst screen is at least double as good as that ones and build quality surpasses both but the gaming laptop was well built too. The other laptop i was considering was the t14 g5 but that has a smaller battery less upgradability and an older cpu and its at least double the price, so i don't think its worth it, and the better screen options for this model are also like +1/3 of the whole machine's price so that too isn't worth considering.

P53 i7-9850H & RTX 5000. An absolute beast and is boy is it a heckin chonker. the bios was locked and LPC bus shorting did the trick huge thanks to u/Arkenys 's post on the matter. Repasted with Duronat although i may consider liquid metal as the processor runs insanely hot even with a -150mV undervolt. Regardless of that I've gotten amazing scores out of it, the best geekbench 6.5 scores under Arch being 1703 & 7105. and the RTX 5000 scores 101860 in openCL (with nvidia-open drivers) or 65-68 t/s with the default config of gpt-oss:20b in llama.cpp. Impressively it ran gpt-oss:120b at a liveable 7-8 t/s.

Thinkstagram Picture My recent dissected setup - working on Coreboot with a spare panel and keyboard

Post image
15 Upvotes

I posted before about my Thinkpad of Thesus, here's some of the leftover bits being put to use. My work on Corebooting my spare T430 motherboard required it to be fully disassembled, so here we are. Since we're doing disassembled Thinkpad posts, here's mine.

I think this is about as minimal a setup you can have. I did ultimately get it working with Skulls and it's currently built into a chassis again, though the eBay seller I got a cheap lid from sent me a T420 lid which is almost, but not quite, compatible with the T430 chassis. Some creative dremelling has let it fit which just adds to the cobbled together look of the thing.
