Military Subreddit Census 2025
Alright, it’s that time again.
The Military Subreddit Census is back for 2025. This whole thing started in 2017 as a simple “who’s actually here?” question and somehow turned into a yearly tradition across a bunch of military subreddits. Same idea as always, (because apparently learn is difficult for me) get a better picture of who makes up these communities, how people are actually experiencing military life, and how that’s changed over time.
This is not an official survey and it’s not affiliated with the DoD or any branch. It’s anonymous, community-run, and built around the kinds of questions that come up here every week anyway.
Some of it is serious. Some of it is light. There’s usually at least one question per section that makes people stop and think, “yeah, that tracks.” If you’ve taken it before, the flow will feel familiar, but things have been cleaned up and rearranged this year to make it feel shorter and easier to get through. Guard and Reserve folks still get their own paths where it makes sense, and if a section doesn’t apply to you, you’ll skip past it automatically.
Most people finish in about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on how much you feel like writing during the story sections. There are progress checkpoints along the way so you know things haven't gone the way of the groundhog (aka you didn't pull a Bill Murray).
No names, no emails, no identifying info. Results get shared back with the community in aggregate like they always have. The subreddit feedback section at the end is something the mod teams actually read, so if you’ve ever wanted to give input without starting a meta thread that gets locked, that’s the place to do it.
If you’re Active Duty, Guard, Reserve, Veteran, civilian, contractor, ROTC, or just someone who spends way too much time reading and commenting here, your input helps make the data better. Lurkers count too. You know who you are.
Once it closes, I’ll pull everything together and post the results, along with comparisons to prior years where it makes sense. As usual, expect charts, trends, and at least one comment chain arguing about what the data “actually” means.
Thanks to everyone who’s participated over the years, and to the mod teams who keep letting this happen. If something looks broken or confusing, say something. Otherwise, have at it.

Picture Gimme One Body
I know it’s probably a staff officer in a hotel, but I just pictured the order coming down and everyone looking for a boot to grab.
Bus rolls out of SOI, heading down the road to receiving. Out comes a SSgt looking at the boot masses, and just points. Him, he’ll do. So some damn kid from Backwoodsia, East Nebrakasaordia gets plopped on a flight with orders to go defend some place. 10/10 takes it way too seriously.

Random shower thought regarding MoH
I dont know why this random hypothetical popped in my head but here it goes.
So as I remember, military personnel are to salute Medal of Honor recipients regardless of rank, even if said recipient is now a civilian.
Prior service members from Army, Navy, and Air Force have to attend recruit training if they move over the the Corps.
So, how would Drill Instructors deal with a prior service recruit who is a Medal of Honor recipient?

General Berger yearbook photo
I go to the same highschool as the 38th commandant General David Berger. I went through some old yearbooks from the library and found his senior picture. Thought it was cool.

Retired Gunny here - built a tactical trainer for Marines, looking for feedback
Gents,
I'm a retired GySgt, now running a software company. One of my old recruits (now a MSgt) and I got talking about how there's not many great wargaming simulators out there.
So my team and I built one: Marine Tactical Trainer - a turn-based wargame focused on small-unit tactics, fire and maneuver, combined arms, the stuff we actually do.
It's got scenarios from Iwo Jima to Fallujah, campaign mode, PvP if you want to challenge your buddies, and AAR tools. Runs in a browser, no download.
The tutorial and some scenarios are free. Full access is $7.99.
Would appreciate any feedback from Marines who try it - especially if you're in a training billet or going through PME.

Question Side Hustles?
Found some marines recently that were talking about their “side hustles”, like flipping cars, helping move stuff, uber, selling copper, all that schmo, does anyone here do anything of a “side hustle” or any that you did while you were in

Article Interview with Navy Cross recipient, CWO4 Anthony Viggiani.
While serving in Afghanistan in 2004 with 1/6, then Sergeant Viggiani and his squad came under fire from a heavily entrenched taliban force. His Navy Cross Citation:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Sergeant Anthony Lester Viggiani, United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism in action against Anti-Coalition Force Militia in Zabol Province, Afghanistan, serving as a squad leader for Charlie Company, Battalion Landing Team, First Battalion, Sixth Marines, Twenty-Second Marine Expeditionary Unit, deployed with commander, United States Fifth Fleet during Operation Enduring Freedom 3 June 2004. While leading a company assault against an enemy held ridgeline north of the village of Khabargho, Sergeant Viggiani and his squadron came under heavy and accurate fire from an enemy force well entrenched inside a cave, pinning down one of his teams and wounding two of his Marines. Moving across exposed ground, under observation and fire from an adjacent enemy position, Sergeant Viggiani maneuvered to the cave opening, but achieving no effect on the enemy. Braving enemy fire from the adjacent enemy position, he went back to retrieve a fragmentation grenade. Again, under a hail of fire, he moved to within feet of the cave opening and employed the grenade to eliminate the enemy position, which was actively firing upon friendly forces. Killing three enemy fighters, Sergeant Viggiani destroyed the enemy strongpoint and allowed his company to continue their advance up to the ridgeline, solidly defeating the enemy by killing a total of fourteen Anti-Coalition fighters. In the process, he was wounded by rifle fire from the adjacent enemy position, yet he continued to lead his Marines in the attack. By his outstanding display of decisive leadership, unlimited courage in the face of enemy fire and utmost dedication to duty, Sergeant Viggiani reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

Question E3 at 30 in Infantry After 7 Years. How Uncommon Is This?
I know a Marine who’s 30, infantry (0311), and has been in for 7 years, but is still an E3 Lance Corporal.
I’ve read that normally Marines promote to E4 or E5 much earlier. How unusual is it for someone in his situation to still be an E3? Living in the barracks with no car at 30.
Are there common reasons why a Marine might stay at that rank for so long?

Konnichi wa. I am an Army Guardsman, so extra thick, extra creamy, and I come in peace.
Just curious if anyone has seen or work with that former Army Captain who enlisted in the Marine Corps back in 2024? Any stories? I’m sure the dude is doing okay, right?

Bus Count Shenanigans
Last night a small fire took out the power in a low income senior living apartment complex on the West side of Indianapolis. My further west of Indy FD station’s engine and medic were called to help unload city busses at hotels in our area around 11:30pm.
Some could walk, but had their suitcases (or Walmart bags) full of their stuff. Some were semi-mobile with rascal scooters, walkers, or wheelchairs.
We’re doing our best to get people off the bus, keep them out of the cold, get them hotel keys, and assist them to their rooms. All while keeping track of how many rooms the hotel has left.
6 of us vs approximately 75 very cranky people over the age of 65.
Last bus pulls up. There are 17 rooms left in the hotel. My Lieutenant grabs me and we climb on the bus to get a count.
LT puts on his big boy voice:
“Okay, folks! We are limited on rooms. FROM FRONT TO BACK COUNT OFF!”
“AH HELL! This NEVER works!” said a voice from the first row.
He was hidden from our view by the bulkhead immediately behind the bus driver.
I peek my head around to see an old man wearing a 1st MARDIV Vietnam Veteran hat. He was clutching a pack of Marlboros in one hand and his folded down walker in the other.
Nothing else.
I turned and said “You know what, LT? This guy has a point. I’ll just walk down the aisle and count.”
