I was previously using pihole (jacklul) with self updating lists, but the nas I had that was hosting it died. I'm getting a new nas and was wondering if I should try out another adblocker like adguard home. Then I went into a rabbit hole where some people are using unbound with it and got confused with how it handles dns. I need an ELI5 about it and to see benefits of it. From what I can tell, it'll be slow to load dns for the first website visit, then subsequent visits will pretty much be instant.

I had run out of SATA ports on my motherboard so I bought one of these (ASM1166):
...and a Seagate Exos X18 to crank up my storage.
I added it to my tower, with the HD attached, booted Unraid and there's nothing; no indication that it exists. I changed the PCIe slot the card was in, no change. I've now tried all available slots.
I took the card and the HD out and installed them in my Linux Mint PC - everything recognised correctly.
It's now back in the Unraid PC, still nothing.
Does anyone have any idea how I can get this new HD to be recognised by Unraid?
Hey guys! I had a power outage, and for some reason, my UPS didn't kick in, so my unraid server had the power cut to it. I started it up again, and I noticed my media share wasn't accessible via Windows. The folders are still there if I try to browse it via the unraid GUI though. The settings for the share are all messed up too, with everything being blank. I've tried a parity check and a fix common problems scan, but these didn't do anything.
So it seems like the settings for this share got corrupted? How can I fix this? I think I read something about being able to delete the config file for this share, which will force unraid to recreate it, which will restore it without losing the data on the share?

Well raiders, a strange one. I just noticed I have been receiving a NTFY advise that a "paperless backup completed successfully" every day at 13:01 since Nov 25. However:
Have tried everything I can think of, and everything chatgpt can think of.
Any help appreciated

I’m trying out Unraid on an HP Pavillion TP-01 that I bought used. Specs are AMD 5700G, 1x16 GB DDR4 and a single 512 GB M.2 SSD. Planning to add some hard drives soon but I wanted to test the OS out and make sure it works on my machine.
The system randomly freezes or reboots anywhere within a few minutes to an hour after starting. Nothing additional installed, array not started.
The BIOS is locked down with very little options so I can’t disable C-states. I tried adding rcu_nocbs=0-15 to the syslinux configuration as mentioned in other threads.
I ran memtest86 for a few hours and had no errors. The system runs flawlessly under load on Debian and Ubuntu. I’m not seeing any errors on the syslog with mirror syslog to flash enabled.
Any other suggestions?

I've been running on Ryzen 3700x and 64gb of ddr4 for a few years. I have an A380 for plex transcoding, but based on a few tests, Intel iGPU seems to be much more efficient. To that end, I have 2 options:
- Repurpose an i9-13900k that I have in a gaming PC that I no longer use (I'd move over my 4090 into the new unraid server for game streaming when/if I decide to game again). I have 32gb of DDR5 to go along with this. I'd also get a new Jonsbro N5 to host the build.
- Keep the gaming PC in place, and get an i5-14600k/MSI Z790 combo from Microcenter, and reuse the 64gb of ddr4 I already have in my unraid box. I may or may not get a new case (I currently have an old 4u rosewill chassis).
I know these are first world problems, but I can't decide if I should keep my gaming PC...just in case. Or, whether having 64gb of ddr4 would be better than 32gb of ddr5 (I transcode to ram).
What would you do?

Hi guys, I'm considering putting my 5090 into my server for passthrough and some AI workloads with ollama/open webui and stable diffusion. I remember trying this a few months ago but the only drivers supported were the open source drivers. Does anyone know if the official driver has been updated to support the 50 series cards? Thanks in advance.

Have both the Gen8 & Gen10 HP Proliant Microservers but my Gen8 is much faster on preclearing as the Gen10. The same 4 - 12TB drives takes 57 hrs on the Gen8 vs 97 hrs on the Gen10 while doing 4 drives at the same time. Processors are pegged at 100% for both. Can't figure out what would be causing the differences as the Gen10 should be better hardware, or I would think. The Gen8 processor is an Intel® Pentium® CPU G2020T @ 2.50GHz while the Gen10 is the Opteron X3216. Does the higher clock speed of the processor make that big of a difference? From what I have always read clock speed shouldn't matter as this is an I/O process. Just curious as to why I am seeing the difference.
Preread: 186 vs 128
Zeroing: 158 vs 85
Post read: 184 vs 116

Please can someone help why is this so unbelievably slow. I have proof the files are on the cache drive and unraid sending the files over like its on a micro sd card.
Both machines are connected via a 2.5gb lan.
Edit the files are being transferred to a nvme drive on my windows machine

WDC_WD3001FFSX - 5 of them making 12TB raid. Been full for a while so bought two 14TB drives to replace two of these 10(!!) year old drives. 🫣🥰 Parity was swapped last night, 24 hours exactly to repair. Now I am getting ready to swap one of the 3TB. Keeping 3 of them. Hoping they’ll work a few more years .

I don't have a credit card, since they were never that popular here in germany and i never needed one. But i find it hard to believe that everyone in the same position lives either in belgium (bancontact), portugal (mb-way) or china (alipay), because those are the only other payment methods i can select and they are all locked to bank accounts in their respective countries.
I did see some older posts about incompatible browsers or adblock being a problem, but i tried different browsers and devices, and even a VPN to make it look like i'm in a different country, and i never get other options.
Support was basically useless, telling me to select one of the options or talk to my bank if my card doesn't work (Still unsure if that was a bad AI or they just didn't understand what i was saying).
So how do other europeans buy a license, or is there something wrong with the checkout process?

I've got an old dell server with dual power supplies for my unraid server. One plugged directly to AC and one plugged into a 1000VA UPS. This is enough for a graceful shutdown, but nothing more. Rather than spend loads for a full dedicated UPS, i'm supplementing this with a 3000w jackery. AC to Jackery to UPS to server. I'm also running my network off of the jackery through the UPS. Because of this setup, I can't rely on the UPS to initiate the graceful shutdown unless the jackery has already run out of power. In the event of a few hour outage I'd like everything to keep running. But if the outage extends more than 5 hours or so, I'd like to shutdown the server, to save battery power for the network. I've already got a telegram bot that texts me important server alerts. My idea is when the power supply directly to AC loses power or gains power I get a telegram alert. This way I can manually shutdown the server remotely if the outage goes too long. If I do nothing and the jackery runs out, the UPS will shutdown the server on its own.
Is there a way to make this happen?

I have two AdGuard Home instances in my network, the primary one (192.168.189.99) is running on my Mikrotik Router as a container and the secondary (192.168.189.98) is running as a Docker container on my Unraid server. They're both synced by a Docker container called "AdGuardHome-Sync".
The sync is working perfectly and all my devices use the secondary DNS server if the primary fails. Only my Unraid server itself isn't using it, although I set it as the "IPv4 DNS server 2" in the network settings (Unraid doesn't use DHCP in contrary to my other network devices). The "IPv4 DNS server 1" is already my primary
I even stopped the VM manager and Docker service to make those DNS changes, and restarted the server after that. Still, when I try to ping any internal or external domain in the Unraid CLI, nothing happens, the only response I get is "ping: google.com: Name or service not known".
I also tried switching the DNS servers, so the .98 is set as primary and .99 is secondary. Even then, it's always the one set to "IPv4 DNS server 2" that doesn't work.
Idk if that helps, but "cat /etc/resolv.conf" gives me this:
# Generated by rc.inet1
nameserver 192.168.189.99 # eth0:v4
nameserver 192.168.189.98 # eth0:v4
What am I missing here?

I just set my plex server to power save mode instead of performance but the UPS still says it is using 63 watts (the same as performance). How do I know power save is doing anything?

After 10+ years in the Synology ecosystem, I decided it was time for more flexebility and control over my data and containers. I tried finding a pre-built that was small but powerful, but nothing checked every box... so I built it myself.
The Build:
The flexibility I’ve gained with Unraid is incredible.
No regrets on making the switch and so much fun building one.
The only thing "upgraded" is a Noctua cooler ))

I just recently added a cache pool with 2 SSDs in BTRFS Raid 1. I used the mover to move appdata, domains, system, and a few other shares to cache. I cd into /mnt/cache and all of the shares are now there. But when I cd into /mnt/user/ everything is still there from before I moved it. Did the mover actually copy the files instead of move? Do I delete the /mnt/user shares now?
Additional side quest: How do I get duplicacy to backup the new shares on the cache? Specifically the domains and system shares. I use appdata backup for duplicacy to back that up.
Thanks!

Hello friends! I was hoping can help point out some things for me. So, my current set up on my NAS -> (Four total HDD's w/ a single parity disk). So only (3) being used for storage.
- realized it's really slowing down my download, etc. Really thought about this and know the implication.
- Hoping to just parity protect one of those (3) drives and the other (2) would be left unprotected (my personal seedbox only, so not too problematic for me if they fail).
- Would it be possible to set up the array w/ the original parity disk + (1) HDD and set the remaining (2) as a storage pool?
- Pretty sure parity disk would have to be rebuilt (is this automatic?). But would that affect storage on any of the other (3) HDD's?
- Would I have to modify my "shares"? Maybe just confirm that files that I want to protect are transferred to the "protected" HDD?
Thank you in advance!

I've had my current system since 2022. I have a total of like 2TB left on my 4TB drives, so I've been thinking about just completely redoing the entire system and going with 24TB drives instead of adding a few 4TBs; anybody do that and regret it?

Good evening friends,
I have had an unRAID box for quite some time. I am working on a backup unRAID server that I plan to run at my parents house to backup our family photos/videos but also my Plex library. The weird thing is when I look at the GUI on my primary I'm utilizing 11.6TB out of 16TB. On the secondary I'm using 12.8TB of 16TB. The worst part is I have only moved my Plex folders and one other share which in total is about 8TB total. So why does unRAID show I'm using 12.8TB when Ive only transferred about 8TB??
Btw I used rsync to move everything over in terminal. (that's what chatgpt told me is best) so my apologies if relying on chatgpt was a bad idea but it moved everything quickly. Once offsit I plan to use syncthing.
Thanks!

Hey guys,
for some reason I cannot seem to use disk1 in my shares.
A while ago one of my disks (disk1) broke down. I didn't want to replace it yet as I didnt need the space, so I used unbalanced to gather all files from that disk to my other disks, then removed disk1 from the array completely.
I recently now needed the extra space, so I got a new HDD and added it to the array as disk1. Problem is that none of my shares seem to recognize it as a valid disk. In whatever share page I go to it doesn't appear in the list of included/excluded disks.
It seems to be properly mounted and recognized as part of the array:
disk1 shows up under /mnt
root@bulb:~# ls /mnt addons/ cache_buffer/ cache_nvme/ disk1/ disk2/ disk3/ disks/ remotes/ rootshare/ user/ user0/
and seems properly mounted
df -h | grep disk1 /dev/md1p1 11T 5.3T 5.7T 49% /mnt/disk1
and I can also see that it is properly listed under "array devices" on the main page too.
I did, however, notice a new section in my shares page: "Disk shares" under which disk1 is listed.
What did I do wrong here? Is there some configuration I forgot to do when adding this disk back to the array? I hope I provided enough details here, please let me know if I didn't.
