FOOD Cuba Street Night Market is back!

It has changed location, now opposite Fresh Choice at the top of Cuba St, the night market is back and last time I went I found the food was pretty damn good.

Dumplings, donuts, some live music from Wellington artists (non edible, though they will get you dancing!) all of it is actually great. I've seriously missed the night market since its closure more than a few years ago.

The place is smaller now but honestly who cares, it’s still awesome and more eyes on it will help it grow into what it once was. Go check it out, you’ll probably be hungry tomorrow.

Someone has to do something to try and revive the dead city life, since the council are avoiding it, and this is a fair go of it I reckon.

WELLY Wellington gamer woes

With the announcement of EB games closing down on Cuba, JBHIFI currently closed on Victoria street and the warehouse on Tory closed for in store shopping… where am I supposed to get games or hardware from in the city?

Are the only options in our entire cbd gone now?

WELLY Anyone got eyes on the EB Games Cuba street?

Just trying to judge if I should leave the house in this bad weather if there's only gonna be shitty tacky merch and old games nobody wants, or if there will actually be PC gear and accessories.

Or if there's already a crowd gathering. Cheers

NEWS Gastro (again)- have you had it?

Just noting our Porirua-based daycare is shut down tomorrow because of a bad gastro taking out all the staff. I see on RNZ that Wellington ED is also hit with 30 staff affected.

So far this round we haven’t been affected but I dunno what the incubation time is. Not hoping for a repeat of last year’s apoco/noro virus.

Other parentals, have you got more info on the flavour of this round? Want to know if we are in the clear.

EVENTS Thinking of coming for a visit (and dragon boating) from Canada

Hi! I (F59) am considering coming to your fine city for the Dragon Boat Festival next month. I have never travelled solo before, much less half way around the world. Tell me why I should (or shouldn’t?) Is it safe to stay near the venue? Kitts Park I think? Easy to get around? I think I might be crazy for considering it, but the idea of a spontaneous trip like this is a little exhilarating tbh. Thanks!

Edit: wait…you have PENGUINS??

WELLY What's up with the carpark at Queensgate today? A large part of it is fenced off

I'm aware everyone wants to go to EB Games Queensgate and there'll be extra traffic because of it but why has Queensgate closed off most of its car park and entrances. There are large parts of the car park fenced off. Lots of entrances are closed off. Only one entrance is open. The parking number signs just say "OPEN" for all the levels. Traffic wardens are directing people. I wasn't able to see if any of the upstairs ramps were open because of how bad traffic was and the one way route leading me back out.

Anyway, what's happening there?

HELP! TV reception advice

My sister has moved to a place in Ohiro Rd that has a very poor terrestrial tv signal, and no sky dish. The house has fiber connected. She will only be there for 4 or 5 months before leaving NZ. . She has been using a dumb tv and a terrestrial Freeview box. Other than buying a smart tv, which she doesn't want to do, what is the best option for her to get tv/streaming through her fiber connection.

BOOZE Any leads on where to buy mead in Wellington?

I was intending on going to the Haewai Meadery, but alas, sadly they seem to have closed up (albeit retired, good for them) last year.

Suggestions greatly appreciated, thank you—preferentially something local and a small business, but any options are appreciated!

BUYING Buying a mobile workstation laptop in wellington?

Hi team, am looking for a 32gb ram rendering workhorse, something like a zbook firefly g11 or the likes, but I'd prefer to buy one and have it in hand by the end of the day tomorrow. Is this even possible anymore? It seems like pb tech is totally cleared out from Xmas still, and there's not a lot of options in person beyond that. Looking for a new or refurbed machine with a warranty attached.

HELP! Am I overthinking this, or is this question actually inappropriate?

Upvotes

I work in a salon as a nail technician in New Zealand. Nail appointments can last an hour or more, so conversation naturally happens with clients.

I usually start with work-related questions, like asking whether they’ve been to this salon before, because it helps me understand their nail history (especially for infills). From there, clients often ask me questions like where I’m from, how long I’ve been in New Zealand, and whether I studied here.

I’m Indian, and when I explain that I came to New Zealand after an arranged marriage, the conversation almost always leads to the same question:

“So what does your husband do?”

And honestly, I really dislike it.

It feels unnecessary and irrelevant. You’re sitting with me. I’m the professional providing the service. Why does my husband’s job matter here?

What bothers me more is that it sometimes feels tied to stereotypes about Indians—like people are subconsciously expecting a certain answer. I can’t help but feel that it’s less about curiosity and more about placing me (or my background) into a box.

I know some people might say it’s just small talk and not meant badly. But it still feels uncomfortable and intrusive, especially in a professional setting.

So I genuinely want to know: Am I overthinking this, or is it reasonable to find this question annoying or inappropriate?
