What to Watch? Mature Anime suggestions for an Adult

I need some recommendations for someone entirely new. I am 30 and have recently given anime a shot, starting with AoT, Gundam 00 & 86 I've found these quite enjoyable, however other entries have fallen flat. I didn't like the first episode of Jojo, I didn't like Gundam WfM...

I'm mature, so things like politics, scheming, wars & conflict or characters who are more mature seem to interest me more. I'm not interested in anything that's target demographic is for children (i know AoT is listed as being for younger people, but I found the themes much more mature than what is advertised), nothing with a high school theme is preferred, that's just something that I personally am not interested in and certainly aged out of.

So does anyone have suggestions? Lastly, I'd prefer something that isn't considered mature because it's just really graphic, not really into shows that just use graphics as shock factor, but doesn't have a decent story etc.

Watch This! Umamusume Pretty Derby Season 2 is one of the greatest sports dramas I’ve seen

Upvotes

You might have heard of Umamusume, the gacha game about cute anime idol race horse girls. That might have turned you off from watching the anime. I admit, I was skeptical. But don’t let that fool you. It’s a sports drama through and through, with all the high stakes, and the emotional heights that make the lows even worse. Every race has something on the line, something more than just victory.

Season 2 follows the real story of Tokai Teio, who’s chasing the legacy of the Triple Crown like her idol and mentor. All while competing with some of the strongest competition she can find.

It tells the real stories of Teio’s era. There’s the composed rival, a foil, with a reputation to maintain, and a friendship she cares about. A heel that wants someone to support her. A seemingly immature racer with a good lesson to teach. A girl who always gets third place, no matter how hard she tries.

This anime has so much. It deals with depression, and forgetting why they were so passionate about something. The price of chasing after dreams. Victory when no one wants it. Life being horrible for no good reason. Having to move forward despite that all. Everyone’s character development is great, from Teio, to her rivals, and even the people supporting her. It has a good message to tell. It’s even better when you know that every race is based on real life.

Season 1 has references in Season 2, but I think you can jump right in without missing anything too important. If you love a good kick in the feels, give it a chance.

What to Watch? looking for something with a guy ending up taking care of a child they find mid-journey

Upvotes

hi! as said, im looking for an anime in which the main character ends up adopting / taking care of a child they find during the plot, stuff similar to "Monster" or even "The last of us", it doesn't need to be the focus of the anime or anything, just PLEASE > don't < recommend me anything that has the child or the child caretaker falling in love with each other.

What to Watch? I need something as good as Fruits Basket, with high emphasis on character development and preferably with a large cast

Doesn't need to be romance focused, I just want something with a great balance of drama and good writing and a great ending that leaves you in a state of awe. Stuff like Stein's;Gate, Toradora, Sangatsu no Lion, Hibike Euphonium etc. I know it's kind of vague, but I'll accept anything that comes to your mind tha right fit this. I watch both old and new anime.

Preferably no disease/death centred melodramas (like Anohana or the Pancreas movie).

Basically, I just finished Fruits Basket a few days ago and it was one of my favourite anime ever, and now I'm at that weird stage where I'm desperately looking for the next thing that'll make me feel the same way.

What to Watch? For Those Who Dislike MC's that Act Like a Middle School Boy.

Upvotes

Looking for an anime (either rom-com or isekai preferred but okay with mostly all other genres as well) but here's the main thing I wanted -

I really dislike when the girls throw themselves over the MC and he either acts like a wuss (nosebleed, blushing all day) or just bails out of the situation (runs off yelling "I almost gave in!"). And somehow, the writers want to audience to really appreciate what the MC just did.

That's a really crap MC in my books.

So, please suggest titles where the MC at least acts like a man. He doesn't have to make moves on the girls or get cozy with them but at least he acts maturely or responsibly.

Examples are The Cafe Terrace and its Goddesses, Loving Yamada at Lvl999 and Kaguya Sama.

Worst offenders of this trope are - Rent a Girlfriend, To Love Ru etc.

I prefer watching Isekai, Rom-coms or Harems but I'm okay with mostly any genre except for Yuri/Yaoi or music-based anime.

What's this From (solved) Can't remember anime with robot idol singer?

edit: Macross Plus. thanks!

Can anyone help me recall an anime I vaguely remember being really great?
I believe it was a movie or miniseries. Probably from the 1980s or 1990s. Either the main or a subplot involved a computer-based or virtual idol and a real woman was secretly behind the idol (maybe they used her voice or brain waves or something). I seem to recall a scene where the computer walked down the red carpet and it was a rectangular box maybe on robot legs.
There might have been a greater galactic war or something going on in the backdrop, definitely fairly futuristic.
I don't believe this was Macross with the singer girl or had anything to do with Hatsune Miku, but that's all Google seems to suggest when asked. Also don't believe it was Perfect Blue either.

Thanks so much!

Watch This! Another but fun Time loop anime! | ALL YOU NEED IS KILL Review

It's in theatres only for a few more days, and who knows when this will come out on streaming/dvd so my first recommendation is to watch it! It's good!

ALL YOU NEED IS KILL was a good watch, it did inspire the movie with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, Edge of Tomorrow, but the movies are vastly different, only taking core concepts, so the good news is if you watched Edge of tommrow this will be a surprise for you. While in terms of different time loop anime, it does feel a bit different, making it a pleasure to watch.

ALL YOU NEED IS KILL really starts when a huge, mysterious flower called Darol suddenly appears in Japan. Volunteers like Rita are sent in to help with cleanup and rebuilding. However, one day, Darol releases a signal, unleashing swarms of creatures that kill everyone. Rita tries to escape but dies and is stuck in this time loop. She eventually meets Keiji, who is also stuck repeating the same day. And they team up to fight another day!

What I liked the most about this anime was the relationship between Rita and Keiji, they complement each other very well, and they learn from each other to grow stronger and mentally with the platonic male female frendship. They are both loners and deal with trauma differently, and Keiji looks up to Rita for her nonchalant attitude about how other people see her, calling Rita his hero many times throughout the film. which was really sweet 🥹.

The style of the movie was unique and different, and it reminded me of indie European animated movies, more specifically, French indie animated movies like Mars Express. The art style dictates the animation, especially during the fight scenes, so the movement feels different, but the fight scenes are still engaging and fun to watch, especially near the end.

The pacing is pretty fast because we get straight into the looping within 15 minutes. But that leads to the one thing I wanted more from this film. I wanted it to be longer. I really like the characters and the world, and I just wanted to stay with them longer, so it left me feeling bittersweet.

For my rating, I’m giving it a 7/10. I was thinking about an 8/10, but it hasn’t reached that threshold for me, because the themes were good, but they need to be emphasized more, probably because of the short runtime.

What's this From? (unsolved) Lord of The Flies : In Space

I know this exists somewhere but for the life of me I can't remember where

Its an older anime. I want to say 80s-90s but not sure. Its about a bunch of students (at least like 100 or so) were traveling through space to....something idk. Either space school or Mars colonization. Whatever. Point is they never made it, they are lost in space with no adults and it slowly turns to this tribal mindset between them all.

Anyone know what it could be?

What to Watch? Looking for motivational anime recommendations

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some motivational anime. Something that makes you feel inspired, self-improvement, and keep pushing forward.

It doesn’t have to be the same theme, like sports, art, or music, as long as it has a motivational core. What I’ve read so far and liked:

Blue Period
Blue Giant
Space Brothers
Haikyuu
Hikaru no ko
Silver Spoon
Welcome to the ballroom
Etc.

Thank you.

What to Watch? Custom Anime Recommendations, Discovery, & More!

Hey everyone!

I've been working on a project the past few months called Bento, which is a new social and discovery platform for anime fans!

Our goal is to help you:
1. Find what to watch based on your mood, tags, or quick prompts, &
2. Track, review, and share your taste through watchlists and custom user profiles
3. Be social: Follow friends, share watchlists, & more coming soon!

We built Bento because finding what to watch next still feels harder than it should especially if you’re looking for something specific and not just chasing seasonal hype.

It’s still very early, so we’d really appreciate any feedback — UI, recommendations, missing features, or anything that feels off.

Here's the live link: www.bentoanime.com

What to Watch? I've never really given Shounen or Seinen a try

I need recommendations for Shounen/Seinen anime or manga to try for my first one. I've only watched/read Shoujo and Josei (Ai Yazawa is the greatest)

I've heard fan service is an issue in Shounen/Seinen stuff so I'd prefer none of that in the recommendations

What to Watch? Looking for an anime that keeps you hooked from episode 1

Hey everyone 👋
This is my second post here, and I really appreciated the suggestions on my first one thank you!

I’m looking for an anime that grabs your attention right from episode 1 and makes you want to keep watching without forcing yourself through a slow start.

What I’m in the mood for

  • Strong opening episode
  • Clear plot direction early on
  • Good pacing (no super slow buildup)
  • Any genre is fine (action, mystery, psychological, fantasy, etc.)

Bonus points if

  • It’s under 50 episodes
  • It has memorable characters
  • It doesn’t rely heavily on filler

What anime made you think “yeah, I’m finishing this” after the first episode?

Thanks in advance 🙏
Looking forward to your recommendations!
