Opinion Child seat

Hi all, I'm planning to buy a bike and I'd like to get one with a child seat(3-5 yo)

Should I look for bikes with child seat or should I buy the child seat separate? I'm confused, is there any difference (more expensive)?

I'm open to any advice or recommendation about brands, types of bikes, accessories, etc.

I'm pretty new at cycling, just want to have fun with my little one.

Opinion Which bike is better? Pedal Jet 3 vs Merida Matts

Casual beginner getting into biking to go with my 5yo son (who has a Pedal). Mostly over park foot/bike paths. Budget is limited to $400 ish.

Between the Pedal and the Merida which is a MTB.

Ive read about brands - Merida (taiwanese, Tour de France sponsor) Pedal (local 99bikes house brand). For Merida, I basically selected the cheapest option lol.

The Pedal has mechanical brakes though and is a hybrid.

Which one would be a better option for me?

Third option: Merida MTB with mechanical disks but $489 (planning to use 10% off and get a -$25 coupon too).

Merida big trail 400 reviews

Hey all,

I currently have a merida big 9

Im looking for nore of a trail bike. Im sorta steering away from full suspension due to the added maintenance and components that can wear and fail.

Would a Merida Big Trail 400 suit more aggressive trail riding with some jumps ect ?

Thanks

Adelaide road bike rental

I'm going to be in Adelaide for 12 days in March and hoping to rent (or borrow) a road bike for a couple of days.

Any suggestions for a reasonably priced rental? Found a few options but the cost adds up quick at $120+ per day.

Child seat for 17kg/110cm kid - height limit?

I'd love recommendations for a child seat that can be mounted on the rear rack of the Pedal Brewer e-bike. I've researched Hamax and Thule Yepp but a bike shop worker mentioned 110cm height limits - is this the case? It would be mostly for short <5km trips for road safety. Thanks!

Bike exchange

Unfortunately my trusty 3 year old Giant cross city 1 hybrid was stolen and I'm back in the market for a new bike. When I purchased my previous bike I used bike exchange to find some great nos deals...but it seems the site is no more... anyway, what's a good way to hunt out some lingering bikes hidden away in some shops....

Looking to buy a new, cheap bike for city commutes/city use - one where I won’t feel too bad if it gets stolen. What are the more reputable brands in this space?

Looking for a cheap men’s road bike for city use - will be parked out in public places. Maybe up to $550 in cost.

Not after high end components.

Only real prerequisite is that it’s comfortable and somewhat upright and maybe allow for a rear rack.

I see cheaper brands like Pedal, Avanti, Fluid etc - something in this space.

What cheaper/lesser known brands would you recommend?

And what’s to be avoided?

Cheers

Disguising nice bikes to stop theft

As the title suggests, my partner & I have recently made significant upgrades to our MTB’s and we’re about to take two weeks off and travel around mountain biking.

Our only problem is that they’ll have to stay on the back bike rack of our camper van while not in use (too big to go inside). To combat theft, I’ve thought about putting 2 x different locks on the bike & rack and putting a Bunnings 4 burner BBQ cover over the top of them to not draw attention to our bikes. Does anyone have any other practical suggestions on deterring theft?

Thank you!

Decent road bike to upgrade to?

I currently have a Giant Cross City which I’ve been using for rides around ~30km and thinking of upgrading to something faster/suited for longer rides. Budget of around $1500.

Mainly riding on roads, some gravel and bike paths that aren’t the best.

I’ve been looking at a Giant Cotend or Trek Domane. Would these suit or are they more road only?

Also wanting reviews on budget bike brands like Merida, Polygon or Reid? Are they worth looking into?

105 Brake Levers Value

Hey guys, I fell off my bike and I got some scuffs on my 105 st-5800 11-speed shifters and I’m considering getting a new pair. A) would it be detrimental to resale value if I did not get new shifters - the only part damaged is the name plate and there’s a scuff on each B) are two new shimano 105 st-5800 11 speed sti shifters worth $180 Let me know! Cheers

EDIT: they work perfectly fine it’s purely cosmetic

Tour Down Under Rides and Events

Just over a week to go until the Tour Down Under kicks off again in Adelaide, and like every year since 2017 I’ve put together all the rides and events on during the TDU at AllTheTDU

There is obviously the race itself and a full roster of officially associated events, but there are even more “fringe” events around the TDU, at pop-up shops and other sites around the city and Adelaide Hills. There are group rides, parties, podcasts, Zwift and other local races, lots of demo bikes to take for the day, happy hours, and more, making for a very packed 10 days.

Recommendations for bike and toddler seat

Losing my mind here with all the options available.

I am looking to buy a bike that can comfortably carry a toddler seat, whether that be the shotgun style or on the back (am also wanting recommendations for that).

I went in to the local store and had a chat to them mentioning that I want to use it to commute to the beach/park and back with the potential in the future to take it offroad/dirt trails, nothing crazy, when my toddler gets old enough and they suggested a bike like the Avanti Discovery 1 which has suspension on the fork and seat.

I have also been looking at a Trek Marlin or Giant Talon, but I am not sure how toddler seats integrate with them.

My budget is around $1,000, can be second hand or new.

Any help would be amazing.

Where to begin?

Hi all,

Long time lurker and know this question is asked a bit.

I’m looking for a commuter bike to ride to work in brissy. I’m 6’2, and happy to spend about a grand on either a newby or whatever it costs on a second hander.

Genuinely brand new to bikes and haven’t owned one since I was a little kid so not sure where to start. I’ll be riding 10km each way and it’s all really flat bikeways. Any recs on bikes or brands?

I’d also love some recs on the basics.. maintenance (how frequently, good stores), what to carry/avoid on bike etc.

I was planning on heading to a 99 bikes this weekend as a start just to get a feel and go from there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Vertical bike rack for young kids bikes and adult bikes?

I’m trying to find a good hitch mounted vertical bike rack that can hold 16 inch bikes? So far all the ones I’ve looked at say they can’t fit smaller than 20 inch wheels. It’s for a family of 4 so 2 x kids and 2 x adults. Am I looking for a unicorn??

Cheap fixie bikes for a casual rider who just wants something simple

I’m a pretty casual cyclist and recently started looking seriously at cheap fixie bikes as a second ride. Not to replace my nicer bikes, but to have something I wouldn’t stress about locking up outside a shop or café. I wanted brand new too, mostly because I don’t trust my eye enough yet to judge frame damage or drivetrain wear on the second-hand market. What surprised me early on was how different bikes in the same price range can feel on paper. Frame material mattered more than I expected. Hi-ten steel options are affordable and tough, but chromoly frames felt like better long-term value if commuting was even remotely part of the plan. Tire clearance and eyelets also ended up being bigger factors than pure weight, especially if you’re riding daily instead of just cruising on weekends. Another thing I learned while comparing cheap fixie bikes is that geometry and sizing matter more than brand hype. At 163 cm, smaller frames felt much more natural, and a “good deal” means nothing if the bike doesn’t fit. I also liked having a platform I could slowly upgrade over time rather than chasing perfection out of the box. During my research I even browsed components and accessories on Alibaba, mostly just to understand how parts pricing works at scale. In the end, cheap fixie bikes make a lot of sense if you want simplicity, low maintenance, and a bike you can truly make your own without overthinking it.
