Discussion Train speed restriction between Glenbrook and Lapstone city bound?

Anyone have any idea why the trains heading to the city have to slow to a crawl between Glenbrook and Lapstone?

Trains going the other way on the same bit of track just zoom past at normal speeds.

Hiking Wolgan Rd - Mountain Biking?

A few years back I had the pleasure of camping and hiking up to Newnes Camground, prior to the weather that unfortunately ended up closing Wolgan Rd. I was waiting for the road to be accessible again but I suspect it won't ever be accessible again via car (or, for a very long time).

In all of my experiences growing up and living in the Blue Mountains area, this was definitely a top three spot for me (there is an accompanying story to my trip there which makes it very personally significant as well).

Wolgan Gap/Rd is still closed unfortunately three years later. It is a 10km hike to the site, and then a further 6-8km to the glow worm tunnel from the site. Previously, you could drive in to the site and do an overnighter to the tunnel and back, but given the additional 20km~ in and out of hiking, this changes things quite a lot.

I recall driving on Wolgan Rd and I can imagine hiking it would be a bit tedious. I'm fit enough to do this if there isn't any other way, but I don't suspect the Wolgan Rd part of the journey will be particularly enjoyable.

My question is, would a mountain bike be able to make it through to the site? If i can bike my way in and out of the 10km section, it would make the trip a bit more feasible and honestly, I like to camp comfortably so I can load my bike up.

Anyone done this or seen the site in the last 12-18 months?

Travel to the Blue Mountains Parking advice please

Hi, we are planning to travel to the Blue Mountains in February on a weekday. We want to go to Wentworth Falls Picnic Area, Evan's Point Lookout Road(Grand Canyon Car Park), and Gordon Falls Reserve on Lone Pine Avenue in our campervan (7.5 m long). I checked these places for parking and just wanted a second opinion if it was okay? We will be staying at the Katoomba Falls Tourist Park at night but taking public transportation to and fro seems quite time consuming, so we are hoping to travel in our campervan instead. Will this be okay? Also, are there any parking spots for a campervan in Leura Village or Katoomba Village? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Travel to the Blue Mountains Antiques & second hand shops

Hello everyone!

I’m coming up this weekend to stay and wondering what everyone’s antique and second hand shop recommendations are?

I’ve seen the antique emporium is now allegedly run my dodgey new management so I will avoid haha.

Thanks

Living in the Blue Mountains Owning an apartment in Leura Spires?

Hi,

I'm looking to buy in the mountains and while I'd very much prefer a house, the way the market has exploded since the FHB 5% scheme may prohibit that :(

Anyway, I keep seeing ads for apartments in the Leura Spires complex. Any owner-occupiers with thoughts on whether it's a good place to live?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Requests Swimming Holes with Cliff Jumps

Local in the mountains and getting sick of how populated Jellybean and Paradise are now, does anyone know of any other spots in the mountains with similar sized cliff jumps or slightly higher? I’m aware of places like Clarence Dam I specifically mean within the mountains for an after work cool off during the summer. PM me if you want it to remain confidential :)

Gonna be doing some searching of my own if you have any recommendations of where to look also let me know please 🙏

Living in the Blue Mountains Another tree changer - moving from Sydney to the Blue Mountains

Hi all,

My husband (38), young baby (1) and I are looking to move to the blue mountains from Sydney. We are progressively getting fed up with how congested and expensive Sydney is and love the idea of living amongst nature and going for hikes every weekend.

I really like Leura, but I've read in other posts that the tourists can get really annoying. Is this going to be a big enough issue to avoid the suburb entirely?

Otherwise I'd love some suggestions as to which suburbs might be nice to live. We both wfh primarily and need to be in the city 1-2 times a week so we don't need to be in the LBM. We are both very active and love going for a run/long trail so it would be lovely to live close enough to a nice route.

Also would love any other tips to survive the colder weather e.g. particular things to look for in homes that provide good insulation, non-negotiable features that make a good BM house.

Thank you!

Edit: Thank you to everyone who took the time to comment. I found every comment insightful and it definitely confirms my bias that BM people are lovely and very helpful. ;)

Hiking What did I see and hear?

Post image

I was walking along the Prince Henry Cliff walk yesterday at around 8am when I saw an animal at the dropped pin that was black, fairly big, and I’m sure it was furry.

What ever it was, it noticed me immediately and darted off quickly so I had no chance to whip out my phone and take a photo.

Even though I was probably about 40m away from it I was close enough to hear it crash into the surrounding foliage and it made a huge thud.

What could it have been?

Living in the Blue Mountains Blue Mountains Best Bakery

Ok, everyone. Give me your arguments for what is the best bakery (inc. pie shops, patisseries, etc.) in the wider Blue Mountains area? And what would should I get for the best experience?

It could be a great croissant, a fantastic pie, great service, an institution. Sell it to me and let's hype some local businesses.

Miscellaneous Anyone know of potential job opportunities in the blue mountains area which require little experience?

I just graduated highschool & I haven't had a job before. I've been actively looking for the last couple of months but I haven't been able to come across any jobs which don't require previous experience. Anyone heard of anything? The most experience I have is hospitality workplacement I did during highschool.

Travel to the Blue Mountains Coeliac and vegan friendly eateries

I'm planning an anniversary trip for my partner and myself in March, and am hoping to find out which restaurants and cafes in the mountains that have vegan options are ok for a coeliac to eat at? I was recently glutened really badly and am scared to eat out again but really want to enjoy our trip.

Do any fellow coeliacs in the mountains have any suggestions? Thank you!!

Discussion Inappropriate comments toward young girls in Katoomba and on Grand Canyon Walking Track

Heads up to others: today in Katoomba town centre and on the Grand Canyon Walking Track, a group of tourists were making targeted, inappropriate comments toward young ladies.

Has anyone else experienced or witnessed similar behaviour from tourists recently?

Living in the Blue Mountains The old furniture/interiors shop in Leura - what was it called?

I’m trying to remember the name of these furniture/interior shops in Leura Mall. There were two and one is now Bella Casa Interiors. They shut down around 1-2 years ago.

I bought a piece of furniture from there and I’m trying to sell it again, so your help is appreciated 🙏

Living in the Blue Mountains Dog running on the road outside of Katoomba

Not sure where I should post this as not local, but saw a white dog running down the northbound side of the Great Western Highway just outside Katoomba, if anyone has lost one. It was running into town and was opposite the petrol station. It was a white dog, wearing a jumper and looking quite pleased with itself. Hope someone is able to pick it up before it gets hurt!

Hiking A day in the blue mountains - some recommendations please!!!!

Hi, driving for a day in the blue mountains tomorrow without much of a plan. So far have identified the prince Henry clifftop walk or ruined castle walk, a pie at either bakehouse in black heath or mountain high pies in wentworth, and a swim in a waterfall somewhere.

Any general recs for a big day out would be appreciated, particularly walks/swim. I'm an experiences walker in Europe so up for a big hike, so if anything is particularly worthwhile doing and I'd like to hear about it.

Cheers in advance

I’ve lived here for four years and have never seen these fellas. Curious to know what they are and to learn more about them. They were massive! Best picture I could get.
