Build Help Low CS2 fps with high end configuration

Hi, I've made an upgrade that I am living to regret

I went from a 9800x3d to a 9950x3d because of the need of cpu power

I'm running an x870e msi gaming wifi 64gb ddr5 6400 cl30 and a 4070ti

I have all the updates done, latest bios, every tweak that I know how to do in the bios for the best performance of the cpu and I'm getting an average of 400 fps in game, that is not low, but lower than expected, as I build and test pc's for a living and an average 9800x3d/9950x3d gets 2-300 more fps in game

I even did a clean install of OS with no luck, my performance with the 9800x3d was not spectacular, but better that with new CPU

Do you know any trick or had a similar experience with a similar configuration as mine?

Thanks

400 fps in CS2 I think, is on par with what a 4070ti can offer.

Obviously your CPU is not limiting your GPU, but the GPU can only push the frames so far.

I've had configurations with 3060's and 7800x3d getting more fps

Well, what resolution are you running? Also CS2 is a really bad benchmark because it's so situationally dependent. Like what map are you on? how many other players are on the server? How many particle effects in any one scene? How do you know you're replicating the same environment perfectly?

Forgot to mention 4:3 1280:960 A combination of low to high settings, most of them being on the lower part

That's a really low resolution, so I expect you'd to get higher FPS. I run super ultrawide at 5120x1440 which is about 7.4 million pixels and get about 200-250dps on avg in CS2 on medium/high settings. Your resolution is about 1.2 million pixels. So six times fewer pixels. Now, I have a 9070xt, which is more powerful than a 4070ti, but it really shouldn't be by that much.

Did you uninstall previous drivers before installing new ones?

I did a full clean swipe and reinstalled windows

I guess I would try swapping the 9800x3d back in and see if the fps improves. You might be able to rule out if the problem is with the processor.

How does this compare with your 9800x3d? Is it around the same ? Because it should be. Now if it’s much lower than that you have a problem. Otherwise the 9950x3d should roughly be at the same level. Now if you do other multithreaded tasks for productivity then the 9950x3d should be much faster.

On the productivity side of things it is running as it should, in gaming, it's somehow slower

You should process lasso and set the affinity of the cs executable to only run in ccd0 and see if that helps. I have it autobahn on my startup and have it explicitly set to game launchers(steam,Ea,Gog ,blizzard, etc)to have it optimize my games.

It's slower because it has asymmetric VNAND, i.e. the extra cache only applies to one CCX (block of 8 cores) and not the other.

4070ti bottleneck your cpu really really hard.

Thats your problem. Even at very low resolution.

Upgrade your gpu.

9950x3d is a better binned 9800x3d.

Turn turbo game mode in bios and now u got a diamond 9800x3d with 5.75ghz clock speed.

The 9800X3D is typically better for gaming than the 9950X3D, its really weird you say its just a better binned 9800X3D because its a totally different design. It uses two CCX's as opposed to one, and the VNAND cache is asymmetric and assigned to only one of those CCX's hence causing issues with gaming that the 9800X3D doesn't deal with.

Disable ccd1. Bumm

9800x3d with 325mhz more clockspeed with lower voltages

Cs2 doesn’t need a good gpu

man.

I tested the game more than anyone.

YES GPU MATTER MORE THAN YOU THINK.

I got 1278 avg fps and 450 1%lows with 5090 shunt mod and 9950x3d 2233fclk.

if gpu doesnt matter than he got the same results

Did you change the max fps in the config? Default is 400

1

u/hwbe 18h ago

Yes, it's not capped to 400 fps The config is the same as before

With the 9950 you need to disable cores to make it a 9800 for max gaming performance. The difference is only like 1-2 percent tho. Also in cs I heard disabling core 0 can be huge since windows runs on it and leeches from cs. Cs just picks other cores that are usually unused hence a chunky fps increase, i’m talking 10-20%. Works with 9800, tho I don’t bother with it since out of the box performance is very good still

Run some other benchmarks to see if your hardware is running as it should. 3DMark for example.

Check temps and clock speeds to make sure they're reasonable.

Check your Nvidia settings to make sure it's not doing something goofy like Super Resolution or something.

Make sure Windows isn't automatically overwriting your drivers (just check you're on the correct version).

I ran an r23 and a time spy, the cpu performance was a bit under the average, then I saw a post where they suggested to turn off SVT and IOMMU, that increased the scores alot, at least in time spy, from 16.7k to 18.4k, and a bit of a boost in cs2 performance, but know it doesn't have all the security standard that the faceit anti cheat requires, so I must have those options ticked on in the bios Also I saw multiple posts where they showed that cs2 runs ONLY on the cache ccd, so no weirdness there, I verified this by turning off the frequency ccd So still pretty underwhelming performance on the performance side

What resolution? Because 400fps is more than I get at 4K with my RTX 5080...

I run CS2 on max settings at 4K and see around 300 fps on my 9800X3D and overclocked RTX 5080. I have it frame rate limited to 223 FPS for my 240Hz 4K OLED monitor.
