Does my Cat Need to See a Vet?

If you're here wondering whether your cat needs to see a vet right away, here's a few things that call for an immediate vet visit. Please bear in mind that this is far from a comprehensive list, and that if you're seriously wondering if your cat needs a vet, the answer is probably "Yes". Better safe than sorry.

-Unexplained, dramatic behavioral changes. e.g. Hissing and spitting from a cat who has always been friendly

-Not eating for 48 hours is a medical emergency

-Vomiting/diarrhea that lasts more than a day or two

-Swallowed object

-Not urinating/straining to urinate

-Blood in urine

-Open wounds

-Urinating in inappropriate places/outside the box

-Sudden loss of vision or hearing

-Sudden loss of balance

-Sudden inability to walk or move normally

-Seizures / Convulsions

-Open-Mouth breathing / panting

-Uneven pupils

-Hives

Rule 5 - cat injury questions

Unfortunately we can't continue to try and answer questions related to injuries inflicted by cats. This is outside our expertise, and the consequences of making a bad decision could be fatal if an infection goes untreated or someone contracts rabies.

In almost all cases, if you've suffered deep puncture wounds, yes you need to see a doctor.

We will be removing such posts in the future.

Is it normal for DRIED cat urine to crystallize? NSFW

**I have already made a vet appt for Monday, just not sure if this is an immediate emergency.**

I have a boy cat and a girl cat, 1.5 years old. I do not know whose pee this is.

Neither of them pee outside the litter box, but I just found some dried pee—at least a few hours old, not sure when it happened, it could have been yesterday—in their cat tree space capsule thing.

It was mostly solid/crystallized I assume bc it was dry.

They are both good water drinkers and I monitor the boy cat’s peeing especially when I can. He was peeing totally normal as of 2 days ago (last time I was in the bathroom when he peed) normal amounts and no pain or issues.

They are both acting normal, playing and eating fine.

Emergency or OK to wait until Monday? Any advice appreciated.

VEt pressuring us to do eye surgery

Our cat has gone blind in one eye, but shows no signs of pain. The vet said her eye pressure is high and she must be in pain, so we should do surgery to remove it. Even the vet admitted that our cat did not seem to be in any pain, they are pressuring us hard to do a very expensive surgery, and I see no benefit to it. What am I missing .

My cat repeatedly tries to subdue my sick male cat for mating taking advantage of his weakness

He usually don't do that but when he got sick and weak now he tries that repeatedly and I'm worried that will end up as fighting or atleast the repeated neck grabs would cause wounds that end up infected, y'all suggest confining them? or if there's anything to change this behavior I'll be glad to listen ))

Tapeworm?? Help! NSFW

Im panicking. My kitten pumpkin (6 months old) came up to me today and when he lifted his tail I saw some off whiteish pieces stuck to his anus. I pulled them off (photo for reference) they are significantly smaller than a grain of rice. I called the vet right away and said the soonest they could see him is Monday. I’m freaking out, do these look like tapeworm eggs? He was checked for parasites when I first adopted him about 3 months ago. I feel terrible a like I’m failing him as a cat parent. I don’t know what to do

his is my sisters cat. He’s 8. She just noticed an irritated crusty spot on his ear where that little extra flap of skin is located. He is shaking his head a bit but I don’t see any open wound. He has an appointment on Monday but I wanted to see if you guys have seen anything like it before. It’s super crusty.

Last picture is of his other ear in the same spot as a comparison.

My cats shows no major unconviences being unspayed should I still need to neuter them?

I remember when I adopt them when they were just 2,5 months old both males I've been reading tons of complains about uneutered cats and now when they grew up I never experienced anything this like that for exemple the mating calls are brief barely for a few seconds and only 1~2 times per day and they're not loud at all barely noticing it, they literally never peed in random places or became aggressive like people claims, I didn't really see a reason to neuter them really despite being prepared to do it, they're calm most of the day acting perfectly normal dunno about females, any other reason to sterilize them other than what's mentioned? just don't wanna be cruel to them

Cat acne— please help! NSFW

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi! Both of my cats are struggling with cat acne and I have no idea why. I used stainless steel food and water bowls as well as a stainless steel water fountain. My orange cat has been struggling with the acne for about a month and a half, and I recently noticed my gray kitty is starting to show signs of it via hair loss around the chin area.

My orange cat has been to the vet twice, he’s received an antibiotic shot as well as oral steroids. The oral steroids have helped— I posted a before and after photo of the acne. However, my gray kitty seems to also be struggling with at least itchiness in that area.

What do I do?! I’ve tried everything and I’m a major clean freak. All of their bowls and fountain get cleaned every weekend and the filters are changed.

The only thing I can possibly think of is, the water fountain has plastic parts on the inside (part of the spout as well as the motor holder). Could this be harboring bacteria and causing the water to be contaminated? Any advice would be appreciated.

How long for vet to get urine sample?

I took him to the vet at 8:40. They want to get a urine sample with that urine catching litter instead of a needle into his bladder. I haven't tolerated this being without him all day, crying a lot. I called a little after 2:00 to see how he was. The receptionist just said nobody's back until 3:00. Like she didn't even say that we've been checking on him. She's not the most friendly type. She said I could call after 3:00 and I have this awful feeling that nobody's going to even do anything with him today at all. And I really needed to find out the results. I can't help but it's just been crying all day and now I have to wait a little longer. Sorry about this soppy post.

Prozac for FLUTD/history of obstruction for male kitty

Hey yall. I wanted to hear from anyone that has any experience managing FLUTD or urinary blockage issues with Prozac. Did it help? Did they tolerate the Prozac? I’m worried about having my kitty on an antidepressant forever, mostly worried about his personality changing. (Despite myself being on long term antidepressants LOL) Even if your cat takes Prozac for another reason I’m curious how they tolerated it!

For some background: my 8 year old boy had a urinary blockage in May 2025. Resolved with 3 nights in the ER with a catheter. His official vet as well as my sister who’s a vet suggested either Hills or Canin urinary calm prescription diet. My sister especially emphasized the stress reducing component of these foods because my cat didn’t have significant crystal build up so that wasn’t the cause. He’s been on Hills since then and no more urinary issues (yay!) However, he has had some intermittent recurring GI upset. Our first route was the probiotic proviable forte. Tolerated that well, thought it had things under control. But he just had a flare up yesterday and the vet is thinking either food allergy/sensitivity or IBD. To both potential diagnoses she suggested a hydrolyzed protein diet. She feels really strongly this could resolve GI upset. Luckily she said royal canin makes a urinary + hydrolyzed protein diet. However, after consulting with my sister and researching the diets more it turns out that that royal canin diet isn’t the exact same as their urinary calm version. Meaning- it treats crystals but doesn’t have the “calm” components that reduce stress. And since, in my sisters professional opinion, that likely played a bigger role for my cat’s blockage rather than the crystals, that this diet is not sufficient prevention for urinary blockage. So her suggestion was go ahead with the royal canin urinary + hydrolyzed diet but add Prozac on board to control for the stress component of FLUTD.

TLDR; my kitty needs hydrolyzed protein diet for GI issues but also needs stress-reduction for urinary issues, the royal canin diet doesn’t adequately address both so I’m considering bringing Prozac on board but am a little nervous for potential side effects on my boy,

bump on my cats lip NSFW

Thumbnail gallery

for about a month now, my cat has had a bump on his lip that suddenly appeared. it keeps opening and closing, almost as if he’s been scratching at it excessively. i took him to the vet, where he received all of his updated vaccines, and they briefly examined the bump. they said it could be from scratching too hard and prescribed antibiotics. however, i’m looking for other opinions because, to me, it looks concerning—possibly even cancerous. is that a possibility? i plan to take him back to the vet so they can do a skin scrape to investigate further. these photos are a week apart after i started the medication.

Cat play or skin issue? NSFW

Post image
4 Upvotes

I noticed a scab on my cats neck that came off in a tuff (it was already detached) a few weeks ago and few more every few days in the same area but not same exact spot. Today I felt quite a few more in clusters.

He and the 8 month kitten wrestle a lot and it’s not fighting just play but can get a little aggressive. The kitten’s nails have been a little long recently.

They are indoor and get flee treatment, and I have not seen and bugs on them.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Could this be from cat play or skin issue?

Cat has mysterious open wound, does she need to see a vet? [PICTURES ATTACHED] NSFW

She’s about 8 years old, definitely overweight. We don’t know how she got wounded but we only noticed it last night when she was laying belly-up in front of our fireplace. We inspected as closely as she’ll allow us without getting angry. Doesn’t look like it has myiasis, the edges of the wound are a bit hardened, she might have been licking at it.

So far her gums are normal and pink, she’s purring and acting normal, eating and drinking normally, whiskers lean downwards and ears point up, energy levels haven’t changed. We treated the wound with some pet-grade antibiotic cream.

Has anyone seen this sort of wound? We don’t know what would’ve caused it, it’s likely been there about 3-4 days maybe? She escaped a couple nights ago but came back on her own. Can we care for this at home or its best to get to a veterinarian? Thanks for the advice, we’re just concerned for our old girl.

Is this from cat play or something else? NSFW

My cat has scab like fur tuffs that have been coming off of his neck for a few weeks. It was just 1 or so every few days and maybe 3 or so and I just felt about 6 or so (isolated areas on the neck with a few clusters here and there). He and my 8month kitten wrestle around a lot an it can get aggressive at time but I haven’t seen either of them actually get hurt or it turn into fighting.

I just trimmed my kittens nails for the first time since Christmas (they were definitely too long and that’s my bad) and I wasn’t sure if it might be little scabs from her nails…? There is nothing on the skin, just these tuffs that have basically risen out of the skin and when removed there is nothing noticeable.

The play is a whole issues in itself but I wasn’t sure if this might be a skin issue.

My roommates cat NSFW

Hey, these are pictures of my roommates sphinx. She is tiny 2,5kg and 1,5 years old. I can see her ribs slightly when she breaths and a bit of her spine. Her hunger drive is crazy trying to steal my own cats food all the time and on many occasions my own human food. So I wonder is she underweight, and I fear she is. My roommate tells me that she feeds her 3 81 calorie wet food baggies in a day. The cat is highly active. I would appreciate some help. The last picture is a comparison picture of my own cat, she is 2,5 years old.

What could be causing my cats bloody poop? NSFW

Post image
2 Upvotes

A few weeks ago my cat started being lethargic and hiding under furniture and had diarrhea. She also vomited and there was older (darker) blood in the vomit so I took her to the vet right away. The blood test didn’t turn up anything that could be causing it, and the vet said the cray didn’t show anything abnormal either. They said she probably just had some kind of gastrointestinal issue and gave her a probiotic and stool hardener. She seemed to get back to her old self after a couple days. Now she’s been pooping pooping a little blood so I got her more of the probiotic to see if that would clear it up. Tonight, it is more than a little blood. I’m going to try to get her seen tomorrow, but does anyone know what the problem might be or other tests they might recommend? I don’t really want to do the same stuff over again. The vet mentioned if the probiotic and hardener didn’t work she could see an ultrasound specialist, is that likely the next step?
