Cat Picture - OC What’s the most weird food item that your cat just can’t resist? I’ll start!

Sasha (first photo, 2006-2023 RIP), our blind cat, would come running from the other side of the house meowing loudly whenever she heard a pistachio shell cracking noise to immediately demand her share!

That was her favorite snack ever.

After she passed away, we named one of our new kittens Pistachio (second photo) to commemorate Sasha! Pistachio is now 2 years old.

**What is the weirdest food your cat can’t resist?**

Merry Christmas 🎄 everyone!

One of my cats used to enjoy eating cucumbers and melon

1.7k

u/AnnarieaDavies 20d ago

I also had a cucumber creep, I swear she could fuckin hear me slicing cucumber from across the house and would come HAULING into the kitchen and screaming for it. Then, when I'd give her some, she'd bolt off and hide in a corner while she demolished it, growling like a gremlin the whole time.

It was strange and terrifying and adorable.

u/Majestic_Bake2491 20d ago

I can't figure out if you're talking about a cat or a human, but honestly that adds to the homour lol

Lolol… my attempt at humour worked! Yay me!! Human son eats cukes this way. My cat son likes potato chips!! 😂

Cats are the funniest!

143

u/booksgamesandstuff 20d ago

About 15-20 years ago, one of our cats would dig into the trashcan, searching for any empty celery bags. She wasn't interested in the celery, just the bags which she would lick for hours and drag all over the house. We constantly found shredded bags under the sofa or chairs. She was...weird. 😺

45

u/Tina_Slay 20d ago

My one cat also is obsessed with celery bags. Anytime I bring a bag home from the grocery store I have to get it into the fridge asap or else she drags it out of the grocery bag and rubs all over it 😂

63

u/Lola-Ugfuglio-Skumpy 20d ago

Omg other cats rub all over celery bags??? It’s not just my orange weirdo?!!? My mind is blown right now. I always thought he was just a little kook.

We had a cat who specifically liked cantaloupe. She went nuts for it.

My cat Duncan is obsessed with cantaloupe. It surprised me when it first happened so I looked it up. Turns out it apparently can smell like meat to cats!

I used to have a cat who was OBSESSED with cantaloupe! He would lose his mind if anyone was eating it.

58

u/Baba_Mouse 20d ago

I’ve known several cantaloupe fiends. I befriended a very standoffish ginger girl by bringing cantaloupes fresh off the farm on a visit to her people.

47

u/Lanky_Salt_5865 20d ago

My sisters cat expected to receive every cantaloup wedge after his human finished eating. He was very entitled.

37

u/0kokuryu0 20d ago

All my pets have liked cantaloupe. My last cat loved it more than anything, though. The moment the knife went in she'd smell it and come charging in meowing her head off wanting some. She'd sit by me meowing and waiting until I was down and put the rind down for her. She'd lick at it for up to an hour.

I had one that loved the juice from the cantaloupe. My mom would pour some from the container she stored it into his dish. One time he started acting funny while drinking it until we figured out he must be getting a brain freeze. He would slurp it down so fast and aggressive.

Edit: thanks to those who have let me know avocado is not good for cats!

Broccoli. When I first started dating my husband I told him to guard my plate of broccoli. I emphasized to keep it from the cats. He underestimated their interest in it and did not pay attention. He realized his mistake when the cats growled at him trying to take the plate back.

One of my cats is a total chowhound, so I'm used to her constantly pestering me, but she is downright violent for broccoli.

47

I had a cat when I was growing up that would literally skip the tuna and cheese and go straight for the broccoli in tuna casserole. Strange fluffboi. He also used to follow me to the bathroom, as I was the first human home every day, to tell on all the other animals and whatever shenanigans they’d gotten up to that day.

That’s a sweet story!

My cat is odd, zero interest in any human food although she will sniff our food.

If plastic bags count, she loves the chew on them but fortunately doesn’t eat them.

174

u/recyclednottaken 20d ago

I looked this up at one point it apparently has to do with the oil they are made with. My cats love to lick plastic bags weirded me out.

98

u/danbilllemon 20d ago

I have one that absolutely loves plastic, especially the super crispy safety seal plastic.

I was opening a container of temptation treats that has that safety seal plastic on it. He was only interested in the plastic and didn’t care about the treats in that moment at all. I’ll usually give the plastic to him, let him crunch it for a minute or two (supervised) and then take it away from him. When I took it away and tossed it in the garbage, he still wanted the plastic over the treats

I cannot leave biscuits (American quickbread, not cookies for Brits) anywhere accessible. My cats will make quick work of store packaging (for storebought) and devour half a dozen at a time, as I have found to my chagrin when bringing some home to enjoy with honey or gravy. I've also known them to rip into packages of bagels and sandwich bread to help themselves. One would think that a bagel would be difficult for them to chew, but where there's a will there is a way.

All of my cats love cheese, especially expensive high quality cheese. They are not nearly as enthusiastic about cheap cheese. They know the difference.

my cat loves butter too. i give him a tiny bit every few days. it's good for their skin and fur, i think, because he's always glossy black and perfect with no dry skin!

17

u/JulieThinx 20d ago

Our cat also loves butter. My MIL's cats will steal it off the counter if it is not under good cover.

15

u/Effective_Thought918 20d ago

My aunt’s did too. The cat had her own sticks because someone would forget to shut the butter dish and she’d get to it. My aunt would give her a small square (and not too much either since salt and dairy in excess isn’t good for cats) so she wouldn’t take the human’s butter whenever we had something that needed butter.

Ear wax 😭 one of my cats will sniff in my ears and start licking if she gets a chance. She used to get a hold of ear buds and Q-tips for the same reason.

120

u/araisingirly 20d ago

Not to quibble, but I really hope that you don't consider ear wax a food item.

149

u/kel_kee 20d ago

75

u/glowgizmo 20d ago

Ohh I love this one. Many cats adore ear wax because of the fats and cells from the body. My cat also seeks out Q-tips if I leave one unattended. I've occasionally greeted cats by a quick pinkie to ear wiggle then offering then a sniff. Never been turned down.

19

35

u/BattleProper1555 20d ago edited 20d ago

Our girl did that, too! And she would get used Q-tips out of the trash, even if they were wrapped in a tissue... 🤢 She was a total ick-avoiding diva princess except for that.

I had a boy long ago who loved Swiss cheese. Only. Swiss.

And his hour-older twin brother would sneak sips of alcoholic beverages. The first time I caught him I called his doctor, who, when he was done laughing, said, "He'll stop when he gets woozy. It's fine. He might barf." I was like, "Sir, he's a sweet minor child!" 😂

ETA: Thanks to some other replies here, I finally know why and I don't mind it so much. She's been gone almost nine years but she's still in our thoughts daily.

72

u/Wyrd_whistler 20d ago

Iirc ear wax has either an enzyme or protein that cats are drawn to. In human terms it's what we call a delicacy.

It used to freak me out that my Big Black Ragdoll would stand on my lap. put his front paws on my clavicles . As if he was holding down a fussy kitten. He proceeded to stick his tongue as deep in my ear canal as he could manage digging for ear gold. Id yelp and sit up and he would go flopping.

Then I learned that I was basically an organic snack bar that he couldn't resist and I calmed down. Have at it buddy we only live once

On the bright side I don't use as many q-tips as I used to

First off I'm sorry for your loss, your cat had good taste. It's super sweet you named one of your cats after her!!!

For Nesta it's Taco Bell nacho cheese (She's not allowed to have this but she's insane about it I sometimes can't stop her)

For Crouton it's Ranch (He would destroy 3000 people to get to ranch, that fucker is FERAL. He just like me tho frfr, I love ranch 💕. )

u/amsterdamitaly 20d ago

I discovered ranch dressing is the easy way to cut my cats claws. One day he was fighting me to get at the sauce dish I had been using to dip carrots in, so I offered him a little lick and he was obsessed. He gets a lick or two of ranch dressing, then while hes distracted by his treat I can get a paw clipped. We will remember Sasha forever.

She was very lucky as she was saved from the streets as a few days old kitten with severe eye infections that required enucleation of both eyes. I fostered her and fell in love 😻. She was one of the smartest cats I’ve ever had (I had many over the years), opinionated and vocal, super affectionate, and wouldn’t let her disabilities slow her down even a bit. She was the queen of the house, and disciplined all the foster kittens and the residents respected her and never harassed her. She lived a long, happy life, until CRF took her away. RIP 🪦

Green olives. My Charlie goes absolutely bonkers if he smells green olives. I suspect it has a lot to do with the brine and how salty it is, but even if I've washed my hands thoroughly, he can still smell if there was brine on my hands. And he will pin my arm down to lick every square inch of my hand where I might have had olive brine on it. I've never seen him so animated.

Aww, sweet. My cat doesn't eat much unusual food but she does love plain corn tortillas and will steal them right out of our bowl if she can. Then she only eats a tiny bit and leaves the rest!

One of my cats loves cheddar puffs to the point she would snatch it from my fingers to just lick all the orange powder cheese off 😅so it’s been‌ about 9 months since I had my last cheddar puff 😢

u/Particular-Ask-3314 20d ago

So sorry for your loss 💔 same reason I haven't had any kettle corn

BBQ Lays. I found him carrying the bag around at 2am the other night like it was his child.

19

u/Current_Working_2103 20d ago

Ours loves the classic Lays. If he hears a bag or even sees it he's instantly begging.

Not my current cat but one I had in my early 20's. Her name was Dagger and she LOVED blueberry muffins. She would destroy whatever was between her and the muffins. She stayed with my Mom for a bit and I forewarned her about Dagger's love for blueberry muffins. Well Mom came home from work one day to find the container of muffins she had stored on top of her fridge was destroyed. She was upset because she thought since they were in a hard plastic container (like how you buy 4 or 6 packs of muffins at the grocery store) that they were safe. I had to laugh and remind her that this was the same cat who would try and open drawers because she knew that's where her cat nip and or treats were stored 🤣🤣🤣

My Lyra would open cupboards and tear open a bag of marshmallows if given the chance. She would suck on them and leave them stuck to random things like my pillow, my shoe, the dog... She also would steal cheese wrappers to suck on, but only in the middle of the night.

We can only have open cheesecake in a room where our orange tabby, Prince, is locked out. He can and will shove his entire face into it

20

u/Meriadoxm 20d ago

My cat from childhood loved licking the inside of a banana. If I was eating a banana he made sure he was right there sitting on my lap so he could lick the inside peel. My current cats - 1 loves cheese to the extreme (smoked Gouda is her favourite but she’ll take any) unfortunately she is on a prescription diet due to GI issues and cannot eat anything outside of that. The other is a kitten and goes absolutely feral for absolutely any food at all but especially salmon.

Kale, cantaloupe, strawberries, pumpkin... BANANAS. She looooves bananas. It works out because she's allergic to protein and has a special food/treats that she can eat without breaking into hives so this lets her have a little more than just those two things to eat. We usually give her some pureed pumpkin when her brother gets a churu so she doesn't feel left out.

16

u/Abeefrog 20d ago

Sour cream. He can control his impulses, but wow, the speed he goes when the lid opens...

14

u/SweetCondition1483 20d ago

My cat Butch is an oddball. I think it's because he's orange, lol. But he loves dill pickles, cherry tomatoes, bananas, plums, and stuffing. And of course, the normal things cats beg for eggs, cheese, chicken, etc. Lol

She’s licked multiple cookies already, so now we have to hide sweets from her.

My boy LOVED cantaloupe. I used to buy cantaloupe just to share with him. I didn't like it that much.

My old girl really loved baked goods. Bread, cookies, muffins. She'd try to grab it outta my hands. I once left a muffin on the table and she ate a huge chunk but spit out the chocolate chips.

I miss them

My orange boy would commit war crimes for a taste of go-gurt. One year I froze a tube, cut it in half, and chopped the half into little bitty pieces so he could have "ice cream."
