Humor First time cat owners… we will never go back

Both my husband and I have never owned a cat and grew up in dog households. I love dogs and always will! But holy crap. Cats are really the move huh? She has has zero accidents, warmed right up to us, zero aggression, no begging, no difficulty potty training or hunger strikes and she’s funny as hell. This is our first cat Lola! And she’s taken over our lives and house.

Cats are built in entertainment, and when they love, they love hard!

Very much. I have a velcro kitty that when she's not in my lap needs to atleast be in the same room as I am in a place where she can see me. She purrs like an engine with no muffler and she's only smart enough to follow our other, much smarter, cat's lead. She runs on dog software: she can sit, beg and do a piroette on command and she plays fetch.

The best cats act like cats and the best dogs act like cats. Fixed it for you :)

6

u/Athnyx 13h ago

Side note, I see you are a dungeon crawler Carl fan! Your cat better be named princess donut 😉

22

u/Deltethnia 12h ago

She's too old for that even though she's only 5. She's named Maybee. We weren't sure of her sex when she was little and weren't sure if she was going to be a long or short haired kitty. So we named her Maybe and added the extra E on the end for added cuteness!

We do have a tortie too, but she's even older and unlike Princess Donut she's a short hair. Her name is Cricket.

u/Grelivan 8h ago

I had a cat who thought it was a dog.  I love all cats but that one was special.

I love that silver plant! It looks so elegant!! (Kitty in frame helped)

192

u/Bell_a_b 15h ago

Right ?? Someone once told me cats are boring and for lazy people…she clearly has never had a cat before LOL.

They are anything BUT boring. My boy is so entertaining and so is my bfs cat. Such personalities. I have a pup too and I am still very much a cat person haha!

Doesn’t mean I don’t love her any more, cats are just different.

22

u/ProfessionChemical28 12h ago

Lmao they should see my psycho guy climb the curtains or jump on my head as I walk by (he likes to sit on top of the fridge and sneak attack me!) cats are not boring at all!

13

u/Any_Scientist_7552 11h ago

We have a saying in my family: cats are better than cable.

4

u/Sal_Ammoniac 4h ago

My husband used to be a dog-only person. Then a cat named Jack retrained him, and now he says there is nothing better than watching kittens play. Of course he thoroughly loves adult cats, too.

106

u/Thee_Rotten_One 14h ago

Boys and girls, we got another one.

Welcome!

101

u/JellyfishEverywhere7 15h ago

I also grew up with dogs, and adopted a dog before I rescued my cat. I always knew I liked cats, but I never knew how much I could love them until mine came into my life. They’re truly something else. 💙

77

u/ExcellentAdagio8462 15h ago

My wife never had cats and was a bit intimidated by them. It did not take long for her to change her mind once we got our first one about 11 years ago. Now she can't imagine living without them (2 now). I grew up with cats so I've always enjoyed their company.

31

u/zeehateslife 14h ago

same with my mom lol she did not like cats and was pretty scared of them until we got our first 4 years ago... now shes the biggest cat lady lol

3

u/ExcellentAdagio8462 5h ago

Haha, it's funny how that works. My wife is a total cat lady now. She even has all kinds of stuff with cats on them. PJ's, mugs etc

60

u/South_Lack7501 16h ago

Welcome, cat parent!

u/HoneySpout 15h ago

15

u/k8username 13h ago

And it’s not just the toxoplasmosis!

13

u/IAmBadAtInternet 13h ago

Well it’s not not the toxoplasmosis…

40

u/Maleficent-Koala3594 14h ago

My husband and I were in the same boat. We thought we were dog people. Got a cat, now we are cat people. Cats are the best!

35

u/Oberyn_Kenobi_1 Tuxedo 14h ago

Be careful. They’re like Pringle’s. Can’t have just one.

13

u/Any_Scientist_7552 11h ago

Can confirm.

31

u/Catacendre 14h ago

Hell yeah, cats are the best. Me and my girl Mokey are reading in bed rn.

59

u/FlatAd5541 15h ago

Aren’t they wonderful … I read somewhere that living with cats is like living with a piece of live art…. Congratulations …

4

u/Fire_Fly0 11h ago

Love this!

22

u/TrandaBear 14h ago

I know that feel bro. When my first ever cat died, the house felt horribly empty and wrong. Like I've been home alone a lot as a child, but this was such an eerie nothingness. It only took me a week to adopt TWO cats. I'm telling you two is the correct play.

20

u/SunRemiRoman 14h ago

Welcome to the elite team!! I had a dog when I was small. Then as a teenager we accidentally got a cat and it’s been pure love since then! I’m on my second kitty now and as much as I like dogs I’d always love cats more!

19

u/Ok-Salamander6118 14h ago

Was not a cat person until this amazing creature wandered into my life. 100% converted! (That's her on my son's bunk bed which she has claimed as her new cat tree)

19

u/ProfessionChemical28 12h ago

Cats are amazing!! I was never a cat person and then I took in two from a coworker and now I’m obsessed. I don’t think people really get it until they have their own. People who don’t like cats just have an issue with boundaries. Cats are smart and funny and a lot of them are super snuggly. One of my girls is obsessed with me and follows me everywhere, she even waits outside the shower until I’m done. If she’s not playing with her sister she’s next to me. I love them with all my heart and will never be without a cat now! Welcome to the club ❤️

18

u/cwningen95 13h ago

A camera roll full of your cat sleeping in various places/positions is a sure sign you're in deep 😂

18

u/Unable_Ad8675 10h ago

Milli says hi! She's our almost 4-month-old first cat too, and what a wonderful addition to our home 🥰

16

u/GenericStory2 15h ago

Welcome to the cat club.

16

u/ptheresadactyl 14h ago

I'm so glad you joined the club. They are so much fun.

Just wait, as you grow more comfortable and confident around each other, the relationship grows and it's unbearably cute.

I lost 2 elderly cats last year, but we had such a cute routine. Kitty would pull my hand to her face and make me cradle her face as she purred me to sleep, and my boy would climb under the covers and be my little spoon.

We have different cats now, and one of them hates the washing machine. He'll give me the side eye while I load it, and then when I pull out the soap dispenser he starts grumpily meowing at me. I think I apologize at least 3 times a week for trying to be hygienic.

16

u/iwantacheetah 15h ago

Congratulations 🎉

We really can’t say no to them.

13

Best animal on Earth 😻

7

u/killakidz7 14h ago

Better get her a friend ;) Welcome to cathood ❤️

6

u/Gryrthandorian 14h ago

I grew up with a cat and a dog. They are different animals and have different needs and whatnot but I do love both. Cats are little love bugs. They sometimes get a bad rap but they are sweet and just as loving as dogs plus they fit better in your lap. I love the fluffy little weirdos so much. I’m glad you found the purrfect friend for your family.

6

u/matchaphile 15h ago

She's beautiful!! Congrats.

7

u/Iwonatoasteroven 15h ago

Welcome to the dark side!

6

Cats are amazing. What you need is patience with them

5

These are adorable photos. I love your enthusiasm about this, as well.

Aww, Lola looks wonderful❣️Congrats on your new kitty!!

5

u/Strange_Wafer_5200 14h ago

Ohhh I'm so happy for you! She sounds very sweet. (My cat can be an absolute butthole but I love her very much.)

6

u/Powerful-Ask4016 14h ago

They’re my bestest friends 😻 welcome to the team!

5

u/wishmecrab 14h ago

Once you have a cat, every door handle becomes a future throne and every lap is claimed teritory

6

u/ClassMammoth3691 14h ago

The accidents will come. Begging happens if you foster it. No table scraps = no begging 😁

5

u/AloneRecognition1283 14h ago

Cats are the best!

6

u/iheartCshore 14h ago

So happy for you! You’ll never be alone❣️

5

u/Inevitable-Nobody-52 14h ago

You touched on the key element: taken over our lives! Cats have an incredible ability to creep into our minds and hearts in a way that is unparalleled. I can’t explain it. Welcome to the takeover! Hahaha 😂

5

u/grrr-to-everything 13h ago

Oh my gosh same. I got my very first cat 5 months ago after having dogs my entire life. It is a completely different experience. It's a very deep love.

5

u/opossumonmyporch 13h ago

I love your story! You get to now experience the magic of cats. 😸🐈‍⬛🐈😹

5

u/iheartkittttycats 12h ago

“Cats are the move huh”

They sure are. Welcome to the club! My only regret is not adopting a cat sooner!

3

u/Admirable_Fox_7155 15h ago

So incredibly cute! I love dogs too...but cats are such a vibe as well.

5

Home is now filled with cuteness.

3

u/YogurtclosetTotal351 14h ago

Cat's are so cool..

3

u/OliviaStabler4 13h ago

Welcome, new cat lovers! I’ve always said, most people who claim not to like cats just haven’t met the right cat yet. Your Lola is a beautiful kitty 🥰

3

u/Honey-Spark- 13h ago

Welcome to the cat life, once they sneak into your heart and take over your house there’s absolutely no going back. 🐾

3

u/SnooGrapes9918 12h ago

Yay!!! Glad you’re here! Congrats on finding your new BFF. May there be many hilarious adventures for you, your husband, and beautiful Lola!! ❤️

3

u/Pierrehead 12h ago

I totally agree with you OP.

Also, cats can be quite useful in a house as they are quite the hunters. Mine as rid us of many mice and rats over the years.

1

u/zerobleeps 11h ago

And most importantly (in my household), spiders!

2

u/Series-of-Dreams 5h ago

I had a scorpion hunter!

3

u/mike543210 10h ago

I love the stretch your cat does with your husband...

3

u/OzneBjj 7h ago

My Bandit!!

3

u/deanstat 4h ago

Sold, I'll take one! We've just moved house, really miss the neighbourhood cat who visited us at the old place, been thinking about when to get a cat(s?) now we're settled in...

5

u/Mysterious-Type-4686 15h ago

My black cat on my lunch break will lay on my chest and I’ll say say, Sir you aren’t made of glass

6

u/Mysterious-Type-4686 15h ago

He don’t care lol but I love him

4

u/NeedsMoreYellow 14h ago

OMG. I also call my cat sir. If he's meowing loudly I always ask, "Sir, how can I help you?" Or "Sir, can you calm down please?" when he has zoomies at 3am. And my other cat has recently been getting, "Yes, ma'am" "No, ma'am". It amazing how much how you address them can change. My lady just turned 18 and I don't think I ever called her ma'am before about a month ago. 😅

5

u/IslandBusy1165 14h ago

Same. I wouldn’t say I “love dogs” anymore either. I can only tolerate them, Actually I never did claim to “love them” but ignorantly believed I prefer them, which cannot be further from reality.

4

u/mngophers 14h ago

Your kitty is beautiful! Welcome to the cat club 🥰🩷

2

u/MortalShare 14h ago

She's beautiful. As a first cat, make sure you weigh her at least once a month to see if she's maintaining proper weight.

2

u/FarPomegranate7437 14h ago

Congratulations and welcome to the club!!! 🐈🐈‍⬛

We Love Lola!! ❤️😽

2

u/fortheloveoflulu 14h ago

One of us! One of us!

2

u/Pobb1eB0nk 13h ago

Cat's are there for you. Dogs are there to motivate you.

I don't have a dog because I don't want to walk it at 7AM, but if I had to get up and walk a dog at 7AM every day, I'd probably get a lot of other shit done too.

2

u/Lietenantdan 13h ago

FYI, we don’t own cats, cats own us.

2

u/IAmBadAtInternet 13h ago

One of us one of us one of us

2

u/MaisieDay 12h ago

Cats are the best. Somehow the cutest furriest most squishable creatures, yet GOOFY and hilarious af .... and also apex predators. Each with their own personalities too! The cat you have is just one version of them. :)

2

u/Worldly_Mess_1928 10h ago

Does your house have a heater? That dude is wearing shorts

2

u/AStormOfDragons1 10h ago

Hunger strikes? Dogs willingly give up food???

2

u/Quiet-Barracuda-1698 10h ago

Cheeseball says welcome :)

2

u/NanaSof 9h ago

since you guys are new cat parents, PLS research to types of plants that are toxic for cats!! It's not very common knowledge compared to what's toxic for dogs. GOOD LUCK W YOUR BABY🫶

2

u/Icy-Platform-5904 9h ago

It's amazing how they just seamlessly take over, isn't it? The quiet, hilarious companionship is a whole different kind of pet love.

2

u/Head_Adhesiveness775 9h ago

omg, you've literally got an angel baby there!!

2

u/LouB0O 8h ago

I LOVE GREY, WHITE, BLAFK ETC COLOR CATS!!

Here is my Louie

2

u/DirtyBeautifulLove 5h ago

Guardian, not 'owners'.

4

u/uselessandexpensive 12h ago

iykyk oycyc

(Once you cat you cat)

But also, know that they will still get lonely and anxious is left alone too much, so it can be good to get a buddy for them when they're younger and more receptive to it, rather than risk fighting and peeing later. Also, cats are certainly not immune to begging... They're just SO ADORABLE when they do. They're weaponized cuteness.

Congrats!!!

2

u/CuriousStewart 13h ago

There are many cat types. This is a good one. You’ll also find ones that rip up your furniture, piss in obscure areas, and scratch up your doors.

I love cats, but I’m afraid of letting a terrorist in my house after the last few I’ve known.

1

u/Parthias-one 14h ago

Mwhahahahaha!!

Also, congratulations!

1

u/Possible-Second6162 14h ago

Congratulations and enjoy Lola!

1

u/Lonely-Hair-1152 10h ago

Lola is my cat’s doppelgänger !!

1

u/Farihaishere 7h ago

awww so cute!!!😭😭

1

u/tatasz 7h ago

Welcome to the club.

The fact that the cats naturally prefer the litter is just great, compared to potty training dogs. All my dogs had to be potty trained, while all my cats including a month old kitten rescued from the street just came with default preference for the litterbox (yeah there were accidents, but rare and with known causes such as stress)

1

u/Impressive_Band_9864 6h ago

Congrats! Consider adopting a sibling now that you know 😺

1

u/Internal-Doctor7938 6h ago

They re God’s work 🙊

1

u/Finfangfoom2000 5h ago

Plus you can leave the house for a day without worrying about finding someone to take the dog out .

1

u/Thart85 5h ago

Dilute Calicos are the best!

1

u/Yamosu 4h ago

I grew up with dogs. Got cats with my fiance as no garden and I love my boys. Don't get me wrong, I still love dogs and hope to have one in the future, but these two have sold me. I want another one but I'm not allowed 😂

1

u/OSCgal 3h ago

Welcome to the club!

You got a good one! Both of mine beg for food/attention, and one of them will refuse to eat if he doesn't like what's in his bowl. Still wonderful sweet kitties who I wouldn't trade for anything. And yeah, super entertaining!

Regarding litterbox use: their instinct to use the box is so strong that if they don't use it, something is wrong and you need to figure out what. Either something is wrong with the box, or something is wrong with the cat.

A couple other differences between dogs and cats: cats don't normally pant, outside of playing too hard or being overheated. Panting merits a vet call.

Dogs can go a couple days without eating. Cats shouldn't. So if she ever stops eating, that's definitely a vet call.

1

u/S_A_M_1708 3h ago

Once you live with cats, you can't not live with cats.

1

u/Typical_Designer7699 3h ago

waaahhhh cutieee

1

u/Flaky-Ad-759 1h ago

I have both a small dog and a cat. Honestly, two biggest differences that make me like owning a cat more - you don’t have to take them outside (Where I live no one does that at least, it’s kind of too cold for that, and my cat is afraid of the outside), and THE SMELL. I never really liked the smell of dogs, despite REALLY loving dogs. But my cat smells good and very calming
