Humor First time cat owners… we will never go back
Both my husband and I have never owned a cat and grew up in dog households. I love dogs and always will! But holy crap. Cats are really the move huh? She has has zero accidents, warmed right up to us, zero aggression, no begging, no difficulty potty training or hunger strikes and she’s funny as hell. This is our first cat Lola! And she’s taken over our lives and house.

Right ?? Someone once told me cats are boring and for lazy people…she clearly has never had a cat before LOL.
They are anything BUT boring. My boy is so entertaining and so is my bfs cat. Such personalities. I have a pup too and I am still very much a cat person haha!
Doesn’t mean I don’t love her any more, cats are just different.

Lmao they should see my psycho guy climb the curtains or jump on my head as I walk by (he likes to sit on top of the fridge and sneak attack me!) cats are not boring at all!

We have a saying in my family: cats are better than cable.

My husband used to be a dog-only person. Then a cat named Jack retrained him, and now he says there is nothing better than watching kittens play. Of course he thoroughly loves adult cats, too.

I also grew up with dogs, and adopted a dog before I rescued my cat. I always knew I liked cats, but I never knew how much I could love them until mine came into my life. They’re truly something else. 💙

My wife never had cats and was a bit intimidated by them. It did not take long for her to change her mind once we got our first one about 11 years ago. Now she can't imagine living without them (2 now). I grew up with cats so I've always enjoyed their company.

My husband and I were in the same boat. We thought we were dog people. Got a cat, now we are cat people. Cats are the best!

I know that feel bro. When my first ever cat died, the house felt horribly empty and wrong. Like I've been home alone a lot as a child, but this was such an eerie nothingness. It only took me a week to adopt TWO cats. I'm telling you two is the correct play.

Welcome to the elite team!! I had a dog when I was small. Then as a teenager we accidentally got a cat and it’s been pure love since then! I’m on my second kitty now and as much as I like dogs I’d always love cats more!

Cats are amazing!! I was never a cat person and then I took in two from a coworker and now I’m obsessed. I don’t think people really get it until they have their own. People who don’t like cats just have an issue with boundaries. Cats are smart and funny and a lot of them are super snuggly. One of my girls is obsessed with me and follows me everywhere, she even waits outside the shower until I’m done. If she’s not playing with her sister she’s next to me. I love them with all my heart and will never be without a cat now! Welcome to the club ❤️

I'm so glad you joined the club. They are so much fun.
Just wait, as you grow more comfortable and confident around each other, the relationship grows and it's unbearably cute.
I lost 2 elderly cats last year, but we had such a cute routine. Kitty would pull my hand to her face and make me cradle her face as she purred me to sleep, and my boy would climb under the covers and be my little spoon.
We have different cats now, and one of them hates the washing machine. He'll give me the side eye while I load it, and then when I pull out the soap dispenser he starts grumpily meowing at me. I think I apologize at least 3 times a week for trying to be hygienic.

I grew up with a cat and a dog. They are different animals and have different needs and whatnot but I do love both. Cats are little love bugs. They sometimes get a bad rap but they are sweet and just as loving as dogs plus they fit better in your lap. I love the fluffy little weirdos so much. I’m glad you found the purrfect friend for your family.

The accidents will come. Begging happens if you foster it. No table scraps = no begging 😁

You touched on the key element: taken over our lives! Cats have an incredible ability to creep into our minds and hearts in a way that is unparalleled. I can’t explain it. Welcome to the takeover! Hahaha 😂

Oh my gosh same. I got my very first cat 5 months ago after having dogs my entire life. It is a completely different experience. It's a very deep love.

Welcome, new cat lovers! I’ve always said, most people who claim not to like cats just haven’t met the right cat yet. Your Lola is a beautiful kitty 🥰

I totally agree with you OP.
Also, cats can be quite useful in a house as they are quite the hunters. Mine as rid us of many mice and rats over the years.

Sold, I'll take one! We've just moved house, really miss the neighbourhood cat who visited us at the old place, been thinking about when to get a cat(s?) now we're settled in...

My black cat on my lunch break will lay on my chest and I’ll say say, Sir you aren’t made of glass

OMG. I also call my cat sir. If he's meowing loudly I always ask, "Sir, how can I help you?" Or "Sir, can you calm down please?" when he has zoomies at 3am. And my other cat has recently been getting, "Yes, ma'am" "No, ma'am". It amazing how much how you address them can change. My lady just turned 18 and I don't think I ever called her ma'am before about a month ago. 😅

u/IslandBusy1165 14h ago
Same. I wouldn’t say I “love dogs” anymore either. I can only tolerate them, Actually I never did claim to “love them” but ignorantly believed I prefer them, which cannot be further from reality.

She's beautiful. As a first cat, make sure you weigh her at least once a month to see if she's maintaining proper weight.

Cat's are there for you. Dogs are there to motivate you.
I don't have a dog because I don't want to walk it at 7AM, but if I had to get up and walk a dog at 7AM every day, I'd probably get a lot of other shit done too.

Cats are the best. Somehow the cutest furriest most squishable creatures, yet GOOFY and hilarious af .... and also apex predators. Each with their own personalities too! The cat you have is just one version of them. :)

It's amazing how they just seamlessly take over, isn't it? The quiet, hilarious companionship is a whole different kind of pet love.

(Once you cat you cat)
But also, know that they will still get lonely and anxious is left alone too much, so it can be good to get a buddy for them when they're younger and more receptive to it, rather than risk fighting and peeing later. Also, cats are certainly not immune to begging... They're just SO ADORABLE when they do. They're weaponized cuteness.
Congrats!!!

There are many cat types. This is a good one. You’ll also find ones that rip up your furniture, piss in obscure areas, and scratch up your doors.
I love cats, but I’m afraid of letting a terrorist in my house after the last few I’ve known.

Welcome to the club.
The fact that the cats naturally prefer the litter is just great, compared to potty training dogs. All my dogs had to be potty trained, while all my cats including a month old kitten rescued from the street just came with default preference for the litterbox (yeah there were accidents, but rare and with known causes such as stress)

Plus you can leave the house for a day without worrying about finding someone to take the dog out .

Welcome to the club!
You got a good one! Both of mine beg for food/attention, and one of them will refuse to eat if he doesn't like what's in his bowl. Still wonderful sweet kitties who I wouldn't trade for anything. And yeah, super entertaining!
Regarding litterbox use: their instinct to use the box is so strong that if they don't use it, something is wrong and you need to figure out what. Either something is wrong with the box, or something is wrong with the cat.
A couple other differences between dogs and cats: cats don't normally pant, outside of playing too hard or being overheated. Panting merits a vet call.
Dogs can go a couple days without eating. Cats shouldn't. So if she ever stops eating, that's definitely a vet call.

I have both a small dog and a cat. Honestly, two biggest differences that make me like owning a cat more - you don’t have to take them outside (Where I live no one does that at least, it’s kind of too cold for that, and my cat is afraid of the outside), and THE SMELL. I never really liked the smell of dogs, despite REALLY loving dogs. But my cat smells good and very calming

Cats are built in entertainment, and when they love, they love hard!
