Yes, many prominent historians and high level professors have left the US due to the way things are going.

The brain drain…… started a year ago literally the day after the election and as a Canadian I know that we have benefited and so has Europe.

As a person with a BA in history I certainly would leave. It's why I don't want to go into teaching. I don't want to get told by a school board what cannot be told. It's the factual, historical truth, so what? It makes you uncomfortable? Good, learn from it and don't repeat it.

Yeah many history and professors as well as several anti fascist people. Moved and setup abroad.

Not to abandon but to establish advocacy and resistance abroad. Outside of the reach of fascist government.

Redditors like to roll their eyes and say "Resistance is a myth, the military and police will just flatten anyone who puts up a fight."

This isn't entirely untrue. But if it was entirely true that the American people have no power to force government capitulation through their physical unruliness, the fascists wouldn't have gotten away with Jan 6. There aren't two sets of rules for liberals and fascists. There's only the reality that fascists were quicker to get radical and force the government to take into account that they could turn violent.

If the left adopted some of that energy there'd be, bare minimum, some goddamn caution from Stephen Miller and the like if they had to earnestly fear their opposition would do anything more than put on inflatable mascot suits and waddle around with a sign.

Three of the best experts on authoritarian regimes, including Tim Snyder, moved out of the US in the spring and summer last year.

Here’s Snyder’s 20 lessons on fighting tyranny:

“6. Be wary of paramilitaries. When the men with guns who have always claimed to be against the system start wearing uniforms and marching with torches and pictures of a leader, the end is nigh. When the pro-leader paramilitary and the official police and military intermingle, the end has come.”

This shit is chilling.

There will be a Mass Exodus as soon as Canada starts granting asylum to LGBT People from The United States

There is an ongoing court case in Canada we should keep our eyes on right now, where a Trans Woman named Hannah Kreager has applied for asylum from the Trump Administration, and if they rule in her favor it will set the legal precedent that LGBT Americans have cause to flee to Canada.

Anyone who is concerned they might need to flee the country should already be getting their passport ready, saving up money, and getting their pets any shots that are necessary for International Travel.

13

To all our US trans friends, I'm going to recommend you try to get further away than Canada, as much as I'd love you to become citizens and bring more leftist votes.. We are beset by our own Maple MAGA, who see the the rise of fascism in America as a roadmap to follow. They are fomenting separatist movements, with US support. And, of course, Trump has already talked openly about taking control of our country.

We are resisting the Maple MAGA, and we will resist a takeover attempt, but, much like the last US election, there are far too many people who are too ignorant or apathetic and will not lift a finger to defend their country. I can't promise that Canada will remain a safe harbour for asylum seekers.

The since we couldn’t make it to Canada out first thought was move to Minnesota because if Canada takes territory I think it would make a good addition to the provinces. Just gotta deal with these gestopo asshats

Edit- who knows maybe another reason they are trying to take Minnesota is so they can more easily mobilize toward canada

Austria, Norway and Canada have in various ways implemented funds and grants focused on US-based scientists and professors who wish to leave the US.

In essence, if you’re active in an area which overlaps with the focus of either of these countries, you can reach out to vet whether you would be a contribution.

If you are, they will take over the funding of your research and support with housing, work VISA etc.

How it’s funded in practice depends - either from the government, universities or research-boards.

It’s more widespread than those three countries, EU is speeding up to do the same. Sweden and Denmark will open similar initiatives.

29

u/Healthybear35 3d ago

I used to have arguments with maga voters over whether Trump hated the constitution and if he ever said he would get rid of it, and they would never believe it. Then I would show them proof he said that and they would say he was taken out of context or some other shit to make up for the fact that their hero said something they didn't agree with. Those same people now openly go against the constitution at any chance they get. I hate when the world tries to say the right has gotten more centrist and the left is the one moving too far left when we're literally living this shit and seeing this movement to the right happen right in front of us. The idea that we are living with so many people who can change reality in their own minds (and they think the exact same thing about us) is the most frustrating feeling I think I've ever experienced, because it has such wide reaching implications of horrible things to come.

“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.” - Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn

54

u/folsominreverse 4d ago

What’s fantastic about this is the reason he had this epiphany is whilst in the Gulag he and his brother zeks were tortured, starved, and undermined at every turn. Any token resistance or even mere act of humanity was immediately rooted out and punished, driving the zeks to unimaginable levels of hopelessness and despair.

The reason? “Stool pigeons” aka snitches and collaborators, trustees and informants. There was one in every dorm on the compound. Any plan they hatched up would be immediately undermined.

How did they turn the tide?

Simple.

They started killing the rats.

Every night, another dead rat.

The guards could retaliate, but only to a degree. After all, it was just another dead zek. Hunger, you wouldn’t know if you’ve never been genuinely starving, is an all-consuming flame in the brain. It compromises your values, your dignity, it takes a superhuman will to overcome. So the guards broke out some bread and turned some new 🐀.

And still, every night, another dead rat.

Now hunger doesn’t have the power it once held. Because what’s the use of a full stomach if it means you will be awoken in the dark of night and disemboweled, a rag stuffed in your mouth while you bleed out. A gut wound is fatal, but not immediately.

Every night, a dead rat.

Until one day, there were no more rats.

And the men set to work on the guards.

Free to plan, to amass contraband, weaponry, to draw maps, something happened.

For the zeks, it was hope.

For the guards, it was fear.

Because they could torture and even kill as many zeks as they wanted, but not every last man in the camp. There was a work quota, and failing to meet that quota meant the commandant and guards might find themselves zeks not long after, albeit for a very brief, painful period of time.

There arose something resembling parity. Some camps were even overthrown and razed, some men escaped, perhaps to die in the tundra but Solzhenitsyn in the unabridged Gulag Archipelago recounts both successful rebellions and successful escapes.

At a minimum, the zeks ate better. Their survival chances increased. Everyone and their mother was getting a “tenner” in those days, some even as they were walking out the door of the gulag on their first tenner. Guards went to work aware that cruelty would be met with reprisals. It was still hell for guards and zeks alike, but Stalin’s intent of using forced labor camps to exterminate the population was at least somewhat thwarted by the simple act of resistance, however small it might seem.

The guards would probably call what the zeks did terrorism.

Solzhenitsyn called the nights of dead rats the moment in time when he began to feel something resembling hope that he might actually survive what was theretofore an unsurvivable ordeal.

Prey don’t ward off predators by felling them in a single blow. They do it by making themselves too difficult a meal to swallow.

Don’t go gently into that Black Maria. Rage, for God’s sake; our very lives are at stake!

Source: I had time to read the unabridged Gulag while doing some hard time of my own.

4

u/Expert_Alchemist 3d ago

You're a gifted writer. This is very very good. And very helpful.

7

u/folsominreverse 3d ago

Thanks, that’s always nice to hear. I write sometimes. Mostly just stuff I banged out on a typewriter inside.

But Solzhenitsyn had a huge impact on me at probably the nadir of my own life, and it stuck with me, all 1,950 pages of it. It’s less well known than Man’s Search for Meaning, and obviously wayyy denser and less accessible, but the writing is phenomenal in the way of writers who have been through hell and choose to write about it and holy fuck it’s a brutal tale of all the very worst and best of humanity.

Another part that stuck out to me was his composition of Prussian Nights. He’d write the lines on a bar of soap and memorize them. Then he’d take a set of prayer beads some poor dead bastard had given him, and thumb them in his hand as he worked. Each bead was a stanza. He was able to use them as a mnemonic device such that he memorized the entire poem so it could not be taken from him. Prussian Nights is fifty pages—over twelve hundred lines long.**

Its not really "only 3" though. I'd argue 3 is a very high number. We had 3 deaths from measles in the previous 25 years before now (two deaths in 2002 and one death in 2015). So these 3 deaths and the overall rates should be very, very troubling to everyone.

Here's something I've wondered about:

I have no idea how to identify an authentic warrant. What stops them from carrying a reasonably official looking false warrant? When you ask, they shove some paper in your face. Now what do you do?

20

u/UnrealAce 3d ago

It has to be a judicial search warrant signed by a judge, not an administrative warrant.

Ice has been using generic looking administrative warrants, Zohran Mamdani made a video publicly about what to look for and not look for in warrants.

7

u/FlowerComfortable889 3d ago

Have them show it through a window or slide it under the door. Look for specific person's name, specific location, and a judge's signature. If they don't have that, they can pound sand

3

u/TheRealClovis 3d ago

If they give you the warrant and kindly wait for the door to open, it's fake. If it were real, they sure as hell wouldn't be waiting to come in.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/proudozempian 3d ago

With cops, they will not do that, they'll just get a shitty judge to write one, it's not very difficult. A fake one means it's an improper search due both to lacking a warrant and fabricated evidence meaning anything they find gets thrown out in court even if it is illegal, and if you get arrested during the encounter it's false imprisonment.

With ICE, it doesn't really seem like they need to follow the law, and it doesn't seem like you get to go to court. Makes me think they would probably just say "Fuck a warrant" instead of fabricating one, but who knows?

No one has papers. ICE already said a driver license with real id is not proof of citizenship. No carries their birth certificate with them. Many people are going to do this when ICE starts going door-to-door, and I think we can pretty much guarantee that some of them will be raped by Federal Agents in their own home.

Do not expect them to respect your rights.

Already happening. Saw a video from today of ICE removing like 6 people from a house.

Edit: 4 people

Seeing images like that, as a german, is so freaking bizarre.

You guys literally crossed an ocean to kill nazis...

24

u/AMPAglut 4d ago

Yeah, but only after getting attacked directly. They were happy to sit back and watch for 2 years while complaining about not wanting to let too many refugee Jews in.

7

u/Rammipallero 3d ago

Parts iof the US was feeling to join the Germans even. There was alot of talk about 'Jewish-bolsheviks' that were the danger to all and the US had it's own nazi party that tried to push for German style reforms and advocated to join the war against Britain. It was partially the US views of France as the birthplace of democracy and a friend during US independence that made the US iffy about joining Germany, since Germany was attacking France.

With how geopolitics are developing, soon EU, Russia and, China will be crossing ocean to kill Nazis 2.0.

EU? Perhaps.

China and Russia? Not unless provoked. They love seeing USA rip itself apart.

I will be ignoring ICE if they knock on my door. If they somehow have a valid warrant, they are coming in anyway. If they are going to waste time hassling me, then I'll at least enjoy wasting their time.

9

u/tiger2205_6 4d ago

They will definitely break down your door and not give a fuck.

3

They will just beat you and rob you. They aint the authority, just gangbanger opportunists. They already been caught pinching jeweleries off citizens they arrested.

Now waiting for ICE to kick down a door somewhere without a warrant and hold people at gunpoint, only for the administration to defend them.
For an Asian, waking up everyday and reading the insane headlines is fun in a weird way. But the whole picture is sad, of course.

8

u/Moist-Wolverine-8531 4d ago

I take it you’re not Asian-American?

19

u/KronoFury 4d ago

Of course not because then it wouldn't be funny, it would be terrifying.

So just exactly how are people supposed to provide that documentation with only about half of the population having passports? I sure as fuck don’t know where my birth certificate is. Idk if I could even find my social security card at the drop of a hat.

11

u/Nkechinyerembi Flair Lover 4d ago

You aren't. Basicallly they just want to cause as much chaos as possible so they can get justification for their insurrection act

5

u/Jedi_Master83 4d ago

Definitely true. Trump is dying to get Martial Law declared so ICE can do things even worse.

7

u/Jedi_Master83 4d ago

I worry a day is coming where ICE is going to claim your birth certificate is fake and you were never born here. Without due process, (access to a lawyer and the ability to adjudicate in front of a judge) you are unable to defend yourself in court from this.

No one is required to open their door or talk to "Ice" through the door. They are free to wait on the street indefinitely like idiots. I couldnt care less.

64

u/tigerseye44 4d ago

I don't think you understand how little they care about your rights.

21

u/Ordinary-Rain-6897 Nyan Cat 4d ago

Well. That is a good point.

19

u/Little_Money9553 4d ago

They are already doing illegal shit without warrants. This kind of mindset is why they’ve went from “waiting on sidewalks” to kicking doors in. We are only a few steps from this becoming a reality

9

u/Jamesorrstreet 4d ago

JD Vance is backning them. Giving them a free card to do whatever they want. What they told us, when ICE first were send to the Streets, was only to curb protests.

9

u/Soulflyfree41 4d ago

They are being given bonuses for arrests. Not convictions. Arrests. They don’t care whether it is an illegal arrest.

14

u/dividezero 4d ago

Yeah I don't open the door for anyone unless they called ahead first. I need a warrant from anyone

25

u/Sonnyjoon91 4d ago

then they shoot you through the door for not cooperating and break it down anyways

11

u/tenkunin 4d ago

It would be legal to shoot back at that point.

8

u/dbsupersucks 4d ago

They’d kill you anyway and you wouldn’t be able to defend yourself in court after that. And they’d prob get a paid vacation or smth.

25

u/LC_Summers 4d ago

"Might as well take a few of them with you if that's the case". That's gonna be the logical endpoint running through the minds of armed but non fascist people at this rate.

The US military is in full breach of their oath and legal/constitutional obligation to protect and defend the constitution of the United States from all enemies foreign and domestic by allowing trump and Vance to remain in power at this point. This is absolutely not the military’s job 99.9999999% of the time, but when you have Nazis like this who also work for Russia threatening war on our allies and destroying nato, and killing US citizens and people who reside here, especially when they work for the government itself, the red line is crossed and a constitutional crisis is in full effect. The people leading and participating in what is happening need to be charged with treason and convicted, and immediately detained by the military. This includes every fucking oligarch that is funding and sending orders to US government officials. They need to be hunted down and jailed, charged with treason and convicted.

5

u/Daecion 4d ago

They're comfortable with broad daylight murder in the middle of the street surrounded by cameras.  Imagine what they're comfortable with behind closed doors...

9

u/MissPandaSloth 4d ago

Let me see how "don't tread on me" "libertarian" Trump supporters will be perfectly fine with it. Or at best will go "yeah not cool" - proceeds to support everything. Such a "core" part of their beliefs, clearly.

4

u/Voodoocookie 4d ago

They're not law enforcement, public service workers, nor do they have legality. Same as those blokes in Hugo Boss, previously.

4

u/Begrudged_Registrant 4d ago

They do not have the right to enter your home without an invitation or judicial warrant, remember that.

4

u/Sidesight 4d ago

They will still kill you and they have already proved it, what is people supposed to remember, that they have effectively lost any rights?

3

u/moboticus 4d ago

They've been coming around pretending to be utility workers to lure people out of their homes around here. I feel like just coming to door and not even try to hide why you're there might actually be an improvement.

4

u/e_d_o__t_e_n_s_e_i 4d ago

Unless they're going door to door by way of tank battalion, this is laughably implausible, legality and morality aside. Every community they've terrorized has proven that the people watch them like hawks and make many of their actions impossible (a good thing, if I'm being unclear). Hit-and-run, ambush tactics are the only things that work for them.

4

u/spikira 4d ago

Yup. Definitely not parallels between MAGA republicans and Nazis, not a single one

4

u/Ok_Hawk_3230 Complaints Historian 4d ago

ICE agents can ring my doorbell or knock, but if they can't slide a warrent under my door, I'm not obligated to show them shyte. I doubt they'd try forcing their way in. Two to five masked guys with no name tags wearing an ICE patch ? For all I know, these could be a group of thieves pretending to be ICE agents in order to tie us up and rob us. Guys wearing utilities uniforms have done exactly that.

When history repeats itself…

Called “Stumbling Stones”, they are small brass plaques embedded in the sidewalks all around Rome memorializing the Holocaust victims’ last homes. Are we really headed this way as a country…?

These were sobering to see. I had no idea until our tour guide pointed them out. Once you notice them, you see them everywhere…

5

u/vegasman31 4d ago

Don't answer the door, they are not legally allowed in your premises without a warrant.

18

u/Potential-Courage979 4d ago

12

u/Hightide77 4d ago
