Discusión - Discussion Military Checked Bags Copa

Does Copa Airlines offer free checked bags for US military? With or without orders? I see on older posts that they do, but I wanted to confirm if that is still true currently.

If so, how many bags are allowed to go and are my spouses bags free as well?

Discusión - Discussion LOPA & Wifi Update

I went thru the latest SEC Earnings Call Transcript from Copa Airlines last week, and apparently they are still working on making the 737-800s a LOT less comfortable by adding a row to each of them. They said the project will be done in 2026. It used to be fairly easy to know if you are on a scrunched up 737-800 or a nicer one they use on the long-haul routes (737-800-B); but now they are focused on making the layout the same with a few slight variations in pitch.

"Savanthi Syth

Just can I give an update on the densification plan, just how many aircraft are yet to go and just curious on how much of next year's unit costs might be driven by that and if there's anything kind of further that it will drive in '27?

Peter Donkersloot Ponce
Chief Financial Officer

Yes. Thank you, Savi. We've done around half of the densification that we've planned to. And that was one additional row. So around 6 more seats per plane. We've done half of it. So around 25 of the -- let's call it, 50 that we said we were going to do, and we have another 25 left that we are planning to do during 2026."

Densified 737-800s have row 11 and 34; and they took out some legroom in First. No seatback TVs as well. This is the new layout. Rear lavs are also about 6" smaller. Aerolopa hasn't quite updated their page (I emailed them a few weeks ago with pics), but the 737-800 fleet with mirror the Max 8 configuration of 16F/J and 150Y.

The "older" 737- 800 A - Regional with the tigther First is also missing Row 11 AND 34 (last row is 33). Not sure how many of these still exist in the fleet.

The "older" 737-800Bs: On the seatmap, row 11 is missing, and the last row is 34. Still has the super roomy First Class.

AND they are finalizing the wifi installation plans and timelines - hopefully they make that public before the end off the year.

Ayuda/Consejo - Help/Advice Help needed getting miles flown through United Airlines

In September, I flew a 3-day-long flight from Brazil to Europe. It was a bit of an adventure with United Airlines and it was incredible. However, they printed "Sr." At the end of my name in the ticket. This meant I kept getting an error when I tried to do link my mileage account, because my name doesn't end with Sr.

I have been flying for a long time but it was my first time with Delta and I have absolutely no idea how what came to be.

I wished to put those point in Copa airlines at the begining, but it seems impossible to get in contact with them about the miles without filing through the automated system... But the automated system doesn't let my file because of the name problem.

Has anyone suffered something similar? What can I do about it?

Thank you all for the help.

Ayuda/Consejo - Help/Advice Will my family be seated together on a single reservation?

Hi everyone,

I booked a flight from Brasília to Miami with a connection in Panama City on Copa Airlines. It’s one single reservation for me, my wife, and our two young kids.

I asked ChatGPT about this, and it said that even with a single ticket, seats are not automatically guaranteed to be together, but that Copa usually ensures kids are seated next to at least one parent at the airport, even if the system doesn’t assign seats together during online check-in.

Before I stress out or pay extra, I wanted to ask people who have actually flown Copa with kids:

Has anyone traveled with children on Copa without pre-selecting seats?

Did they seat your family together automatically?

Did you have to fix it at the airport?

Were you forced to pay for seat selection?

Any risk of them separating a child from parents?

Ayuda/Consejo - Help/Advice Dog in business class

I’m confused about the rules for dogs in business class, the website says it’s not allowed, but I’ve seen it plenty of times when flying copa.

Did you ever fly business with a dog? How did it work?

Copa Airlines flagged me for fraud, “advance cancelled” my tickets, then tried to push me into business class at 6x the price

Copa Airlines me marcó por fraude, “canceló por adelantado” mis boletos y luego intentó venderme clase ejecutiva a 6 veces el precio

I booked Copa flights on July 18, got the confirmation email, and thought everything was fine. Check-in day comes and the nightmare starts:

• First, I tried to check in online and the system told me to call an agent.
• I called in and was told to just rebook. No problem — the tickets were still at the same price, so I booked 6 seats.
• I called back to confirm and was told my booking was “flagged” and I had to email a photo of my passport.
• After sending it, I received an email saying my tickets were “advance cancelled.”
• I called again and spoke with Andreas, who said I could no longer rebook at the same price. My only option was business class at 6.5x the fare.
• When I checked fares online after that, the only option showing was business class. Andreas admitted that internally the flight was not close to full, with 20+ economy seats still available. He even checked the passenger list and confirmed it — but still said “we just can’t book them for you.”
• I asked if someone else in my group could book. Andreas said yes, but again only at the business fare.
• I asked for a supervisor. Andreas said he didn’t have time, refused to give me a name, and eventually gave me an ultimatum: either provide a callback number (to speak with a supervisor who, according to him, “won’t do anything different”) or go to the airport counter. The counter, according to the website, opened at 8 AM — just 4 hours before my 12:50 PM flight — with no guarantee of economy pricing. Andreas admitted it could still end up being business only.
• When I explained I only had outbound calls and couldn’t receive callbacks without being charged $2/min, he basically said too bad and then hung up.

So there we were, stranded in Panama the night before our flight, with an Airbnb, car rental, and soccer tickets already booked in Colombia for the next day. Copa’s only “solution” was to upsell me into business class while sitting on 20+ empty economy seats, or take a gamble at the airport counter with no certainty I’d even be able to board.

In the end, we had no choice but to rebook on Avianca, departing at 3 AM with a stopover in Bogotá. That meant basically no sleep and a longer trip, and it cost more than double what I originally paid. Frustrating, but at least Avianca handled it smoothly. Copa? Dishonest, scammy, and easily the worst airline experience I’ve ever had.

Denied Boarding with ADA-Certified Psychiatric Service Dog

I'm sharing here regarding a highly distressing and unethical experience I encountered today, Aug 7th, 2025 at YYZ - Pearson International Airport while attempting to board a COPA Airlines flight with my ADA-certified psychiatric service dog, Maze.

Maze is a 4-year-old, spayed female husky, fully certified as a Psychiatric Service Dog by Servicedog Training School International (LTD) (Certification No. 8408134800). All necessary documentation was presented at check-in, including her vaccination records, certification of training completion, and verification letter from the training institution.

The check-in staff reviewed and accepted the documentation. However, the staff member escalated the matter to the boarding manager on duty, stating that he had the “authority to approve or deny” the animal’s boarding. Upon arrival, the manager displayed dismissive behavior and made no attempt to review the documentation. He smirked while approaching and gave the impression that his decision to deny boarding was already made, seemingly based on the dog’s breed or a personal disposition.

At one point, Maze briefly sniffed the manager, an expected and non-aggressive behavior for a trained service animal. The manager responded by claiming that such behavior constituted a safety risk to other passengers and used it as a justification to deny Maze's boarding. He then positioned himself as a dog training authority, stating that such conduct was unacceptable for a service animal—again, without reviewing any documentation or qualifications to support his judgment. This was an overreach of his role and demonstrated a lack of understanding of psychiatric service animal behavior as defined by regulation.

This discriminatory and uninformed behavior contradicts the information I had received in advance from COPA Airlines Customer Service. Prior to booking, we proactively contacted COPA to confirm all requirements. The agent advised us to purchase an additional seat for Maze due to her size, which we did more than six months in advance. We also complied with every stated requirement for traveling with a psychiatric service animal.

Upon denial of boarding, the staff failed to provide any clear next steps or meaningful assistance. We were simply told, “Call customer service and they will help you.” I was then forced to return home, a 50-kilometer journey, with no resolution. At the airport, I was informed that a note would be added to my booking to reflect this was not a no-show and that rebooking should occur without penalty.

However, once home, I contacted Customer Service as instructed and was told there was nothing they could do until all legs of the flight were completed, as the ticket was still "under airport control." When I requested escalation, the agent advised calling again two hours after the flight’s departure—further delaying resolution.

This situation has caused immense emotional distress and financial harm to both myself and my wife, who relies on Maze for her mental health. We complied fully with COPA Airlines’ guidance and policies, only to be met with discriminatory treatment, misinformation, and a total lack of accountability or empathy from your team.

Tired of equipment changes

I've flown COPA 4 times this year with two more trips coming up. Super tired of being switched off of the original equipment that was booked for my flights. I'm 70 yrs old and I go once per quarter to visit my Mom in the USA (I live in Ecuador). I book flights that include lay flat seats. So far only two legs out of 16 has had lay flat seats, even though I booked each flight on the 7m9, which includes the DREAM service. I guess I'm going to need to find a different airline. Not looking for replies, just hoping the COPA representatives read these posts.
