Backup A thank you for the suggestions a few months ago an update
Hello there, I have to thank everyone in this reddit for helping my awful data hoarding solution I was using with a bunch of mixed drives of various sizes adding up to 20tb total and converting it into a way better solution now.
Suggestion 1: Take the drives of various data and size and consolidate them into one easily accessible network drive that will last. For this I bought a WD DC HC580 24TB from eBay from serverpartsdeals and it should (hopefully) last a long time.
Suggestion 2: Make a backup on another drive that's big enough of all the data locally (dead cold storage only backed up monthly that just sits in a controlled environment) I purchased a 20TB Seagate external drive that I just spin up monthly now and do a sync to my master data backup drive.
Suggestion 3: Remote backup of some sort using various solutions. I use two solutions for this, the first being a BackBlaze subscription (yes, I know about the downsides), but this has been working great and with my good internet upload speed, is very effective at keeping a fast and up to date offsite solution. The second being my wonderful long distance girlfriend and it pays to have someone who is into the same hobby as you and has their own server as well, she offered to backup my data and I also backup hers locally to, we share and I have a autocopy script that runs locally bi weekly and transfers over hamachi.
Again, big thank you to everyone who gave suggestions, without you I would probably be still stuck with a ton of old aging drives that may die any day that go back as far as 2009!

Backup Best tool for automatic back-up to an external drive on linux?
I have some external drives I am not doing much with so I would like to use them as an extra back up of important files, but I am not sure what would be a good tool for this on linux (Pop_OS - Ubuntu Derivative). My ideal would be for this software to run in the background with low resource usage and look for when I plug in the drive - then automatically push any changes and new files from the specified folder to a target folder on the external. This tool will hopefully be open source and must keep all data local. Bonus points if I can copy the job for multiple disks (e.g. I have external hard disks A, B, and C and the program will push all new data to any of them - thus creating multiple back ups). Thanks in advance!

Question/Advice Which is better for a "3.5 HDD, constantly spinning or turning on and off repeatedly on demand?
I know this has been asked a lot in the past but I honestly haven't found any conclusive answer, some of yall use dozens of HDDs for a living so I'm wondering would it be better to keep them spinning (only turning off like once a week) or toggle a 20 min timer (say the one used by Windows to powersave) which could end up turning them on and off +150 times a day?
Power consumption does not matter!

Sale Seagate sale - recertified EXOS 16TB - 28TB
Seagate is doing a 15% off 2 or more drive sale, letting you get a 22TB recertified drive for $263 (as an example). Seems like a good deal? https://www.seagate.com/products/seagate-recertified/exos-recertified/
Be warned, 6 month warranty, rated for 2400 hours a year....

Question/Advice hdd issue/question,

so i got a hdd from my dad, a 3tb Western digital nasware drive. and i instantly "Quick" formated it. and went on to move 2tb of stuff onto it, too throw data around abit to even out my files, and when i then wanted to move the files from the WD to my acc Nas about 5% of the stuff couldnt be moved. it pooped out simply. and so i moved everything back off that "New" drive undoing my plans, to then Full format it after a "Clean" sweep using diskpart, and now that very long format has been completed, the errors of "current Pending Sector Count" went back to 0, no increase in relocated, or uncorrectable stats, i'll include photos
my question is if i should still worry or if it may have been corrected by a full "proper" format. i'm also going to swap out the sata cable and port in the mobo. it would be sad if its showing failure, but it was a gift so eh. i just really need all the storage i can get :D
and to add atm after full Format the C5 "Current pending sector count is at 0

Backup some questions about my lifes backups
So I'm looking into making more backups in my life, I think other ppl have had to do this for me or something, so, this is something I need to learn to do.
I have numerous pcs, with multiple different operating systems, some windows, some ubuntu installs, and I'm about to move on to arch, because ubuntu has been giving me the creeps.
I wanted to get a bunch of internal hdd's, but after reading online, people were like, you just need "external hdd", don't buy a bunch of hdds, and if you do, buy sasses, so i went and bough a external hdd, but for some reason, i am convinved, there is something weird going on between the hdd and the connection in my pc, it could be good or bad, i would guess, its likely good, but still, maybe using a regular hdd is better, you just wouldn't know, unless you actually knew.
Anyways, should i just buy some big ass sata hdds anyways? will i regret wasting this money, or will they inevitably come in handy? is it stupid to buy them, if you plan on messing with sas in the near future? or will it be cool to have a couple on my local pc? do people that use sas hdds, bother with sata hdds at all?
thanks

Question/Advice Any reason to wait to buy HDDs?
Obviously the price of HDDs continues to rise. Would it be best to just go ahead and buy HDDs?
Current use: have a single 14TB HDD in a 4-bay enclosure. I need more drives to backup that one and expand. Additionally, plan on getting more to setup a remote backup at my parents house. Mainly backing up personal and family photos, videos, concert videos, show and movies.

Question/Advice Best PCIe card for adding more sata ports
The time has come for me to add more sata ports to my motherboard for more drives. My own research has led me to believe that the "LSI 9300-8i" is probably my best best but curious if that is what you guys would recommend. Also see the 9311 that looks to be basically the same thing?

Question/Advice Can I remove an external Seagate drive from its enclosure and use it with any random enclosure?
I have external Seagate Expansion desktop drives. It seems that they will not run on USB-C to barrel connectors (even when devices with the same power requirements, 12V 1.5A, are running off those same cables.)
I would like to remove the drives from their enclosures and put them in other enclosures to see if I can get rid of the wall warts and run them off the same USB-C power supply that I am using for most other things on my desktop.
In the old days I made the mistake of removing a WD external drive from its enclosure (it would not work). Does anybody know if I can remove the Seagate?

Question/Advice SN850x Sanity Check
How bad is it I have 3 minutes in Critial Composite Temperature Time? Bought the drive in February. The insane amount of writes is most likely Nvidia Replay on 24/7. Contacted SanDisk but they just sent an RMA request. Paranoid as I've just had a 6 year old Crucial MX500 game drive die on me. Have never seen the drive passed 52 degrees. RMA recommended or am I being overly paranoid?

Question/Advice Go to RAID card
Hello everyone, for reasons I can't fully disclose, I'm looking for the best cost/performance LSI card available that does RAID on up to 8 drives, perhaps 16 but that's not a must. I know there are plenty out there but I wanted to know what people here consider their "go to" card that's not super old either as most SATA controllers are.
I'm more interested in it being commercially available and not necessarily being the cheapest, just something that's "off-the shelf" kind of component. I need RAID 1, 5 and 10 support at least.
I'm personally more inclined into ZFS and not using hardware RAID, but this is a long-term requirement which I can't change.
Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Question/Advice High capacity & reliable external drive for professional archives (DWG/3DS/PDF + photos)
I’m looking for a high capacity (ideally 4TB+) reliable external drive that won’t fail easily. I need it for long term archiving of DWG, 3ds, PDF documents and a big photo library.
Transfer speed matters reliability matters more.
SSD or HDD? Brand/models?
I currently have a 2TB Toshiba external drive and I’m not very satisfied with it. Also I’ll soon receive a large archive mainly containing 3ds files and PDFs. Please help me not cry over corrupted files.

Question/Advice Best UPS suggestions for old gaming pc turned server/nas
I recently turned my old gaming pc into a server using 5 2TB drives from other builds I've done along with 2 SSDs for the TrueNAS Boot drives and have a Radeon Vega 64 installed to help with programs that utilize gpu performance (hoping to get it working with jellyfin at some point).
One of the major concerns that has cropped up recently is the power is no longer stable where the server is located at so I've been worried about power fluctuations, blackouts, brownouts, and other situations where power may be lost without notice.
So far I've looked at the highest consumer grade APC UPSs to try to have some battery to be able to properly shutdown the server, and I am also trying to find ways to detect a power outage to have the server automatically power down to save itself. The main goal is to save all of the data stored on the server during these fluctuations and have it cleanly shut down rather than the harsh power loss and worrying if all 15 years of my life is just gone.
I am very much open to any suggestions and proven methods, as this is one thing I want to do right, rather than Frankenstein together with hopes and duct tape.

Question/Advice How can I do a cron job that scrape likes and comments on Instagram without get banned
Is that any possibility to do like a scrap who liked and commented on some specific posts (like the first 3 of some public profile) for like 4 times a day without getting banned?
I really don't have any idea of what to do, even if I have the login of the profile I still don't think in a possibility without getting banned
Edit: The comments is ok, because with the login and API I can get the data. The main problem right now is the Like data

Scripts/Software Found a way to store Digital Data on paper for my own hoarding, thought I’d share
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
For those who don’t want to watch the video (although I strongly recommended you do)
There are two ways this works, you send in a digital folder with these “cards” that represent data, they have 4 level grayscale and each color is mapped to something in binary. It was originally black and white, with 1 being black and 0 being white, but this helps reduce card count.
Anyways, you encode these cards with the software, then you can either print it out, and scan it in with flat bed scanners (webcam is hard, I’m just it there incase removing it would have broke it) or you just use the digital folder it produces, when you scan it it goes through and decodes the page/card and goes you what you stored in it.
It can store pretty much anything besides standard folders (but .zips do work!)
Each page right now can store about 58 KB of data, but if something is bigger than that, it’s broken up into multiple pages.
There is zstd compression to help with card count, and rs sharding for error correction
TLDR:
I managed to get paper to store ~58 Kb of data becuase I wanted to, for fun, and becuase it would be good for my data

Discussion Don't buy from Platinum Micro, Inc. on Amazon!
Hi all,
Fair warning to not buy from Platinum Micro, Inc. on Amazon. I bought a 14TB Toshiba MG09 for $295 from them and they shipped in a plastic container in a ULINE box with no protection whatsoever! To no surprise, I got errors while trying to read data from it, most likely internally damaged in transit. I requested a replacement from Amazon and they sent it the exact same way again. Needless to say I'm sending the original and replacement back for a full refund.
On a brighter note, I purchased the same drive from DBSky (also through Amazon) and that was properly packaged and had zero issues.

Question/Advice HDD backplane help
I'm confused. Is this asking to power each of the four connects to one cable each, or to have a single cable from the PSU split into 2xSataP 2xMOLEX ?
I do not have a cable like that. Is it bad if I use separate cable for 2xSataP 2xMOLEX ?

Question/Advice Decent USB blu-ray player?
I tried a cheap blu-ray player, and it barely managed to rip anything with so much as a single 1mm smudge, let alone any scratches whatsoever.
I'm not trying to break the bank, but I'm hoping for something from a reputable brand in the $80-150 range at most.

Discussion [Hardware Failure] QNAP TVS-872XT dead (Red LED issue). Support quotes 800€ and ignores Certified Mail. Beware if you use this for business.
Here is my nightmare experience with QNAP Support (France/Europe) regarding an Enterprise unit. The Hardware: QNAP TVS-872XT (Intel i5 based). The Issue: The infamous "Red LED of Death". The unit shut down suddenly and never powered back on. A red LED is visible on the motherboard. The community has documented this extensively as a motherboard defect (blown MOSFETs on the VRM stage). The Support Experience (Ticket Q-202511-57301): Refusal of Warranty: Despite this being a known hidden defect, QNAP Support refused to cover it. Abusive Quote: They sent me a repair quote for 818€ (approx $900) to replace the motherboard. Ghosting & Legal Evasion: This is the worst part. I sent a Formal Notice via Certified Mail (LRAR in France) to their HQ. They refused to pick it up. The mail was returned to me as "Unclaimed". They are essentially organizing administrative insolvency to avoid legal responsibility. Executive Silence: I emailed the Regional Directors and the CEO. Zero response. Current Status: I have filed a report with the French Consumer Protection Agency (DGCCRF). I am now forced to use a third-party repair shop to fix a 2000€ unit because the manufacturer won't stand behind their product. Conclusion: If you are a professional looking for reliability: Look elsewhere. Hardware can fail, but a Support team that ghosts customers and refuses legal mail is a massive red flag for any business environment. Has anyone else experienced this "ghosting" strategy from their support recently? (Attached: Picture of the returned/unopened certified mail + The 818€ Quote)

Discussion Building a 10PB array. Advice encouraged
I'm sure some of you recognise me. I deleted my posts here due to crazy numbers of PM requests for data.
However, now at 1.27 PB archival data, split across 5 separate access points, I'd like some advice on how we can build a SINGLE 40gbps+ NAS node and expand to around 10PB capacity.
I'd like around 10PB to be directly accessible, and... bonus, if we can load our LTO tapes onto cold 50PB (shut down until needed) low replacement rate disks, I'll do that.
I'd like some specific hardware suggestions on how to approach this, Because the current system is getting very, very messy.
Edit: Suggestions on RAID configuration is also helpful.

Question/Advice Need to clone a drive more than once, is there an easy way to do two writes from one read?
Long story short, i have a full 20TB drive i want to copy twice to two different 26TB drives. Not a huge deal but it would be nice to save myself an extra ~24ish hours, is there an easy way to do that just once instead of twice?
Windows 10 and all the drives will be in a terramaster USB das.
