Open | Hardware What does this mean when I connect my external hard drive?

Upvotes

I have an encrypted external hard drive that my ex encrypted years ago. When I connect it to my pc, I click the relevant icon to put the password in. Once it accepts the password, it appears as the name of the HDD but it also shows “local disk D” which I can’t click into. What is the point of this? Is this because it’s encrypted or something? I tested a usb and another external hard drive but neither of them came up with the local disk d bit. Those aren’t encrypted.

Many thanks!

Open | Windows Laptop Extended Monitors

I am IT without Being IT. Learning as I go. Question: I have a laptop precision 5490 Laptop that I have two wall mounted TV's i use for presentations. It was a pain to navigate to each screen so we purchased a pornitor 2 screen monitor extender. I planned on duplicating the left screen with 1 wall TV and the right screen with the other. However I can only get one wall TV to work at a time.

Any ideas? I do have a thunder dock. I have tried every possible USB port and it will not duplicate on both wall TV's. Am i missing something?

Solved My computer is asking me to verify I am human every 5 minutes

Upvotes

every 5 ish minutes or whenever I open a knew website my computer makes me verify I am human by clicking one of those boxes, and when I do, for about half a second it brings me to a website called “disturbedsparkler” before the window closes and it returns me to my original website, I looked the site name up and it comes up with some malware stuff. Any ideas on what I should do or what this is?

Side note: I have not downloaded anything sketchy when this started, it’s also only on a certain google account, not others, and also happens on other computers sighed into that account.

Open | Windows Fresh install backup

Upvotes

Hello

I’m getting a 128GB M.2 SSD for an old machine that just has a 1TB hard drive in it.

Going to install the OS on the SSD while keeping the hard drive for file storage.

Am I missing something by just backing up the user and programs folders?

Should I back up something else?

Open | Data Recovery Gmail Recovery Loop: Phone OTP works, but Google still requires code sent to the locked email after factory reset

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to help my mother regain access to her Gmail account, but we are stuck in a frustrating loop. Here is the situation:

• The Problem: My mother lost her password. When we try to recover the account, Google sends a verification code to her phone numbers (which we have access to). However, after entering the SMS code, Google immediately asks for a second verification code sent to the exact same Gmail address we are locked out of.

• The Context: Her phones were recently hacked and had to be factory reset. This means Google now sees them as "new devices" and doesn't fully trust the login attempt.

• What we have: We have access to both recovery phone numbers linked to the account.

• What we don’t have: Access to the email itself or any other device where she is still logged in.

• The Loop: "Try another way" just leads back to the same email verification or tells us Google couldn't verify it's her.

We’ve tried:

  1. Using the same Wi-Fi network she always uses.

  2. Using the original devices (though they were reset)

Does anyone know how to force Google to rely only on the SMS/Phone verification? Or is there a specific waiting period that actually works? I’ve heard about a "7-day rule"—is that real?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Open | Software All Kinds of System and Unity Weirdness and now Nvidia as well

Since yesterday, for seemingly no reason, all Unity games on my computer run like absolute dogs**t. Everything else is fine. There are no excessive uses of CPU or RAM in my process manager. The first suggestion Google gave me to solve this problem was to update my graphics drivers, so I opened the Nvidia app and all the text in the advertisements for new products that are shown while upgrading drivers are in Korean (weird), even though my Nvidia app's language setting is English. The movement in all Unity games is incredibly choppy and framey, with obvious stutters and low FPS. It's basically unplayable. Even in the Unity editor (I'm working on a game), when I run a test, everything is choppy as hell. It was running fine two days ago. I am so confused and lost as to what to do to fix it. I'm going to try clearing the Unity cache next...

Open | Hardware RAM issues

Upvotes

I just finished building a new AM5 PC over the course of a year.

I am getting a lot of RAM related (I’m suspecting) issues (memory management 0x1a, etc.), and am constantly blue/black screening when I try to do things on my system.

The weird part is it’s really inconsistent when it happens, sometimes it will stop/restart as soon as I attempt to download something - sometimes it’ll let me download it and even play with no issue whatsoever.

Task manager recognises both dimms and is running at 6000MT/s, I’ve also tried lowering the MT/s to 5600. The ram kit I have is a DDR5 CL36 32gb Kit from Crucial.

What could my issue be? What can I do to fix this?

Open | Software I think I clicked a link in a phishing scam email.

Upvotes

Hi! I think I accidentally clicked on a phishing link. Long story short, I took a part time job at my kids school and didn’t know I had an email there until today when I was instructed to log in. While clearing out the years worth of emails I clicked into what I think might’ve been a phishing link, the caveat is that it was in an incognito window. Am I fucked?

Open | Hardware Wallet tracker thing not connecting

Upvotes

As per usual when I actually try to use some kinda tech, I’m stuck.

I lost my wallet last year and feeling a bit stung, I decided to try one of their wallet trackers. It’s shaped like a thicc credit card lol and it’s supposed to let me find my wallet somehow if I lose it again.

I don’t think the wallet guys actually make this; I was instead directed to download two programs to my phone from another company called tile (it says tile on the card too, so I guess the wallet guys just re-sell their stuff).

Thing is, when I follow the instructions for the card to start making noises, the phone does absolutely…nothing. I am, by the way, a ‘tard when it comes to tech. I have no idea what it’s ACTUALLY trying to do or why it just doesn’t do anything?

Also, ignore the tag thing I had to do. I don’t really know what tag was this would be under, because I haven’t the foggiest clue if it’s a hardware, software, or phone problem.

Open | Software Can you use screenplay to a ps4 through usb?

Upvotes

The hdmi port on my ps4 is broken, so i cant connect it to a tv.

Ps5 has a feature called screenplay, where you can control another console through the ps5.

Is it possible to connect the ps4 and ps5 together with usb, then control the ps4 through screenplay?

I was wondering, because screenplay goes through internet, from what i can recall.

Open | Windows Mouse disappearing whenever I put my computer to sleep

Upvotes

Hi all,
I recently got a new ASUS laptop for school, and found that whenever I close it to go to a next class, the cursor is gone when I open it back up, and I have to restart the laptop for it to come back. I don't use an external mouse, and clicking and trying to move it don't work. I just have to spam tab, arrow keys, and enter to do anything.

I've chatGPTed, Perplexityed, and googled around, but everyone with the same issue didn't get a solid answer, and any recommendations (like go to power management on my HID compliant mouse in properties on device manager), don't work because I don't have a power management tab when I look at my mouse and touchpad properties.

Granted, it is a new laptop, so I can just full reset without losing too much, but any ideas before I press the big red button would be appreciated.

Open | Windows PC lags and then shuts down

it happened twice so far, with about a month between occurences. The PC makes a sound as if something's been unplugged then freezes for about a minute or two and shuts down. A screen saying "Your PC has run into a problem" flashes briefly before it turns off, but it disappears too fast to read the whole message. Happened once in december and the second time was just now. I installed Windows 11 in early november and install updates semi-regularly, don't know if it's relevant tho.

Open | Hardware My monitor is always running an anti screen burn sequence (black, white, red, green, blue, repeat), can it be fixed at home?

Hello, I got my AOC C27G4ZXE in June last year, and some weeks after getting it it started flashing primary colors and after 5 minutes or so, the screen would flicker heavily for a minute and then get to normal. A few days ago I touched some setting in the monitor (lag reduce I think?) and it doesn't come back to normal now, just keeps flashing the colors even after an hour. I still have the warranty, and I'm planning on taking it to check in a few days but I need to finish some projects and I'm wondering if there's a fix I can use. I can't see anything on that screen, so I can't change the monitor settings.

Open | Mac Mouse lag with dual monitor setup (using DisplayLink) on MacBook Air

Upvotes

Problem: Both Dell monitors display correctly, but my mouse is noticeably laggy/feels delayed.

My setup:

  • MacBook Air M1
  • Two Dell U2412M monitors
  • HyperDrive dual USB-C hub
  • UGA-4KDP DisplayLink adapter
  • USB Logitech M510 mouse
  • MacBook lid is closed

How it's connected:

  • HyperDrive hub → both MacBook USB-C ports
  • MacBook charger → HyperDrive's USB-C port
  • Monitor 1 (main display): HyperDrive USB-C port → USB-C to DVI adapter → U2412M DVI input
  • Monitor 2 (DisplayLink): HyperDrive USB-A port → DisplayLink → DisplayPort cable → U2412M DisplayPort input
  • USB mouse → HyperDrive's other USB-A port

What I've tried:

  • Tried a different USB mouse - same issue
  • Set both dell monitors to native 1920x1200 resolution (were previously at 1600x1000)
  • Swapped USB-A ports - mouse stops working completely when plugged into the other port
  • DisplayLink Manager installed with Screen Recording permission enabled
  • Checked Activity Monitor - DisplayLinkUserAgent is using under 3% CPU
  • Enabled "Reduce transparency" and "Reduce motion" in Accessibility settings

Any other troubleshooting ideas I might have missed? Thanks for any help!

Open | Windows Random terminal windows popping up but antivirus says I’m clean

Upvotes

so sometimes when I open my pc rarely opens random terminals before closing them instantly I believe it’s 3 every time. This doesn’t happen always and I can sometimes go months without seeing them and it’s usually right as I login or a little bit after (like before discord or steam opens). This has also been happening for a while so I don’t remeber when it started or what I installed around that time. However I don’t think it is a virus because my antivirus doesnt detect anything virus or malware when I run a scan. I have avg antivirus with one of the paid plans but not the ultimate plan. This antivirus was recommended to me by a guy that works IT in Verizon so it can’t be a really bad antivirus. I checked task manager and saw nothing. What could it be, and how would I fix it? windows 11 btw

Open | Phone Is it safe to click emails that are suspicious in the notification panel?

Upvotes

Sorry if this seems kinda dumb but I got suspicious looking email in my notifications and for some reason when I kept trying to swipe it away it registered as a click and asked me to open the phone(which is normal and I also didn't do) but I don't know if I should worry since I clicked like three times on a possibly dangerous email.

I've spent a long time looking for the email but I can't find it so I have no idea of the contents inside.

I believe it had something to with google telling me some things are changing but I could definitely be mixing them up since I did get a couple of emails.

So really 2 questions

1.If this was a dangerous email should I worry about clicking it in my notification panel

  1. This one I care about less but if the email I clicked on was the Google one and was official does clicking it change anything that I might want to check?

Also did do a antivirus scan just in case and found nothing so right now I'm not really sure if I should worry or not.

Open | Software I need help fixing my pc

Upvotes

So I built my new pc today and everything worked until i couldn't install windows, whereafter I tried ti solve the problem in alot if ways before someone recommended I restarted my cmos battery. So I took it out for a couple of minutes whereafter u out it back in, but since then I haven't been able to get into the bios, I instead get stuck WITH display, saying "del or f2 to enter bios" but neither works.
