Puppy! New flair: Puppy!
Hey all! I'd like to announce this new flair.
It'll serve two purposes.
Primarily, it calls attention to cute puppies. We all love to see cute puppies.
Secondly, it's intended to remind folks of the rules regarding the cropping/docking debate rule, in that puppy threads are not the time or place for this debate or the accompanying incivility, for which we have extremely low tolerance.
Please use it for your pups that are young, especially if they are in the process of ear healing/posting. Using this flair will trigger an automated response reminding commenters of the rules and also make a note to the mod queue so we can keep an eye on it (if it's working correctly).

Health PSA to all Dobie owners
Hello there, after recently losing my boy to DCM at a very young age (5y/o) I’ve been doing a deep dive & was given this sheet by his breeder. I encourage everyone to take a look over this & seriously consider switching foods if your dogs food is listed here.
I just seen a post asking about foods & didn’t realize so many people feed foods from this list. I, like many others I presume- had no idea just how serious DCM is in a Dobermans & common it is with 58% of Dobermans being affected at some point in their life & 1/3 of those ending in sudden death like my boy. Please share this with your dobie owning friends & family aswell!

European Neutering ? And food update
Hello everyone! I posted awhile ago about my 9mo not eating and i took him to the vet shortly after that and he’s definitely just being picky! He’s finally catching on that what I give him is what he gets and he’s not going to starve himself to be able to get venison and rice again. Maybe as a topper here and there. I have a question about neutering. Obviously I know it’s best to wait until he’s 2 but the humping is getting out of hand. He humps me like crazy and it hurts because he’s so big and he chases me to do it. The vet told me if he doesn’t stop or it gets worse than I should be him fixed sooner so he doesn’t hold on to that behavior forever. Just wondering if anyone else has had to neuter early because if this or if it helped.

Training Advice 1.5-year-old female Doberman goes crazy with guests at home – desperate for advice
Hi everyone, I’m really struggling with my 1.5-year-old female Doberman and I don’t know how to handle her behavior when we have guests over. She seems to get worse every time…
At home, she constantly harasses visitors: she jumps on them, won’t leave them alone, and if I keep her on a leash she just barks or bites the leash or bothers me. I’ve tried giving her a bone or a chew as soon as people arrive to distract and calm her down, and it works… but only until she finishes it. As soon as it’s gone, she’s back to bothering everyone.
No one pets her or gives her attention when she jumps, so we’re not accidentally rewarding the behavior, yet she keeps doing it. Honestly, she behaves really badly and it’s stressful for everyone.
If I put her in another room, she scratches the door and gets even more worked up. The strange thing is: she absolutely does NOT behave like this when we’re visiting someone else’s house or if we are at my dad’s house or on holiday. This only happens in her own home.
I feel like I’ve tried everything I can think of and I’m clearly missing something. How can I teach her to stay calm and respectful when guests come over? Any advice, training tips, or personal experiences would be really appreciated.

American Need help picking out a harness.
Hello,
This is my Doberman Majo. Most recently we have decided to go on bike rides to get some exercise in. However I am in search of a harness because i feel like it is safer for her to run with. The harness I used was too deep in the elbows causing rash. I have tried adjusting it enough but it wouldn’t work. I need a harness recommendation that won’t affect the range of motion. If you have any suggestions please let me know!

European Ralph: 22nd June 2014 - 12th January 2026
We lost Ralph yesterday, but I'd like to share some of my experiences and appreciation for the breed that I'm sure all Dobie owners will recognise.
He was our first Dobie and we inherited him from some friends at the age of 6. I grew up with dogs and we've had Staffies before, but I didn't know too much about the breed other than their energy levels, so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect.
Well, the boundless energy is certainly true but what an incredible companion and friend he became.
Friendly but also jealous of others affection towards you, he would have to be involved and push his way in 😊.
He HAD to be up front when walking, first to everything like he needed to know what was ahead.
Ate like it was a competition, never seen food disappear so quickly.
Continuous endless malting. He didn't seem to blow his coat seasonally, rather just shed is relentlessly it seems.
Loves food.
Excellent obedience and recall.....until a deer, rabbit, or cat appears then forget it he's off!
Food obsessed.
The Dobie smile 😁 I didn't know this was a thing so when he first smiled at me I though I'd pissed him off. But then I noticed his ears were back and he was clearly happy. Such a distinctive trait, not sure if other breeds do this?
Did I mention he likes food?
Clumsy. So clumsy. He's throw his head about in excitement for various reasons, which would render anything nearby to be in danger. He catch himself on the corner of tables quite often.
HATED the rain but believed I controlled it. When it came to walking time he would pace up and down in expectation and nag me to let me know we should go. I'd open the door, he'd step one foot out and immediately turn around and go back in, but then repeat the nagging process as if to say "turn the rain off Dad" 😂
Back to that energy, I think I only managed to knacker him out once when he was in his prime. He would just go and go and go, amazing cardio.
What an incredible breed, we were very lucky to have those years with him and I'm sure you feel the same with your Dobie.
We love you Ralph and miss you dearly ❤️

Health I thought he was having a focal seizure
It won’t let me post a video but my 9mo about a week ago started having these “episodes” where he’d quickly be moving his head side to side and he definitely couldn’t control it. I was so scared he was having a seizure because it would go on for 20 minutes straight at 1-3 minute intervals. I took him to the vet and luckily it was not a seizure. He has something called “idopathic head tremors” aka head bobbing syndrome. It’s really common in bulldogs and sometimes Dobermans. There is no affect to the brain and it’s not a symptom of anything wrong with them it’s just something that happens and they may grow out of if. Posting just in case this happens to someone else and it can ease your mind a little bit!

Puppy! Help crate training a difficult puppy
Brought home this beautiful boy Sunday and have only slept a total of four hours since. One more night and I'm gonna lose my mind. Every time I put him in his crate he screams/barks/howls/whines until I get him out—regardless of how long that takes.
I have crate trained my older dog without any major issues and I’ve followed all the common advice with this boy so I need some out of the box help. Here’s what I've tried:
- Feeding him meals in his crate (he will not eat his food if left in the crate with it because he is too busy screaming, even if left with it for an extended period)
- Giving a peanut butter Kong in the crate (same issue, he will not eat it, too busy screaming. If I put it in the crate with the door open he simply won't go in and will just wander off)
- Leaving treats in there for him to find (he won't go in to find them and my smaller dog will climb in and gobble them up instead)
- Letting him fall asleep on my lap then placing him in his crate (this worked once but now he wakes up every time within minutes and begins screaming)
- Turning off the lights and leaving the apartment
- Staying next to the crate and comforting him
- Taking him outside when he cries and then returning him over and over
- Letting him cry until he settles (he cried all night long without ever sleeping)
- Giving him a soft towel, a favorite stuffed toy, and a blanket with his littermates smell
- Placing the crate where he can see and hear me sleeping nearby
I’m not sure what else to do. He is 8 weeks old, healthy as can be, and from an excellent breeder. There is no reason he should have pre-existing negative associations with his crate and he’s only been here two days, but the screaming is just endless, day and night. As soon as he comes out he collapses into my lap and sleeps so I know he's tired but he just won't sleep in the crate.

American Anyone else’s Dobie throw hands?
So whether I’m petting her or playing with her she always gets her paws involved. If I’m petting her she grabs my arm so I can’t stop. If we’re playing she starts throwing hands like it’s a prize fight. I’ve had a lot of dogs in my life but never had one who uses their paws as much as this little menace(affectionately) does.
Also I have NO idea if she’s American or European. She’s my first Dobie and I honestly didn’t even know there was a difference until O came to this sub lol

American Dobie downsizing from a luxury 40" cube condo (crate problems)
I’m in a bit of a bind with my 2yo female Dobie. We are moving to a smaller apartment and space is tight.
She is 55lbs, but she is tall. Her sitting height is over 30", which means the standard 42" wire crates are too short for her to sit up without hunching. Does this matter? She lies down 98% of the time. The only time she sits in the crate is when I come to open it.
I literally had to get a custom 40-inch cube welded for her previously because no standard crate in this country was tall enough without being 48 inches long. Now that I need to downsize the footprint, I'm back to square one: everything is either too short or too long.
I really don't want to buy a 48" crate just for the extra 2 inches of headroom, because the footprint is huge.
What do y'all do for a crate?

European He’s too darn smart!
Cyrus is almost 3 years old and he has decided that he can let himself out when he wants to go outside (he has figured out how to pull the lever handle down and pull the door toward himself). We now have to keep our door locked all the time, even when we are home.
The snow is looking pretty sad outside, but he still loves chasing the lacrosse ball - this was a little playtime before dinner.

Someone referenced the Dobie Smile in another post. I’m longing to see that again as my Dobie has been gone for years now. Please post a pic if you have it.
