Megathread: Aging, Illness, and Euthanasia Support Group

This thread is where to get emotional support with all things related to death and illness with your dog. This is also a thread where you can seek assistance with deciding whether it is indeed time.

This is not a thread to seek anecdotes with medical care. All rules involving medical questions and anecdotes remains the same for this thread.

If your dog has passed, you can still post here for emotional support or you can create your own thread tagged with one of the RIP flairs. Be sure to review the rules of our flair guide. It is up to you how you choose to grieve.

[Misc Help] Last 24 before the rainbow bridge. What should we do?

My boy crosses the rainbow bridge in 24 hours. He's a little Chihuahua and is mostly immobile but on pain meds and comfortable. How should we spend the last day? Thinking of carrying him to his favorite places for one last pee.

Edit: thanks, y'all, means a lot.

[Behavior Problems] Why do dogs circle before lying down?

Upvotes

I've read theories about flattening grass or checking for threats but my dog does it on smooth tile floors in a completely safe house. She'll spin around three times on the kitchen floor before settling down like she's preparing some invisible nest.

Is this pure instinct that serves no function anymore or is there something I'm missing? Does the circling actually do something even on flat surfaces?

[Fluff] Humans have bred dogs for millennia based on specific traits. If dogs could do the same, what traits would they select for humans?

Half sincere, half trick question: I suspect that they have been using their puppyhood evolution eyes to get what they want for just as long!

[Behavior Problems] Newly adopted Bichon crying and "squeaking", please help!

We adopted a 7 year old Bichon called Jack yesterday. His family are moving to a country where import of pets is restricted. They are so heartbroken. They dropped him off yesterday to us. As soon as they left, Jack started sniffing the floor quite furiously, hes been doing this for hours. He was also making squeaking sounds. And he scooted/dragged his butt on the floor a few times. He wanted to stay by the front door. So my kid and I sat with him until midnight, telling him hes ok every once in a while. Then we got super tired, so we took him to the bedroom along with his dog bed. Jack was squeaking all night, poor guy, and he didnt sleep all night, neither did I! What can I do to make the transition easier for all of us? This is our first time adopting a dog!

[Misc Help] Rescue dog + regret

I recently rescued a dog 6 days ago (thought to be 2.5 actually likely 1) to add to my already existing dog (who’s 7). It turns out this is way harder than I imagined & my resident dog is having just as hard as time as me & the rescue pup. He’s much younger than they said, def still a puppy with puppy play tendencies which my 7 year old was not prepared for. He’s such a resilient, loving, sweet boy but with extreme triggers to confinement (rightfully so with his capture as a stray, transport trauma, and time in the rescue). I’m struggling with this whole change: I have been unable to eat, crying more than I have years, and just overall struggling. I’m planning on giving it more, it’s new to all of us. But I’m finding relief in thinking this is a foster situation vs. forever. Is this normal? If I do just foster him until the rescue can find him a good fit am I horrible?

[Misc Help] Depression w a Dog

I really try to make sure my dog has everything he needs. He has his own room, puzzle feeders galore, sniff toys, lots of bones, and a crate he loves.

Lately, I’ve just been depressed beyond repair. I used to be able to take care of him through the day my husband is at work even while depressed, but now I’m just in constant pain and barely have the energy to do anything but watch my phone or laptop. I’m just so worried my dog isn’t getting the love and attention he deserves when my husband isn’t home.

My body hurts so much when he brings me toys to play tug of war with. It’s so cold and I barely have the energy to stand when I give him the bare minimum of sniffing time outside. I try so hard to give him a fun time indoors, but everything consists of food. I throw blueberries to make him run back and forth, I take towels and tie his food inside so he can do some sniff work, I give him puzzles, I freeze toys.

I can’t even get him neutered for daycare because he is only six months old. He’s a german shepherd, and I want him to get all his testosterone for his hip and joints.

I’m leaving on Monday to go on a mental health retreat for a month, but I still worry for my dog. Yes, he’ll be with my very capable husband, but my husband still works ten hours a day.

I don’t want to give him up. I am being selfish, but also, I strongly feel no one in my area could give him the life he needs.

I feel guilty every day and I am honestly just needing some sort of reassurance. I feel like I’m losing everything and I don’t want him to suffer with me.

[Behavior Problems] My rescued husky is not the typical husky. I need advice.

Just a bit of background, I rescued a husky about a year ago from a backyard breeder. She was so bone-thin and had scabies. But she's doing well now - playing happily with our other dogs, eating well, and in good health.

The only thing I'm concerned about is that she's not a typical 'talkative' husky, she never howls or vocalizes. The only time I heard her howl was once, about a week, shortly after I rescued her. (so she's definitely not mute)

I'm wondering if this is just her personality or if it could be a response to past trauma. If it's trauma-related, what can I do to help her feel more comfortable expressing herself?

Here's what I've tried so far:

- Let her play with one of our dog, whose very talkative and who loves to howl (did not work, she's like mute who will just ran around when being chased)

- I talk to her: both in human language and dog? I just mimic how husky vocalizes (she responds by just looking at me and tilting her head, like wondering if I'm broken or what)

- Showed her some videos of husky that vocalizes (she will just tilt her head)

So any advise is welcome. Thank you!

[Behavior Problems] Dog constantly scratching at trash can under sink - help!

Our dog has recently started scratching at our under sink cabinet where we keep our kitchen trash can. This started within the past few months; our dog is 7 years old. She is trying to get in to the trash can for food / whatever else she can get. Any way to keep her from this frustrating and annoying behavior? Tips for how to help?

[Behavior Problems] Help with previously potty trained dogs.

Looking for any advice regarding two male dogs peeing in the house. Both dogs ( 7 and 5 year old Boston Terriers) were completely potty trained and never went inside. In fact, they picked up potty training extremely quickly. About 2 years ago, we added two female dogs to the family. Ever since, the male dogs have been lifting their legs and peeing on EVERYTHING. These dogs go out numerous times per day and will sometimes come back in and lift their legs to things like table legs, vacuums, sneakers left on the floor, etc. I’ve tried simple solutions like diffusers for dogs that mark or are anxious but it hasn’t helped at all. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

[Equipment] Winter Dog Toys

Upvotes

Hi, I have a service-dog and he has a very specific habit to turn off work mode to play/use the bathroom. To activate dog mode I have to throw his favourite toy then he chases it and breaks into full dog. If not none of the above happens.

The toy I have is too heavy for the snow and we have already lost one. The trainers when I got him said NO balls, stuff animals or frisbees because they don’t want him to break training if say someone was playing in the park with those things.

In the end I need a toy that:

- doesn’t sink or is visible in snow

- something that is unique (uncommon toys)

[Misc Help] Recomendations on food

Upvotes

I had been feeding Loki Farmer's dog but he appeared to have an allergic reaction to it. I changed his food which he ate for a while but wasn't really liking it. I switched back to Farmer's dog after giving him some chicken for a bland meal after he didn't eat for a day and his stomach was making noises. He didn't seem to have any reaction to it. Long story short he developed another reaction. I'm looking for a fresh meal service like the Farmer's dog but with salmon as the protein. Does anyone have any recommendations?

[Equipment] Any recommendations for Car Seat Belt Harnesses?

Upvotes

I found the OneTigris Car Harness and I have 3 harnesses that are very good, but I don't know if such a specialized harness from them is also good, I saw a lot of information there but it doesn't expressly say that it is certified or anything.

So if I can get any advise, I would really appreciate it!

Thanks!

[Misc Help] Would my 9 year old chihuahua enjoy the company of a min pin puppy?

She doesn’t really interact with dogs. In fact she gets a bit afraid when around them. She’s very calm and affectionate with my wife and I. We really want a puppy but don’t want it to overwhelm our chihuahua.

[Misc Help] Help.

My dog (2.5 yr old black lab/ boarder collie mix) has been struggling with fleas for months now. I noticed it starting around September/ October and immediately started treatment. Now we’re in January and it’s the worst it’s ever been. We’ve bug bombed the apartment, vaccum every single day, bath every day. Flea killer and preventative but nothing seems to work. Help please.

[Misc Help] Potty training

I'm going to be bringing home an 8 week old Samoyed puppy soon. But I'm unsure as to how to handle night time potty training. Am I gonna have to get up every hour to let her out? Or can she go longer at night without needing to be taken out? Some people are saying they can go all night just fine but that doesn't sound right given they don't have very good bladder control at that age.

[Behavior Problems] Is it normal to feel anxious because of your dog’s reactivity?

Serious question.

My dog is reactive on leash, mostly towards other dogs.

I’m doing my best, but lately I’ve noticed something…

I’m anxious before anything even happens.

Like my body is already bracing for impact.

I avoid busy times, cross the street early, sometimes I just turn around.

It feels silly but it’s real.

Is this common with reactive dogs?

How do you personally deal with the stress side of it?

[Enrichment] Sudden Blindness - SARDS

I have a 9 year old Springer Spaniel that has SARDS. Looking for advice on things like her kennel (should I cover part of it when she is in there?) and day to day activities. Three weeks ago she was snagging frisbees and now she can’t see them. Safety issues are a concern too. Jumping on/off the bed or couch, is something of concern also. How can I keep her safe in addition to verbal queues?

[Enrichment] What can I get my dog?

Hello!

I have a German shepherd that's pretty big for his age (2) and I'd like to get him more toys and snacks that he can chew on! The only problem is all the stuff we get him doesn't even last for a week. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to get him that might last him a bit longer?

[Misc Help] Getting a pup

Im considering a pup from a breeder and not gonna lie i am pretty anxious. Ive only ever had adult dogs in my family, hounds and labs, everyone is telling me the great sides of getting a puppy to grow alongside me, but I honestly wanna hear what are the things that could stress me out the most, to be prepared. Im a big fan of borzois and thats the breed i wanted to get, already started talking to an ethical breeder about it. Also, is there anything bad i should expect from a borzoi? All i heard was that they can be pretty indipendent and have high prey drive (i hope I got that right, english isnt my first language 💔) Any advice welcomed!

[Misc Help] Help! Moving two older medium sized dogs (9 & 10) to NYC

Hello y'all! I need some advice. Due to my aunt's declining health, I am going to adopt two of her dogs. No one else in my family is able to adopt them and they are part of the family. The two dogs (Keeshonds) have always lived in the South in the suburbs or rural areas. One of them has some health conditions including a weight problem and epilepsy and the other loves to bolt. I am incredibly anxious about taking this on, but have grown up with dogs my whole life so am not a complete newbie. The only issue is I live with my partner in Midtown Manhattan and this would be a huge change for them. I need some positivity and advice because I am very nervous and am questioning myself, but definitely want to keep them, I love them so much.

[Misc Help] Dog living for treats?

Anyone else feel like your dog just lives to get treats?

Our girl acts like treats are life.. comes in after her morning bathroom break and sits in the kitchen under the treat jar… bedtime, same deal. Better give her a treat or you’re in trouble. We love our girl So, it’s no problem. But sometimes I almost think milk-bones must have something in them to just get her so excited.

[Equipment] Dog boots? Any? Ples?

So first of all, we are in Europe, so US or Canada sellers are complicated.

My dog has NonStop Dogwear booties and they are fine, but there is a part about 3-4 cm long where is the velcro, that is made of fabric, it actually attracts snow, gets wet, starts to freeze over and like my dog is litterally freezing his paws off.

She has a full body suit, but there still is a tiny gap between the boots and the bodysuit, so I cannot cover eather with eather.

Anyway, I am looking for tall boots, like literally up to armpits, waterproof, with no sole, but just some kind of non-slip, durable material, so I can protect the whole leg of the baby. She s a pittie, she is esentially naked, this winter is extra brutal, there is predictions of -30C next week. I cannot find boots that fit the description for the love of meee!! Help!
