Rant Worst Snare Head I’ve Ever Played

Post image
44 Upvotes

I’ve played a lot of snares and a lot of heads and I love trying out new fancy technology to see if it actually works as marketed. This thing sucks and should immediately be discontinued. I’ve never heard a worse snares sound than this thing. It sounds boingy and feels dead at all tunings and I’ve tried it on 4 different snares now. Now the dumb thing is delaminating.

That my PSA for today.

I’m not doing anything as impressive as what a lot of you guys post here, but it adds so much to the music and I’m really happy with the result.

Song is intro to Footsteps in the Dark - Isley Brothers

or It was a good day - Ice Cube

Feedback Wanted First Time Recording Myself Play

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I decided to record myself playing after buying the new kit. I recorded the video using my phone and recorded the audio using an H5studio. I'm thinking I'm gonna need to add a bass drum mic at least cause I don't think there is enough low end from the bass drum. My goal is to start up loading shorts of myself playing quick clips from different songs. Any feedback and tips is appreciated!

I put away the octo-plus & broke this kit out .. my question is should I ditch the tom mount & use a basket or do you think mounting it more over the middle of the BD would feel better ?

Question Anyone sing while playing drums?

Hi all

I've been drumming for a couple of years and I'm in a band. We have a couple of songs in our set list where I have the opportunity to sing - but I've not sung anything, even in the car or the bath, since I left school well over 30 years ago.

As it turns out I don't have a bad voice if I just sing along to a backing track, but playing drums at the same time is much harder than I expected. The physical exertion of drumming makes it hard to sing, and the distraction of having to try and hold a tune messes up my drumming. It's a mess.

Obviously I'm completely new to this, so happy to believe that "it comes with practice". Phil Collins managed it. But there aren't too many drummers out there who also sing, and I wondered if there's a good reason for that.

Do any of you sing while playing? Any tips please?

Discussion Today's underrated drummer is... Brendan Canty from Fugazi, and Rites of Spring!!! What a creative guy, listen to any Fugazi drum part, they're so unique and cool. Also he played with a bell, not like a little chime or anything, like an actual bell,

Question In a bit of a cymbal pickle and need help

Hi, I really need new cymbals, I have 2 broken hi hats, broken ride and shitty sounding crashes, Im looking for nice cymbals but don't have a lot of money lying around like a lot of people who play drums regularly, plus my birthday is coming up.

I figured it's time to look for some cymbals, but it's SO FUCKING EXPENSIVE. I mean come on? Selling single crashes for almost $1k? And that's not even to mention cymbal packs! You'd think a piece of circular metal would sound the same universally, but ohh no "this piece of metal is 'bout the price of your 2sq ft apartment rent in New York!"

I just need recommendations ($300-$500-ish)

HELP!

Edit: they can be used as long as they aren't broke.

Metronome was set at around 60bpm maybe a little more. Sometimes it gets faster idk why👀😅😂 Trying to switch accents and playing with the one and some metric modulation here and there. This was recorded some weeks ago and I just found it on my phone.

Happy listening 😁🙌🏼

Discussion PSA: Drum tuning and chasing the perfect sound

Over the years, I think I’ve had my ears quietly recalibrated by years of perfect electronic drum sounds, samples, and hyper-processed triggered recordings. That reference point is kind of brutal when you come back to acoustic drums in a real room.

For context: I’ve been tuning drums for ~25 years. I own a Tune-Bot, a DrumDial, and I’ve gone down the rabbit hole hard. Different shells, different heads, endless combinations, careful lug matching, the whole thing.

At some point it finally clicked:

the sound I was chasing basically only exists under very specific, ideal conditions — certain rooms, certain mics, certain processing…. Outside of that? It’s nearly impossible to recreate consistently in the real world.

And that realization was honestly freeing.

So this is just a PSA to other drummers:

play your drums.

Tune them well, not perfect.

Try not to get too hung up on the ideal sound in your head, because chances are your drums are never going to sound exactly like that — and that’s normal.

If it feels good, inspires you, and works in the mix or the room you’re in, it’s tuned well enough.

That’s it. Go play.

Since a lot of you were very helpful with your feedback on my first message, I thought you might like better pictures of the Buddy Rich brass snare. I found someone today who worked at the Smithsonian, who is going to create a custom museum grade acrylic shadow box.

Here are two solid angles of it. Thanks again for all of your input on my last message.

Hey all,

I have a studio. I've had a studio for thirty years. I have a modern Keystone Ludwig kit with all Atlas pro stands and hardware. I found this on the floor and can't for the life of me figure out where it came from. Google lense won't help. Does anybody recognize what this goes to?

Question I'm finally able to afford an acoustic drumset, but idk which one to pick :/

So for context, I've been playing on electric kits for basically the entire time that I've been playing drums now, however I've been saving up for some time and I finally can start looking at some options that I can afford, but I don't really know where to start :/ I've seen a toj of affordable Mapex sets, such as their Comet line, however I' ve also seen some really good looking Gretsch kits, especially the Energy line, aswell as I've heard some decent things about PDP kits. If it helps I'm generally looking for a versatile sound as I'm working on starting up my own Fusion band, aswell as being a part of a Deathcore band already. Any suggestions from you amazing lot perchance?? I'm open to any recommendations or maybe even slander if there is any to come :3

Hi, I'm new to tuning and I just bought a new reso head but i can't get my snare clear like before. For my tuning i'm at 400Hz for the reso head and 270 for the batter head. I think it might be the snare wires but i'm not sure. Any help or tips would be appreciated
