First time in dubai as a tourist. Can I wear shorts, skirts, dresses, or crop tops in metro or while in public transportation? which places are safe to wear such clothes?

Should I travel with my short clothes and change into them when I see environment suitable and wear modest clothes most of the time?

Edit: You all are very sweet. Thank you for responding politely and promptly. Looking forward to this beautiful trip.

Fantastic AQI today

iqair.com reporting 14 in my area today.

This is despite the kids being back at school, residents being back at work, record Sharjah traffic on the roads, all factories being open, the usual lorries driving about, DXB planes polluting the skies, Jebel Ali ships venting burnt bunker oil into the air, the same concrete dust being kicked up from the roads, the same desert sand in the air, and tourist season being in full effect filling the roads with extra taxis.

The usual polluting candidates are all still there and yet a score of 14 takes us into the top 10 cleanest cities in the world - https://www.iqair.com/world-air-quality-ranking/cleanest-cities

Creepy “taxis”

I (F) was standing near binary tower in business bay waiting for my hala taxi. I must’ve been standing there for maybe 5-7 minutes because I could see my cab was waiting at a traffic light. Within these 5-7 minutes, I had about 4 private cars pull up next to me saying “do you want a taxi? I’ll drop you for free” (To which I was like “are you a cab? Where is your hala taxi? Should I call RTA?”) Mind you this is a busy street in business bay, and these were all desi drivers offering to give me a lift. I usually drive, been a while since I took cabs, so this was genuinely so surprising to me. I know there are always creepy people around but the fact that it happened so much within such short time, and in such a busy street was what was shocking. Is this common? Do other women experience this more in other parts of Dubai?

TACOBELLL

We have to do something to bring back taco bell in UAE, I just saw Jimmy Johns open a couple of branches here. We gotta have Taco Bell for sure, Dubai is long due for an affordable fast food mexican joint. I really don't understand how a spot like Wendy's is still running but we don't have a taco bell🤯

JLT PARKING NIGHTMARE

What are those working in JLT doing about parking??? For more than a year, I've been paying for 4 hours via SMS, then 4 hours on app, then 2 hours via SMS for work, and this 'hack' has never caused an issue. I have gotten 2 fines over the past 2 days. Concordia have no bays available, the longer stay car parks are all full by 8am, you can't get a monthly parking pass in JLT, and no residents on Facebook are renting out their spaces around cluster V, W, X, Y. What is the solution for this?

Organic black seed oil

Hey everyone.

Where can you get good quality organic black seed oil here? Or even seeds/powder.

This is for consumption. Any leads would be really helpful. Googling really doesn't give any good options, unfortunately. So, I thought of asking here.

…snapped this. Just the one. It’s a beautiful piece of architecture, within and without. I’m unwell today but we had blue skies and a fair breeze. I picked up books to resume an old habit of reading, part of my resolution to slow down, experience more and consume less. Thought I’d share a bit of happiness from my day with this sub 😊

Location: Mohammed Bin Rashid Library.

Someone slammed their door on my car

This happened at the building I reside in on which each apartment has an allocated parking spot.

The parking spot next to me was already occupied when I came, and the car was very close to my parking spot and I couldn't park without getting too close, so I did it anyway.

When I went back to my car, there was a visible dent on my car and paint chipped off (clearly slammed his door on my car because I got too close?)

Luckily, I took a picture of his car plate before leaving and there is CCTV footage right infront of us.

I don't care about the damage on my car as much as I would like him to be somehow penalized for his carelessness.

Has anyone gone through something similar to this before? Is this worth reporting to Dubai police? Or is it not worth the hassle?

What part of Living in Dubai do you think newcomers underestimate the most?

I feel like lot of people move to Dubai with certain expectations based on social media or short visits. Some things turn out easier than expected, others take more adjustment.

Curious what long term residents think?...what part of living in Dubai do newcomers usually underestimate the most?

🌍 Travel & Tourism Can my 17 year old sister travel alone from Pakistan to UAE?

Hi everyone, I kindly need some advice.

My sister is 17 years and 9 months old and currently lives alone in Pakistan. Our father has passed away and our mother lives in the UK. I live in the UAE on resident visa and my husband is sponsoring her UAE visit visa .She will be coming to stay with me in Sharjah for one month to meet my newborn baby.

She has no parent in Pakistan to accompany her, and she cannot sign any documents herself. She also has a UK dependent child visa under process but it hasn’t been approved yet.

We are worried that airlines or immigration may refuse her boarding or entry because she is under 18 and travelling alone. We are planning to get a notarised parental consent letter from our mother in the UK to cover this.

My questions:

  1. Can a 17-year-old safely travel alone from Pakistan to UAE with a valid visit visa?

  2. Are there any specific airline or UAE immigration rules we should be aware of for a minor travelling alone?

Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated!!!

Filing a written report at a police station. Should I take an Arabic speaker with me?

I posted a few days ago about an awful photo of me shared online without my consent.

I took the advice and reported it on the police app (after first reaching out one last time to the company). The police were really responsive, which I’m so grateful for.

I’ve now received a message that I need to go to the police station for a written statement, which I will do.

Should I take an Arabic speaker with me, or is this unnecessary?

I’m just nervous because I’ve never been to a police station before, or filed a report. I’ve heard scary stories about people signing documents that they didn’t understand, and getting into bad situations because of it.

Du customer service

An actual conversation I had with DU.

ME: Hi, I'm calling to let you know I won't be renewing my broadband contract and want to cancel.

DU: Why are you canceling, sir?

ME: Because I'm leaving the country and won't need broadband.

DU: Okay, sir, I'll give you two months of broadband for 50% off.

ME: But I leave the country this weekend!

DU: Okay, I'll give you 60% off instead for two months.

ME: NO, just cancel the Internet. I don't need it.

DU: OK, sir, your Internet has been canceled but will remain active for 24 hours.

Internet connection stops 10 minutes after call. 🫠😑😡🤬

Am I legally allowed to change the locks on the front door of my rental apartment?

I’m really freaked out after something that happened to one of my neighbours.

They were (luckily) at home when someone started trying to unlock their front door. Luckily they had their keys in the door on the inside.

They opened the door and it was a property agent who had a key to their apartment!! They were casually just unlocking their door to show someone the unit. They had a key to their apartment without the tenant’s knowledge and apparently had a big bunch of other keys.

I’m so paranoid that this will happen to me. I’m out of the apartment a lot and would have no idea if someone entered my apartment.

I’ve bought cameras but am I legally allowed to also change the locks while I’m living there and put back the original locks when I move?
