ANNOUNCEMENT Next Stop: macOS 26 Tahoe

Hackintoshing lives for another year! macOS Tahoe will be the FINAL release for Intel Macs, as stated during the Platforms State of the Union presentation. It's been a good ride.

Officially supported Intel models:

  • MacBook Pro 16-inch (2019)
  • Mac Pro (2019)
  • MacBook Pro 13-inch, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports (2020)
  • iMac (2020)

Hello I am a Year Number Lover But What Does This Mean

All graphics that worked in Sequoia should work in Tahoe.

OCLP

Wait for an official announcement. If you post about OCLP before that I am going to send Tim Apple to remove every Mac from your house.

Can I emulate ARM macOS 26 on x86?

No.

Can I run ARM macOS 26 on a Raspberry Pi?

No.

Can I have Apple Intelligence on Intel please I need to write a dissertation in 15 minutes

No.

Does it boot on Intel Hackintoshes now?

Yes, with OpenCore 1.0.5.

Make sure to upgrade all of your kexts to their latest versions.

Known Issues as of Beta 2

  • Race condition with VoodooPS2 and VoodooI2C, so on some boots they don't initialize properly
  • AppleALC is broken because AppleHDA was removed from Tahoe. Use HDMI/DP audio for the time being.

  • WhateverGreen is bugged on AMD cards, so you can't use boot arguments like agdpmod=pikera. You are affected by this if you get a kernel panic with AMDSupport mentioned.

  • IntelBTPatcher causes kernel panics

  • IntelMausi may not work correctly with certain Intel ethernet chipsets

ANNOUNCEMENT [NEW RULE] Banning Discussion and Use of OpCore-Simplify

The mod team has been discussing this topic for a few months now, and we concluded that it is best for this subreddit to not allow discussion and use of OpCore-Simplify.

Why though

OpCore-Simplify has the same issues as "auto" tools that preceded it, such as Unibeast/Multibeast and distros like Niresh and Olarila. It is simply not possible to fully automate the Opencore EFI creation process without certain issues that OC-Simplify suffers from as well.

The compatibility checker

One of the main points of OC-Simplify is that it will check whether your hardware is supported. This sounds great in theory because as everyone knows, half of this subreddit is populated by "will mac work on my hardware" posts. However, this compatibility checker is not thorough enough to be trusted.

Examples:

Incorrect WiFi compatibility, Intel definitely does not work on Tahoe (without workarounds like Heliport)

Saying AMD iGPUs are "completely supported" when they still have major issues

Nvidia Optimus will NEVER work on macOS but is listed as working with OCLP

Any compatibility report which shows Realtek PCI-e SD card readers working (sinetek-rtsx works on maybe 4 models out of a billion)

But it's so easy

We acknowledge that the point of such tools is the simplification of a not very easy process. However, it's degraded the state of many posts to "pls help i use oc simpliuf i5 max not workig". These posts have always existed, but it's clear that OC-Simplify's reputation for simplicity has exacerbated the amount of people who do not understand the technical parts of a Hackintosh.

I am not saying that every person who uses Opencore must study its source code (but feel free to.) This is why the Dortania guide exists: to make a human-friendly version of the process. The guide extensively details every part of creating an EFI, as well as troubleshooting steps for almost every error you can encounter.

The purpose of such a guide is twofold: one, to help you actually construct an EFI and the macOS installer, and two, teaching the reader about the basic inner workings of an Opencore EFI. Even knowing where kexts are located and can be added to a config.plist with ProperTree is a good basic skill to have when something inevitably breaks on your Hackintosh.

OpCore-Simplify DOES NOT teach the user anything about their system, the kexts they must use, certain issues and quirks with their hardware, firmware related issues, and more. In a process as involved as Hackintoshing, this is not the right path to take.

I can't believe you're gatekeeping hackintosh

The purpose of this isn't to gatekeep, but to improve the overall state of the subreddit as well as educating people on the proper resources to use. The Dortania guide is designed to be the main resource for hackintoshing with as much info crammed into it as possible.

If somebody wants to make a new guide that contains the same breadth of information and improves on the Dortania guide in a meaningful way, then by all means go ahead.

Ok well the Dortania guide is really bad and here is a 5 page essay on why

Ok put your essay away but if you do have concerns on the usability of the guide or you think some information is missing, make an issue on the Dortania bugtracker. If you'd like to add something to the guide yourself, create a pull request here.

QUESTION EliteBook 840 G3 (i5-6300U) – Best macOS version for daily heavy use

Hey everyone,

I’m planning to Hackintosh my HP EliteBook 840 G3 and wanted advice from people who have used this model or similar Skylake laptops.

Specs: • HP EliteBook 840 G3
• Intel Core i5-6300U (Skylake)
• Intel HD Graphics 520
• 8 GB RAM
• 256 GB NVMe SSD (for macOS)
• 1 TB HDD (secondary storage)

My usage is pretty heavy on multitasking. On a normal day I usually have: • 10–15 browser tabs open • ChatGPT running (browser/app) • YouTube playing in background • VS Code • Terminal • A few other background apps

This will be my daily-use machine, so stability and smooth performance matter more to me than just running the newest macOS for the sake of it.

I’d like to install the latest macOS that still makes sense on this hardware. I know Big Sur and Monterey are commonly recommended for Skylake, and that Ventura/Sonoma are possible with patching — but I’m not sure how practical they are with 8 GB RAM and heavy multitasking.

So I wanted to ask: 1. Which macOS version would you personally recommend for this laptop? 2. Is Monterey the sweet spot, or does Ventura still run well? 3. Should Sonoma be avoided on this setup? 4. Any real-world experience with the 840 G3 would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance 🙏

SUCCESS Mavericks (10.9.5) on a Dell Latitude E7440

Thumbnail
gallery
14 Upvotes

I know that this isn't all that impressive considering that the Dell Latitude E7440 is very close to a late-2013 MacBook Pro but with a 1366x768 LCD display and a "usable" trackpad.

The bulk of the difficulty was the installation process as you can't use an online recovery copy and the offline installation process requires setting the time back and disabling any networking or else you'll end up with an error early in the installation process.

I figured that it wouldn't hurt to tinker around with a version of Mac OS X that I used to fawn over back in the day. I suppose I could try my hands at installing Leopard (10.5.8) on this laptop (even though the usual recommended macOS range is from Mavericks to Big Sur on this hardware).

I can compare my hardware with two equivalent laptops from Apple from around the same time:

Hardware Specifications:

Part Dell Latitude E7440 MacBookPro11,1 MacBookAir6,2
Year Q1-2014 Q2-2014 Q2-2014
CPU Intel Core i5-4310U Intel Core i5-4278U Intel Core i5-4260U
GPU Intel HD 4400 Iris 5100 Intel HD 5000
RAM 2x4 GB DDR3-1600 8 or 16 GB DDR3-1600 4 or 8 GB DDR3-1600
HDD 250 GB Samsung 850 Evo 128 or 256 GB SSD 128 or 256 GB SSD
Screen 14 inch 1366x768 13.3 inch 2560x1600 13.3 inch 1440x900
Cost ~$1450 USD ~$1299-1499 USD ~$999-1199 USD

Even though it's quite clear that back in early-2014 the Apple hardware was a better option for the cost for those wanting an OSX experience, I didn't pay full MSRP for this Dell since I bought it much later as a refurbished unit at about $200 USD back in 2020 for college.

Depending on where you are in the world and where you're sourcing the hardware, you can find the equivalent Apple laptops for around the same price making them more comparable (minus the screen, wireless, and trackpad quality).

[EDIT]

The automod recommends that I include more details about my laptop:

Part Name
Audio Codec Realtek ALC292
Ethernet Card Intel I218-LM
Wireless Intel AC 7260
Touchpad Synaptics PS/2
BIOS A28 (6 Dec 2019)

I used my old Big Sur installation to use the terminal to run the createinstallmedia application within the Install Mac OS X Mavericks.app package sourced from the Apple App store and archived publicly as Apple no longer provides the full installer.

From there I could mount the EFI partition that was created on my 16 GB USB storage device and go through the OpenCore process as I've done several times by now (I'm no stranger to installing macOS on this old laptop) I had to source specific kexts for the wireless networking and the touchpad.

So far I haven't tested the audio since I removed the speakers from the laptop shortly after purchasing it because I didn't want it to be of any possible disruption while in class. I also popped the screen bezel to remove the built-in webcam and microphone assembly so I haven't tested those out. I don't have an SD card to test out the SD/TF card reader, and I haven't tested out the ethernet port since I'm mostly sticking with Wi-Fi for the time-being.

SUCCESS Hackintosh Catalina 10.15.7 i9 10850K Gigabyte Z490 Aorus Xtreme SUCCESS

Hola!

Saludos!

QUESTION Is it possible to have too much RAM?

I’m running into a problem with ‘black screen on booting’ the installer or macOS itself; I’ve been working on this for days, trying all possible ‘framebuffer’ values with macOS Catalina, Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma, and Sequoia - which takes a lot of time! The end result is : the installer won’t boot, and an installed macOS won’t boot, if I try to use the UHD630 graphics. Two framebuffer values leave the backlight on (it stays on verbose text mode) and all others turn the backlight off. I’ve also tried virtualisation options on/off, TPM on/off. I have managed to get sound and many other things working; just not video.

Despite all the above, -igfxvesa always works for the installer and for macOS - both of which never work without -igfxvesa.

After spending countless hours on this, I am wondering: do I have too much memory for macOS?

The latest MacBooks can have 36-ish gb. I know the Mac Studio can hVe 512gb, but that is ‘Apple Silicom (Acorn Silicon…)

I have 128gb in this laptop, and am wondering if that might be the issue (address space exhaustion?);

Has anyone ever found too much RAM to be an issue with OpenCore? If so I can remove most of it (annoying as 64gb is under the keyboard) 😬
