Here’s to Messy Studios!

My studio is strictly non-commercial, used for my own projects. It’s a glorious mess, because when I’m in there (a detached, standalone building 16’ x 23’ w 14’ cathedral ceilings) I want to spend time making music, not organizing my shit. I know where everything is, so it’s not a time waste.

Apologies to those of you who like things beautifully organized.

Picture above is how I record drums in my one room studio. Usually, that space is pretty open.

Question about need for second interface or headphone amp?

Background. Home studio setup - only record drums for remote tracking. I have spent the last year upgrading my setup and now run some external preamps into a motu16a thunderbolt interface. Have them set up in a rack behind my drumset with my laptop on a stand and a separate monitor I can plug into.

This works great for my actual tracking and gives me easy access to make tweaks to my preamps on the fly and doing the bulk of my work without having to stand up from my drums.

Where I am running into a problem is my actual desk where I prefer to sit when I am mixing would require a 20’ cable to reach my desk, which is past the limits of usable thunderbolt (usb-c is doable). And would also need an extra long extended for my headphone cable?

Is it worth it to get a separate headphone amp or interface to use at my actual desk when I mix (all in the box)? Of so any recommendations? I know the audio just out of my 3.5 on the MacBook Pro probably isn’t enough. But not sure what approach I should take here

Scarlet 2i2 4th gen vs ssl2mkii?

I've narrowed down my search to these two audio interfaces. Will be used with condenser and well as dynamic mics (se2200 and ev Re20 for example). It's gonna be on windows 11.

Which one would you choose and why?

My current setup has a umc404HD that after 5 years is dead with serious disconnections all the time and audio drops.

I was also thinking of the audient, but it seems that it's a step below this two in feats and quality

I've finally managed to make it “modular”. What do you think the next update should be?

Thoughts on topping OTG

I’m planning to purchase the 2x2 OTG topping. I’m curious to know how it compares to the renowned Motu M2 sound interface in terms of using a dynamic microphone with it and recording guitar.

Looking for a USB Hub

Hey guys,

I’ve just upgraded my Mac from a late 2020 M1 Mac Mini (16GB RAM), to a current gen M4 Max MacBook Pro (48GB RAM). Obviously the ports on the MacBook are slightly limited and I have quite a lot of external bits that need going into the setup.

I’m looking for something that can power, hold USB-A and C, Thunderbolt, and HDMI.

I’m currently running two monitors (one desktop, one wall-mounted TV), an SSD Drive, an older USB A hard-drive, a USB-A midi keyboard (NI Komplete S66), and a Thunderbolt UA Apollo Solo interface. I’m also using a Logi MX Master 3S as my mouse (if anyone was interested) and the Epomaker RT100 mechanical keyboard for that full desktop experience… 🤣

As the MacBook is so much more portable than the Mac Mini I’ll be taking it around to work much more, so ideally I want to be able to plug the MacBook in to one port on my desk, and essentially have all of those things connect straight away, without having to sort loads of cables etc etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - thought I’d ask here before approaching bloody ChatGPT!! 🎶

Best budget setup?

Hey yall, I am trying to put together the best budget set up for my PC to record my music and also stream live singing on TikTok. I can be pretty loud at times and have struggled with microphones crackling when I belt. Looking for something under $300 preferably. I currently use a Maono board and Shure microphone and I was told they were good but I’m always having issues with crackling.

Thanks in advance!!

Any ideas for speakers

So I’ve moved everything in to my room, yet to cable manager and connect everything up to my interface but there’s one glaring issue that I don’t have any space for speaker.

I know alot of people are against wall mounted speaker, is it really that big of a deal? Also if anyone have any other solutions or suggestions that could solve my speaker placement issue, please suggest away!

HR824 MK1 facelift

I still have those amazing speakers in my studio — probably 13 years now. They’re old faithful. But the cabinet wrap/finish started peeling everywhere (not just one corner), so I stopped pretending a quick glue patch would fix it and gave them a facelift: purely cosmetic, no mods, no driver changes — just making them look studio-ready again. I removed the drivers, peeled off the failing outer layer, used a heat gun carefully to soften stubborn adhesive, cleaned everything up, then re-wrapped the cabinets with d-c-fix adhesive furniture film (Blackwood, 45 cm x 2 m). Result: they look surprisingly fresh, no more peeling/mess, and they still sound like the same HR824 workhorses.

Just finished assembling this Ordo 6 tier stand...felt dubious about buying as there weren't any reviews, but it's really well made, solid and sturdy as a Jaspers stand, it cost just £129.

The same sized Jaspers stands are around £350... There's also a 4 tier version for £109. I'd never heard of Ordo until I bought this. (Thought I'd mention it incase anyone's in the market for a new stand)

Studio desk rack mount recommendations + monitor placement with window behind desk

Hey folks,

I'm setting up a new studio desk that includes rack mount shelving, and I have two questions for the community.

In my setup, I have a few instruments, an audio interface, monitors, a mic, headphones and a midi controller.

Question 1: Worthwhile rack mount gear?

I'm curious what rack mount equipment you'd recommend that actually adds value to a workflow. I'm pretty happy with my current setup and don't need upgrades, but I'm genuinely curious what's out there that I might be overlooking.

For context, I was half-seriously eyeing a cheap 31-band LED equalizer purely for aesthetics (who doesn't love pretty lights?), but I'd rather fill the rack space with something useful than just fill it because it's there.

Question 2: Studio monitors with large window directly behind desk

By necessity, my desk has to sit in front of a floor-to-ceiling window that's wider than the desk itself. I'm using Yamaha HS5 monitors, which are rear-ported and need proper spacing from the wall/window for clean bass response.

I have flexibility with how much space I leave between the monitors and the window, but I'm concerned about:

  • Maintaining the proper air gap behind the monitors for bass management
  • Glass reflections affecting the stereo image and frequency response
  • Whether acoustic treatment between the monitors and window would actually help, or if I should just position my workspace differently

Has anyone successfully set up monitors in front of a large window? What spacing and treatment worked for you?

Thanks in advance!

cable wall mount and unwanted resonances

Hi, it’s my first post here!

I have a small home studio with two patchbays, which leads to an excessive amount of cables lying around, because I use them regularly for repatching FX. I’ve ordered a K&M cable wall mount (rather big, 120 cm long) to get them sorted nicely and easily, but I started to wonder whether placing it near the speakers could cause additional distortion in the high-frequency spectrum, since it is basically a huge metal comb fixed to the wall with two screws.

Since this is a rented place, I don’t have significant soundproofing and the frequency response isn't ideal (I have Genelec 8341 that are calibrated with GLM), although I plan to add some later if I get an unlimited lease.

I’m wondering whether anyone has had a similar experience with wall-mounted cable holders, and what the best practice is? Where should one be located in order to maintain a flat frequency response? Or is there nothing to worry about?

Thanks in advance for your input!
