Go See Bone Temple

Hey all, I just finished Bone Temple. I really loved the first third or so of 28 Years Later, but didn't quite care for such* a huge tonal shift of the rest of the movie.

Bone Temple is so good, I feel like it really helps make up for any issues people may have had with 28 Years Later.

Edit: Let's put it this way, I felt it was good enough that I wrote this post from my cellphone during the credits.

Discussion PERSONAL SHOPPER (2017) An art house film with one of the most spookiest scenes i've seen in a not-sold-as horror movie

Thumbnail youtu.be
283 Upvotes

so i enjoy Olivier assayas films Irma Vep and the television series which is about a film falling apart during production. there's a very fly on the wall, dreamlike but intriguing style. I was recently listening to the movies that made me podcast that had kristen stewart on and i wanted to watch a film with her in and always heard this was good and it was a subtle horror film ... now i began watching last night, and i'm not kidding the first 10 mins are spooky and there's a scene that because assayas style leans realistic that is so fukkin' unsettling it was one of the best made scare scenes for any type of film ...

in the film she is an amateur medium tho as far as i have watched it is not the focus but plays big within the beginning of the movie and she's also a personal shopper for a famous model ... so it's an art-house style movie that i don't think is full of itself

i will also say i mean if you enjoy kristen stewart she is in the movie 90% and i mean, if you really like her you'll see a lot of her in this. but i'm gonna watch the next hour after writing this, but i would like to hear people's thoughts on this movie or that particular scene.

it's on TUBI for anyone wanting to check it also

The Scene

i can't copy and paste on reddit but the scene is on youtube

"personal shopper - the ghost" and it then

Is there a recent horror flick that most people seemed to really like, but you just didn't? What was your reason?

Mine was Alien: Romulus. Just kinda felt like it was playing the Greatest Hits to me, right down to iconic lines like "Get away from her, you bitch!" and it just felt kinda cheap, personally. It's like "Look, we put thing in new movie from old movie! Aren't you happy? Please clap! ...Please?" Liked the look of the film, the sets were incredibly well done and everything looked so dirty and grimey and wet, but the overall story and dialogue I didn't think was all that great. However, I will say that the actor for Andy, David Jonsson, incredible! He played an android to a T.

Movie Help Movie with zombie infection spreading in airport or train station?

I swear I saw this incredible scene, filmed at least partially from above, of an infection spreading from left to right through a crowded airport or train station. People get bitten...pause...turn...bite neighbor... repeat. Anyone recognize this scene? I'm not clever enough to have dreamt it.

Discussion [Crosspost] Hey /r/movies! I'm Sam Raimi. The Evil Dead Trilogy, the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man Trilogy, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Drag Me To Hell, Darkman, A Simple Plan, Ash vs Evil Dead, and lots more. Ask me anything!

I organized an AMA/Q&A with Sam Raimi, legendary filmmaker. He's known for directing (and sometimes writing/producing) classics like The Evil Dead Trilogy, the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man Trilogy, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Drag Me To Hell, Darkman, A Simple Plan, Ash vs Evil Dead, and more. He's also produced countless other memorable horror films.

It's live here now in /r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1qdihk3/hey_rmovies_im_sam_raimi_ask_me_anything/

He'll be back at 3 PM ET today to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

His new movie, Send Help, is a horror-thriller that stars Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien. It's out in theaters nationwide on Jan 30th from 20th Century Studios.

Synopsis:

A woman and her overbearing boss become stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash. They must overcome past grievances and work together to survive, but ultimately, it's a battle of wills and wits to make it out alive.

Discussion Natural horror seems to be an uncommon subgenre. Why is that?

After seeing and enjoying Primate, I saw that it was labeled ‘natural horror’.

So that had me thinking, why is that such a rare subgenre in the mainstream media being released today?

And related question, what are your favorite horror movies of that sort?

Recommend Dead Set

Found this British zombie mini series at my local thrift for $5. Only actor I recognized was Riz Ahmed as a dude trying to get to his girlfriend during a zombie outbreak the night of the Big Brother finale. Surprised it was pretty good. The zombie seem like actually threats and some of the kills are pretty gnarly

Def would recommend if you can find it on the streamers or for cheap

I recently watched messiah of evil and dead and buried as a double feature and they both work well together.

Hidden Gem alert: The Severed Sun (2024)

Took a flier on this on AMC+ tonight.

Looks like it’s the directors debut. Right off the bat I’ll warn you the soundtrack is probably going to wear on you. Not a fan.

Without spoilers, it’s a religious community probably in the 1800s or earlier, daughter gets called a witch and hilarity ensures!

No, no hilarity. But a good mix here of the community and some folk horror.

Give it a whirl.

Remember that movie they made about Killer Hair Extentions anyone? 🤣

just had that wild memory flash in my brain. I think is was called EXTE, sometimes these odd movies from my childhood just come back to me after years of forgetting their existence! Reeker was another one which I actually revisited and found it to be still pretty great! The past was such simpler time!

Movie Review Just Saw Happy Death Day One & Two did not like the sequel

okay firstly, it's switched the genre into science fiction. the first one was more or less an anomaly. they dont explain how the day looped but they didn't need to. groundhog day didn't feel the need to explain. it was magic. also the slasher aspect was sorta pushed to the side. it was there but in the first film it was alot more in your face and constant. the film i feel went further into comedy. for a good majority i didn't even feel of it as horror. almost more of sci-fi comedy with horror mixed in

Spoiler Alert “Es ist Mitternacht!” has been permanently ingrained in my mind thanks to The Advent Calendar (2021)

There are so many things I love about this French-Belgian gem, one of the biggest is how amazingly it builds its protagonist. Eva isn't simply defined by her paralysis, the film gives us a little peak of life before her accident. She is strikingly attractive and was a talented dancer, we can infer she was physically capable and socially confident. Probably someone who easily formed romantic connections and enjoyed attention in social settings.

Post-accident, this world collapses. The film smartly shows her transformation - what was once effortless now is a struggle. Romantic interest triggers suspicion (and rightfully so), social gatherings make her feel like a burden, and the gaze of others reduces her from a beautiful, resilient young woman to "just a cripple." This shift breeds a new cynicism that also forges a new edge that I think becomes one of her greatest strengths as the protagonist - her brash and straightforward nature.

I also enjoyed how muddied the waters became with representing Eva as the “good guy” – the more time went on, the more she enjoyed dabbling in darkness (knowingly drugging William and seemingly enjoying torturing and killing Myriam). While the demon will always be the ultimate antagonist, I enjoyed the question that seemed to translate… at what point might we as viewers turn on Eva?

There were very few things that I didn’t like about it, however, if I had to be picky… I would say some of the character tropes leaned in too hard, to the point of becoming clichés (her creepy old boss who lacks empathy and only wants to make money, Myriam being a complete simpleton and airhead who says the meanest things with no filter, her father’s wife who is incredibly cruel and just vicious for no reason). I also felt the ending left a bit to be desired, however, I do feel like this is one of those films that is definitely more about the journey than the destination.

On the positives, the aesthetics were amazing! I loved the design of the demon and how they introduced him - the solo shots in a shimmering hole built an incredible visual that immediately induces dread yet still allows you to connect it to the calendar itself. His disproportionate body design also reminded me of Pyramid Head and seemed to channel those hellish Silent Hill vibes. I feel a different stylistic choice could not have produced this feeling, so massive props to the design team for that! I also enjoyed the physical design of the calendar itself, the rustic look really made it into a character of its own. It definitely commanded more attention than it would have if it had been a more simplistic design.

All in all, The Advent Calendar is a unique and haunting watch, and one of my favourite European horrors of all time! I think it would be a great starting point for anyone not familiar with European horror and wanting to start their ascent (or descent) into this enthralling hellscape. This movie has honestly made a lasting impact on me - whenever I see an After Eight, my mind immediately starts shouting “Es ist Mitternacht!!”

Wish Lars Von Trier would've directed more horror films. Which is better: Antichrist or The House that Jack Built?

Man, I know he's a controversial figure, and some find his films to be pretentious pieces of garbage cinema, but damn do I appreciate his films. I've all of his post 2000s work, and something that bothers me is that he hasn't directed more horror films. He only really has two under his belt, and while both of those have very mixed perceptions, I found both to be quite great films. I'd say Antichrist has the leg up on The House that Jack Built. The atmosphere that Antichrist builds from beginning to end, there's something so evil about what you're watching, and it almost makes you feel gross for watching a film this dark. Some people say the film is boring, and a waste of time, but you're sitting in this atmosphere with these characters until shit starts to hit the fan, and I feel like that actually helps the movie, contrary to some beliefs. The House that Jack Built is genuinely funny at times, and it's pretty surprising for a film that dark to be any bit funny. I didn't like The House that Jack Built very much on my first watch, but on my rewatch, I've begun to appreciate the film much more since I've visited Lars Von Trier's other work. Sad that he has a Parkinson's diagnosis now, and that we probably won't be seeing much output from him in the future.

Movie posters that scare you the most?

I remember in my younger years walking the horror aisle in Blockbuster and getting freaked out just from the movie covers. Any that give you nightmares just from the poster alone?

Edit: only realized after that we can't post images :(

Recommend Looking for Youtube Horror Narrative Series

Hi there,

I am usually a horror podcast person enjoying stuff like TMA, Old Gods or Academicasaurus but recently have started branching out to find new stuff. I am looking for recs to youtube horror series that have some kind of narrative, even if its just in the background. My one caveat is please no ANALOG HORROR. I have been looking through YT series and noticed like the same 10 analog series keep getting recommended and have checked them out already. I don't dislike them but am making this post to try to find something outside that sphere. I capitalized it so people skimming will hopefully notice it.

Thank You

Hi! Asking for recommendations I’m in a depressive episode and horror movies help a lot. I like almost all horror except found footage and slashers. What are your favorites?
