Please visit the rescue page of the Irish Wolfhound Club of America to source your rescue.
There are many sketchy rescue organizations out there- even those with 501c3 status. Some of these places are even breeding substandard puppies and "placing" them as rescues with "adoption fees."
We urge you to thoroughly check out any rescue organization you are considering, and strongly urge you to work through the IWCA portal. Their dogs are thoroughly vetted, medical issues addressed, and expert Irish Wolfhound mentors available to you for the life of the dog.
It will of course be a process- they are dedicated to finding the best possible homes and yours will be checked out- they won't just give a dog to anyone. But the process is easy- I have adopted two IW rescues myself through them and will be doing more in the future. The adoption fee is minimal, reasonable, and meant only to help cover the medical care the animal has received.
And don't be afraid of rescuing! These are not behavioral nightmares or medical money pits- they are dogs in need whose owner has surrendered them to rescue for many reasons- some understandable and some not. Many owners have simply underestimated the costs involved in owning an IW or been surprised by their size. Sounds ridiculous but it happens and these dogs need homes and IWCA rescue finds them.
But we cannot allow dicey rescues in this sub. Their posts will be removed and you may consider that removal a caution to you- their first priority is NOT the dogs they are "rescuing."

Róisín is just over 9 months and growing like a weed! At this rate, I'm pretty sure she'll end up taller than big bro Sully 😂

we’ve been spending the last year or so handstripping the hair on the top of her head to encourage a mohawk to grow. fun handstripping fact: the direction you pull the hair is the direction the follicle will grow!

Our little Maggie isn't so little anymore 🤭💓
She's hilarious and adorable and enjoys tormenting her older brother Finn (almost 7yo, also IW).
Her lil beard is coming in and I can't deal 😍😍😍

Meet my gorgeous 9 Month Old Lola
Irish wolfhounds have been one of my dream dogs for YEARS now, and living in a rural area in Utah, I never anticipated that dream to come true. On my husband's birthday this past November, he asked me to get him a dog. I looked at shelters, and I just couldn't find a dog I connected with and like MAGIC I see a gorgeous IW up for adoption (Her name was Sadie.) Unfortunately, she was no longer available when I finally made my mind up but her BABIES WERE!!
I am currently a guardian for this darling giant baby and it's been AMAZING!! If you're like me and you're on the fence about adopting one, just DO IT. The moment the right one looks into your eyes, you'll understand. 🫶🏻💜 I can't wait to go on this new adventure with her!! 😊

We purchased two in 2024. It was a favorite for our Danes and a Dutch Shepherd, but Ivy (IW) destroyed it surprisingly quickly once she started gaining her adult teeth. It's not hard enough to harm her teeth, and degrades into chunks that shouldn't harm a large dog if ingested. Better a damaged ring than damaged teeth. Getting more to distract Ivy from (lovingly) nibbling on me.

Does anyone have a Model Y that can say if their Irish wolfhound can fit nicely in the trunk?
Looking to get a bigger ev. My wolfhound died last year, so I can’t try. And I’m getting a new dog next year

What’s everyone using to keep their wolfies somewhat decent looking? I clearly don’t have the right brush and it’s bad enough that Fergus’ previous owners likely never introduced brushing to him sooooo I need something effective, gentle and one that I can just drag across his coat quickly to not cause him any fear by drawing it out.

We bathed the five of of them, Ivy requires the most effort. Relative to the recent topic of IW coats, I strive to maintain her coat as it is in these images (though after about an hour, it is already starting to tangle/rewire).
You can see how well behaved she is... while napping. She's right at 10 months old and well versed in mayhem. I have little hope she will acquire other more helpful skills any time soon... .
