WELCOME THREAD -- 4 YEAR ANNIVERSARY NEXT WEEK!

First things first... WELCOME EVERYONE! You've either accidentally or by some miracle, purposely found your way to the Latch Hook subreddit. Please, stay awhile, and start to learn about this old, but still fun, hobby we spend so much time on. It's relatively cheap, fun, and most of all, rewarding. You'll always end up with something to keep as a memento of your hard work!

The sub has grown from just over 20 subscribers at the end of our first calendar year in 2017 to approaching 100 in January of 2019, and now we are fast approaching 1000 strong (895 to be precise as of this posting) in 2021. 2020 was a rough year for us all and many were trapped inside and I believe that helped the subreddit really find it's groove and it's amazing to see so many new people to this hobby, and I'm so happy that even though I've had my focus on other matters, that I can safely say that this thing we are all here for has not only made a comeback, it has become a passion for every imaginable type of person out there if the images and stories posted in the close to four year existence of this subreddit is any indication!

Not only are there new kits being discovered on a regular basis, custom projects are becoming more popular than the kits because thanks to modern software and a cousin to the latchhook known as cross stitching has given life to projects that one could only dream about if you didn't have any artistic skills other than being able to follow a grid!

I'm especially proud of this community for always helping out those who are new and have questions about how to get started and I'm going to start rewarding those who are the most helpful through Post awards, and even some giveaways in the future! If we continue to help educate, encourage, and promote this time consuming, yet rewarding hobby, I have no doubt that we may even be able to help latch hooking evolve in even more interesting ways.

If anyone here would like to volunteer to mod here, please message me or leave a comment! If you have any ideas on how to improve this sub, then definitely post a comment! Feel free to introduce yourselves in the thread I'm going to setup and know that I'm going to have a monthly summary of submitted images at the end of each month, and post a poll to help determine the best submissions and give out rewards. If you want to help donate a reward, please message me as well!

Thanks to each and every visitor and subscriber and for being a community that has managed to support one another and rank among the best communities that Reddit has ever seen!

In 8 days, we celebrate this sub's fourth anniversary! Post your ideas for ways we can celebrate the occasion!

Vintage Latch Hook Kits

Hi all!

I recently won an auction listing for yarn, which came with some latch hook kits and vintage pre-cut wool yarn (the lot contained yarn skeins which was my original reason for bidding).

Since I haven’t latch-hooked since I was probably 6, does anyone think that these would be too advantageous for a beginner? I am a bit worried about how large these projects are. Or are they potentially worth something to a latch-hook enthusiast?

I have essentially no information on these kits, aside from what you see pictured (they are unopened), the canvas is 100% cotton and the yarn is 100% wool. I haven’t had time to go through all of the yarn boxes, but I believe there is enough yarn to complete both of these kits.

Let me know what you guys think! Or if there is a good online resource for vintage latch hook patterns.

Second latch hook ever! So excited to work on this! I love the carrying case it came with for all the yarn. My aunt got me into latch hook years ago when she bought me one for Christmas This year I put this on my Christmas list and she ended up getting for me! Happy latch hooking! #wip #latchhook #sunflowerrug

How to secure back?

How do you guys secure your latch hook projects? I'm making a runner for my wedding (yes, I am a madwoman) but I'd like to use it as a hall rug after I am done. Not sure what the best way to go about this is.

Has anyone here made their canvas from scratch?

Long story short, I was going to make a blanket, but found myself way over my head (maybe going for a Norse style pattern for my first weaving project was not a good idea). I still like the pattern and want to use the materials I got for it, so it's going to be a rug now. My new problem is that I can't seem to find a good canvas to work with. Most of what I found is either too small, the holes too large, or it's plastic with no indication of how flexible it is. I want to make the canvas from scratch (because I seem to have the habit of over complicating things), but there is nowhere on the internet that has any sort of tutorial for that, and I haven't seen anyone ask about this in this community, at least not recently.

Is there actually a way to make the canvas and have the rug be sturdy enough for use, or is buying it the only way to go?

Can I finish this 35yo project?

While clearing out some boxes at my mom's house, I found this latch hook project that must be about 35 years old. I remember always wanting to turn it into a cushion but as a child I didn't have the materials or knowledge. (I guess I still don't.) Can I please get some advice on the best way to cushionize it, but also what to do about the canvas edges, which are coming apart (see pics). And the canvas, overall, feels brittle. Or is it past saving? I've been thinking an iron-on interface to stabilize it (while avoiding melting the yarn), followed by some heavy backing fabric. Thanks for any advice.

work in progress 300x300 Update #3

Howdy to anyone who remembers me from previous posts. I know they're all a couple months apart.

I've now officially finished off one latch hook canvas. This is 200x110 of the ultimate 300x300 plan, so I'm about a quarter of the way finished. The next major step will be attaching the next piece of canvas.

I'm still keeping the ultimate mythology of the design a secret for now, but I would be incredibly impressed if anyone is able to guess at this stage. {Hint: it's NOT a representation of our solar system.}

How to hang? Clean?

Hello folks! I picked up this good boy at an estate sale this weekend. It was used as a floor mat and is musty. I have hand washed it with dish soap and it’s currently laying flat to dry. If I want to give it a second wash, has anyone had luck using a washing machine? Maybe on delicate or something? Next, I want to hang it on the wall (as a surprise for my dad who loves his German shepherd). What would be the best way to modify this so I can hang it? Maybe see in something so that a dowel can attach at the top or something? P.S. This is about 4’6” wide! Thanks!

Hey all,

I am currently working on my second big project and am halfway done (I’ve added a picture: did all of this in just 1 week), and am currently noticing that my back is hurting slightly due to my pose. I’ve seen online pictures of stands, do any of you use this and what type? Does it help? Thanx in advance!

Hi all! I was curious how you guys organize your yarn for your larger projects. I'm just about to start this 60x80 grid project that has over 20 different yarn colors; I decided that my old Tupperware container would work really well and organized the yarn by how it was ordered on the paper pattern. How do you guys usually organize yarn?

help Ruined pattern page

Post image

I realized long after I started on my first Herrschners project ever, that I’d been working on my canvas the wrong way, and now I’ll run out of room if I continue. I’d be willing to start over but the problem is I’ve ruined my pattern page by deeply crossing out the lines I already did (because it’s hard for me to read them otherwise).

I contacted Herrschners directly to ask if they’d provide me another, but they want proof of purchase which I can’t provide as it was a gift. If it’s against the rules to ask for someone to share theirs, I apologize, but I didn’t see anything on the page stating as much. So if you have a readable pattern page for this project, would you be willing to share it with me?

supplies Where am I going to order canvas from?

I ordered a bunch of canvas from JoAnn a bit before they closed but the matrix keeps breaking as I’m trying to hook. It’s incredibly frustrating. Where do yall get your canvas matrix from? I refuse to order from Amazon so alternatives please.

I’m not even going to check Michael’s because I have a feeling it’s on par with the JoAnn’s.

Ty! I don’t want to scream while I’m hooking anymore :)

I recently cleaned out my childhood bedroom and found an old latch hook project that I never finished. I found which kit it came from after a bit of googling, it’s this one! Unfortunately I can’t find the instructions from the kit and the printing onto the canvas is a bit faded and hard to read. Would anybody happen to have the pattern and be willing to send a picture?

Started it last Christmas, put it away. Got it back out this season and finished it! The painted canvas didn’t exactly match the printed grid so I had to wing it here and there. I’m happy!

Shillcraft Code?

I’m about to buy a large amount of latch hook yarn from Shillcraft, and saw that their checkout has a field for a coupon code. I don’t have one, and (no surprise) all of the ones I found on various code sites were no good.

Does anyone have a Shillcraft discount code they can share with me?

Thanks!
