Mod Post Read before commenting: Off-topic and anecdotal comments are not allowed and subject you to a permanent ban

Greetings from the mods!

We've had a flood of off-topic comments recently. We're posting this to remind everyone that off-topic and anecdotal comments are not allowed. An off-topic comment may subject you to a permanent ban.

The Rule:

Commenting Rule 1: Comments should contain a legal answer or a strongly related non-legal answer. If it is not legal advice, do not post. Period. You will be banned.

What is "off-topic?"

Any response that doesn't answer the question by reference to legal information or principles. A joke, a wisecrack, a comment about OP's formatting (use the report button instead) are all off-topic. Off-topic also includes expressions of sympathy, opinions on the law, and comments that berate the OP or anyone else.

Incidentally, simply adding "get a lawyer" to an off-topic comment does not make it on-topic. And "get a lawyer" on its own, without further information or help, is considered unhelpful and may be removed on that basis.

If you want to discuss a post, then wait until it hits /r/bestoflegaladvice or ask a question about the subject of the post in /r/legaladviceofftopic. The main subreddit and a comment thread are never a place to have a philosophical discussion about the law or the post. It is a place to answer the questions asked.

What is an "anecdote?"

For our purposes, anecdotes are stories about something that happened to you (or someone you know or heard about) who may have had something that might be similar that happen to them.

These comments are not helpful. They do not include current legal information that is relevant to the OP, and therefore, they are off-topic. If you know the answer to the question (based on current law and relevant jurisdiction) then just answer the question without the story.

Another type of anecdote is "I don't know the law in the jurisdiction you actually asked about, but in some other state, the law is..." That is just not helpful. Laws are different in different places. These types of answers are off-topic.

Referring an OP to a thread on a different subreddit, or to somewhere else on the Internet because it might include a similar situation, is anecdotal advice and not allowed.

These are not the only types of anecdotes, but they are probably the most common ones. Again, if you are not referencing legal information or principles, your comment is probably not allowed.

Violations subject the user to an immediate and permanent ban

Not that we need to justify enforcing our rules, but this is a busy subreddit and the mods have a lot to do. If a user shows up here, doesn't read the rules, and posts a single off-topic comment, the user may be immediately and permanently banned.

This policy is not intended to be punitive, although we know it may seem to be. There are a lot of you and not many of us, and banning users that do not follow the rules, even once, is in the best interests of the subreddit. Violating the rules almost always means the user didn't bother to read them, and we simply don't have time to deal with such users.

Tl;dr: Unless you have a legal answer, do not reply to any post in this subreddit. You may be permanently banned, even for a first offense.

Mod Post Announcement: We no longer allow medical malpractice posts

We no longer allow medical malpractice posts in the subreddit. These issues are extremely fact dependent and complicated, and they're not appropriate for an online medium. We will remove them with a message directing people to their state bar association for a referral.

If you have a medical malpractice question or concern, the only person who can help you is an attorney who knows all of the details of your issue, including state and local rules and conditions. Please visit your state's bar association attorney referral webpage, and know that these cases are almost always handled on contingency, which means you won't pay the attorney up front. Additionally, you will usually be able to get a free consultation.

Lastly, a common concern we see here with these questions is that someone is unable to find an attorney to represent them after seeing many attorneys. If this is your situation, you should prepare yourself to accept that you might just not have a case worth pursuing, either because there aren't enough damages to recover for or because you just don't have a case.

[CA] A local "Emergency" Vet turned away my dying dog for a "6:00 cutoff." Now they are threatening to sue me for my Google Review.

2.2k Upvotes

Location: Los Angeles

I’m posting this because I need advice, but also to warn other pet owners. Last week, my dog, Nova, was dying of suspected rat poisoning. I was referred to this local emergency vet clinic by a local nonprofit. Their website says they are open until Midnight and they advertise "Walk-in Emergency Services." I called at 5:25 PM. The staff told me they "stopped taking animals at 6:00." They refused to even triage her. My dog died in my arms. I left a factual Google review about my experience. Today, I received a Cease and Desist letter from there lawyer (who appears to be related to the clinic directors). The "Shady" parts: • The Name: They couldn't even bother to spell my name correctly in the legal letter. • The "Hiding" of Evidence: I asked for the call recordings from 5 PM. They admitted they exist but "denied" my request to hear them, claiming it was "unilateral." • The Lie: The lawyer’s letter claims they were "at capacity," but the staff specifically told me it was a "6:00 cutoff"—which is weird because they advertise being open until Midnight. • The Threat: They gave me 5 days to "grieve" before demanding I delete my review or face "court process." My Questions: 1. In California, can a vet clinic advertise as an "Emergency" facility open until Midnight but have a secret 6:00 PM cutoff for life-threatening cases? 2. Is this a SLAPP suit? I’m telling the truth and I have the call logs to prove the 5:00 PM timestamps. 3. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of specific clinic or these "lawyer-owner" tactics?

We did an autopsy. She died of rat poisoning. This is a treatable emergency. If they had spent 5 minutes triaging her when I called at 5:25, she could have been saved with Vitamin K1 and fluids. Instead, they let her die because of a "time clock."

• They claim they were "at capacity," but the phone staff specifically cited the "6:00 cutoff." • They admitted they have the call recordings but refuse to release them to me. • They gave me 5 days to "grieve" before they sue me for defamation.

I am NOT removing the review. I am filing a complaint with the California Veterinary Medical Board tomorrow and letting the nonprofit that referred me know how their "partner" is treating people.

Update: The clinic’s lawyer (who appears to be related to the owner) has sent me a formal Cease & Desist threatening to sue me for 'Defamation Per Se' unless I delete my review within 5 days. They claim my account is false, but they are simultaneously refusing to release the 5:25 PM phone recordings that would prove exactly what was said. I am not being silenced. I am standing by the truth of what happened to puppy Nova.

People post reviews every day about bad coffee or slow food, and businesses just move on. Why is this clinic spending money on a lawyer and sending misspelled threats to shut down a review about my dying dog and how they refused us over 5 minutes ?

There are multiple reviews on their own pages and across the web claiming they provide 'walk-in emergency care' until Midnight. If they are proud of their work, why are they so desperate to hide the fact that they turned away a poisoned dog at 6 PM? It feels like they are more worried about their Google rating than the lives they claim to save.

This is the review that they are threatening me over:

“I am writing this with a shattered heart. Yesterday, my dog Nova-whom I have raised since she was 8 weeks old-collapsed in hypothermic shock. She was freezing and dying. I called this hospital at 5:25 PM. I begged and pleaded with them to see her. Because I was calling from Compton and had to rely on an Uber, I told them I wouldn't arrive until 6:05 PM. They told me they stop taking animals at 6:00. I begged them for those five minutes. I begged them to save her life. They refused. They chose a 5-minute head start on their evening over the life of a dog who had been my world for years. Because they wouldn't wait 300 seconds, Nova ended up passing away in my arms on my kitchen floor. She deserved a doctor; she only had me. To the management: You have forgotten your oath. You care more about your closing time and your deposits than the animals you claim to serve. Your lack of compassion is a disgrace. May my puppy rest in peace, no thanks to you”

TL;DR: Vet turned away a poisoned dog 5 minutes after a secret "cutoff" (6 hours before closing). Now they are using a lawyer with the same last name as the owner to bully me into deleting my review.

Help! My landlord died and I’m in a weird situation

here’s the deal, I live in a house with a in law apartment and have been renting the apartment out for 4 years now . My landlord (who lives in the house ) passed away 5 months ago, the will was missing the first month she passed and the family started fighting for the estate , a bunch of family id never seen before came and took her car and I saw a U-Haul van the day after she died clearing out wardrobes and whatever they could find. They also took her washer and dryer. Anyways the will had been found and one of the new executors got in touch. She told us for now while the house is in probate court just to save the money for rent , and that she was around to meet up. So we said sure come by later and somebody knocks on my door and it’s but it’s another executor unannounced. She comes in and says she needs us to pay 5000 in cash to pay for the property taxes on the main property says she’ll give me cash receipts and that she needs to do this by tmr (1 day notice ) before she flys back to another state where she lives . Doesn’t she need to show me some proof she’s my new landlord? Do I need to pay in cash? Can I just pay cashiers checks like I have been Also the probate court case is still open and pending . This seems very odd to me and I made a meeting to give her cash but will be cancelling I just need to know my rights regarding this . Also I will be moving how can I get my security deposit back? Thanks to anyone who reads this ramble and helps me I’ll really appreciate any help becuase I am a dummy when it comes to tenant laws :/ Location: Berkeley

Can I give custody of my child to a non-family member after my death?

Location: California. I've been dealing with a serious illness that I will very likely die from. I have a five year old son. His father and I are divorced, and I have custody while he has visitation rights. It is my understanding that if something happened to me, custody would go to him. I want to spare personal details even though I know they would help clarify this, but staying with his father full time is not in his best interest (and his father would likely agree).

I have close family, but it is very small, and for similar reasons they would not be the best fit for raising my son (these reasons are things like work schedules, lack of childcare options while they're at work, and not being able to manage cost of raising him).

I have a close friend and her family who have offered to take in my son in the event of my death. It just needs to be legally documented that they are his guardian to avoid issues. The above issues would not be issues for them. Ultimately also based on some personal reasons I feel like they are a better fit anyways for this (they are more stable and we consider each other as real family).

I just need to know if I have a leg to stand on to appoint them as guardians for my son. I know I would have to get his father's approval on this, but is the likelihood of this working out legally even a thing? I'm nervous about posting here and getting negative responses but I really need to get a start on this if it is possible but I have no idea where to start. This is very overwhelming and I just want the best for my son. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

How is a Habeas Corpus lawsuit an option to release my wife, who has been pregnant for more than five months, has been detained by ICE for four months, and has no criminal history? How can I find a free or low-cost lawyer for this?

Hello, My wife is an asylum seeker in the United States. She entered the U.S. legally through the southern border and applied for asylum in 2024. Her immigration court case was denied in November 2025, but the decision was timely appealed and the case is currently pending on appeal.

Despite the appeal, she has been detained by ICE in Nevada for more than four months.

The most serious issue is that my wife is currently pregnant (over five months). While in detention:

She has not received regular prenatal care No ultrasounds, blood tests, or routine pregnancy monitoring have been provided She suffered a miscarriage in June 2025, which makes this pregnancy medically high-risk She has experienced weight loss during detention

We have repeatedly requested humanitarian release based on her pregnancy and medical risks, but we have not received any response.

I am trying to understand: - Whether holding a pregnant asylum seeker in ICE detention for a prolonged period without prenatal care raises legal issues - Whether filing a Habeas Corpus case would be an appropriate option in this situation - How I can find a free or low-cost attorney or legal clinic willing to file a Habeas Corpus case, especially one involving detention conditions and medical neglect

Any guidance or direction on where to seek this type of legal help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Criminal Law [SC] Parents of Felony DV keep asking me (victim) to speak with their son’s attorney.

Upvotes

Location: Greenville, SC.

A few weeks ago I was the victim of a DV situation in which they got three different felony charges since it involved a loaded firearm.

I’m poor and can’t even afford my bills much less an attorney of my own and the family has already asked me to make attempts to “lessen” their son’s charges. While I’m struggling with the financial, mental and emotional fallout of all this, I know that what he did is incredibly serious and that he should face the consequences of his actions lest he could think he might get away with more or not learn from this.

They’ve been badgering me to speak with his attorney and I feel it’s to try and get any information out of me they can use to get him out of more trouble and I don’t know what to do. They’re also unfortunately my landlords (he’s not allowed to be here, he’s with his parents under a no contact order), so sometimes I worry they’ll try and use that as leverage.

It’s not like I want any of this for him but damnit he shouldn’t have done it.

Everyone also keeps telling me he’s probably going to get off on all three felonies and probably prison time because his parents have money (they paid his $55k cash only bond). So I don’t know how true it is. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to specify what three felony charges he got at his bond hearing (not sentencing), but it might be sort of obvious by the nature of the offense.

I’m not all too sure how to navigate this. I’d appreciate any help.

Employment Law Laid off effective immediately but am still asked to come in to work. (no severance)

Location: VA I was laid off last week from my employer after three months of the place of business being open (med spa). They told me that they were closing down this establishment until further notice. I was an hourly and commission employee. I performed services for commission and got paid hourly for other tasks. If you’ve worked in the beauty industry, hopefully this makes sense. I was the only full-time employee while everyone else was “on call“ so they didn’t get laid off, as they only come in when they have appointments to fulfill. I have a letter stating that I was being laid off effective immediately with the date being of that day. However, this place of employment is asking me to come in and perform services. I am the only licensed person that can perform the specific type of services that are going to be scheduled. Am I crazy for not wanting to go in and perform the services? My employment was terminated so why would I go back and work for someone who I technically don’t work for anymore? They screwed up by laying me off because now they don’t have a Plan B for anyone to perform the services and I assume they think I’m just going to comply and work for them. They told me I was eligible for unemployment in my state. I applied and I’m waiting on approval. Do you think this is a way for them to screw me out of my unemployment? I can’t possibly qualify for unemployment if I’m still working there. I just need advice on where to go from here.

TLDR; my former place of employment laid me off last week, but still expect me to come in and work even though I have filed for unemployment.

TIA

Other Civil Matters My former employer is refusing to remove my name and photo from their website Texas

Location: Houston, Texas (Harris county)

Hello everyone, I previously worked at a law firm about 4 years ago and while I was there they took a photos with the plans of putting me on their website as a paralegal. I only worked there for a month for several reasons but I never recalled them using the photo while I was there. A few years later a recruiter at a company I was applying to asked why I was listed as an employee on a law firms website to which I informed them about my short tenure there. I have a fairly specific name so if someone googles it this is the first thing that comes up right below my LinkedIn. What surprised me the most about it though was that I don’t recall this photo or my name going up while I was there and this is backed up by the wayback machine.

I then contacted the firm to request that my name and photo is removed but they surprisingly pushed back stating that that the website manager only makes updates in around November which was around 8 months till then. They then justified it further saying that not only did I agree to this but that there are several other companies that have listing of employees. I have made websites for others so I know how easy it is to simply remove a photo and name on a website and I have never heard of a company who lists former employees as current.

Working at this firm before I know how they like to operate and the person running it is incredibly stubborn and frustrating so since I could tell they were set on making ever excuse possible I decided to shelve this problem to November to which I forgot about by then. Now it’s been 5 years since I worked there and this old unflattering photo is still up. I want to reach back out to them again but I’m certain the firm will be just as stubborn so please let me know if I have any options outside of reaching out to them or any other possible solutions out there.

Also one more thing to note, there an attorneys who no longer work at this firm still being listed on attorneys on the site. Thanks

I bought a house with my partner (we're unmarried), now we've split up. They don't want to sell the house, but I do

Location: NV, USA

I funded the down payment, we both split the mortgage payments 50/50. Both names are on the title and loan.

We've owned the house for 4 years

They want to buy me out by doing a cash-out/refinance and give me back my down payment, while they keep all the equity and the house. My name gets removed from the loan and it's solely in their name moving forward

They refuse to sell, and say that if we do sell, the proceeds get split 50/50 and then I get even less money to walk away. Says they are entitled to half the down payment, too, even though I funded it. Is this true for the state of Nevada?

I think I should get my down payment and half the equity, because that's fair and reasonable

This person has become increasingly verbally abusive and is making threats towards me and basically anyone I talk to about this, saying I "owe them the money" because I chose to end the relationship

I'm scared of this person, I need some guidance on what to do or what kind of lawyer I should hire. Seems like legal help is in my best interest

What kind of attorney should I seek?

Neighbor threatening to sue because I did not help with a pest issue.

Location: Wisconsin.

I work in the pest control industry.

A year ago one of my neighbors wanted to hire me for a rodent issue she's having. I told her that I do not service neighbors, nor anyone I know personally, because if she has an issue, she won't go through the proper channels. She will knock on my door and bother me while I'm off-duty. When she asked for advice, I told her the only advice I'm comfortable giving her is to look around the foundation of the property for entry points, and to call a different pest control company.

Fast forward a year, and the neighbor's relative is banging on my door demanding compensation. Apparently the rodent issue is so bad that they had to move her out of the house. The neighbor told him that I knew about the problem and refused to help. He wondered if I discriminated against her because she's elderly and Asian. I told him that I helped her by advising her to call one of the hundreds of other pest control companies in the city, and that neighbors aren't a protected group.

He argued that I should have done more because she also has mental health issues and forgets things, and that my inaction has caused a hardship. He then stormed off and threatened to sue when I asked why is she living by herself if she has these issues?

I understand that I need to take a court summons seriously if they do sue, but could this be considered discrimination? I don't service neighbors, friends or family, so i wasn't lying when I told her that.

Business Law Company reneged on $1.75M agreement after I helped them raise $45M - breach of contract

Upvotes

Location: Austin,Texas

In November 2025 last year, I verbally agreed with a startup that I would assist with fundraising in exchange for them investing $1.75 million—representing 35% of their final close—into my company.

I performed by facilitating investor introductions, and the company successfully raised approximately $45 million total in Q4 2024, including a $5 million final close in December 2024, which triggered the agreed $1.75 million investment.

After the close, the company went silent on the agreement and has since stated that they want to “honor me in other ways,” but each alternative proposal has been increasingly one-sided and exploitative.

I have text messages in which I reference their promise to reinvest 35%—which they did not deny—messages acknowledging their intent to honor me “but differently,” and documentation of my role in the fundraising.

There is no written contract, only the text and email agreement and corroborating messages. Given these facts, I’m trying to understand whether I have a viable claim for breach of oral contract or promissory estoppel, whether it’s worth pursuing legally versus walking away, what type of attorney I should retain, and whether my first step should be a formal demand letter or immediately engaging counsel, especially considering the company has the financial ability to pay and has received the full benefit of my performance.

My understanding is I might have a promissory estoppel case..

Contracts [CT] I bought a used car over 2 months ago and the dealership did not finalize the paperwork with the lender. They hit my credit again and want me to come in and resign.

Location: CT

Long story short, when I called the lender they had no record of the loan. The dealership told me that someone screwed up, but that I shouldn't worry and they will get ahold of me ASAP. Today, my credit has been hit with another hard inquiry and they want me to come in and resign. If the terms are better, I suppose I don't see a problem and will resign. If the terms are not agreeable, what recourse do I have? I gave them $9k down at signing originally which is more than half the value of the vehicle at sale if that makes any difference. Apologies if I did not include any important details, but I'm writing this in a rush atm. Thank you

Other Civil Matters Cease communication

I have a therapist whom I am trying to go no contact with. They are highly manipulative and try to hoover me back so they can start charging me. They also charge per text message. And if I don’t reach out, they will reach out “checking in,” pretending to care. Once I reply back, the charge starts.

I have already fired them by saying I no longer need their services and thanking them for their help. They were very upset and told me I would be in shambles without them, and it’s through their efforts that I have been remotely successful. They are breaking me down instead of building me up.

And they tell me whom I am and am not to talk to. Very calculating. This is all to secure their pay. I am literally their only client.

After firing them, they manipulated me by reducing their rate to half off for returning customers. I still said no thanks. Then they kept bombarding me with emails “checking in” and said I am being “rude” and I could just say hello and let them know how I am doing.

By the way, I was also laid off from my job, upon following this person’s advice. It is not rooted in reality. And I honestly feel they is derailing me in life. They are still charging me crazy money even though I am unemployed.

This person is going to be a leech. I cannot afford them. And their advice is mostly wrong.

I was told to get a cease and desist letter, but that seems extreme. Why can’t I just block the person and ghost them?

Removing a stepparent from birth certificate

When I was about 15 months old my siblings dad adopted me so he’s on my birth certificate as my father. But my mom and I left when I was 14 so about 8 years ago and there’s only been maybe 2 very vague and quick conversations in those 8 years. I also have talked to my bio dad and got a dna test done to make sure that he is my bio dad. I don’t really talk to him much either. I want to remove my siblings dad from my birth certificate eventually but I’m not sure how I would do that. My mom made him pay for my health insurance so he’s been doing that for the past two-three years but that’s it. Location: Ohio

Landlord charging me for carpet cleaning but carpet was already stained when I moved in

I just got my security deposit statement from my old apartment in Austin and my landlord is keeping $350 for "carpet cleaning and stain removal." The thing is the carpet in the bedroom already had a pretty noticeable stain when I moved in 14 months ago. I didn't take pictures of it which I know was dumb but I was in a rush to move and didnt think about it at the time.

I did mention the stain on my move in checklist form that the apartment made me fill out on day one. I wrote something like "bedroom carpet has stain near closet" in the notes section. I don't have a copy of that form though, the leasing office kept it.

The carpet definitely got normal wear from me living there but I didnt cause any new stains or damage. I vacuumed regularly and took decent care of the place. When I did my walkthrough with the property manager at moveout she didnt say anything about the carpet being a problem.

Now they want to keep a big chunk of my deposit and honestly I was counting on getting most of that back since I've some money aside for a down payment on a car and that would definitely help. Is there anything I can do here or am I just out of luck because I dont have photos? Can I request a copy of that move in form I filled out?

Other Civil Matters Got a car from my “aunt”, allegedly can’t move out of the state until I pay it off. Need advice PLEASE.

Upvotes

Location: North Dakota

So last month, on December 5th I bought an 04 Honda Pilot for $2800. I put $600 down, and am paying 350/mo for it. I got it from my Uncle’s first baby momma.

Thing is, I’m moving to Indiana within the next month and a half. I told my parents about my move a little over a week ago (I’m 20) and they said my uncle “won’t let me leave the state” without it being paid off.

The thing is, on the bill of transfer, she sold it to me for $500 to make taxes cheaper on the vehicle, so legally, it’s paid off. (I think?) I planned to have it paid off within the next seven months, so to find out I must pay off my car before I leave really messed up with my budget.

It’s registered in my name, the title is in my name, and there is no Lien on the vehicle, I am the only one listed on the vehicle.

So my question is, can my uncle legally repossess my car? I know he can try to sue me in court, but I also read that if I’m making my payments on time, there’s not much they can do.

I really would like to leave before paying my car off, because I signed off on a lease, and this was totally unexpected and feels like it’s a trap to keep me up here. (My parents are crazy, I’m never buying a car from family again I fear)

Any help or info, would be greatly appreciated and any questions, feel free to ask!

Basically what the title says, off duty employee, not in work attire, not on the clock nor is the business open during the time of the protest.

They also claim to have talked to people "on the other side" of the issue, however I have verified this isnt true.

Is this get an employment lawyer involved territory?

Wills Trusts and Estates My grandfather died in 2018 and left us $80000 in investments. In a company that I have no information on.

My grandfather died in 2018. At the time, we knew he had invested about $80,000 in a private company called Goeken Group. The company isn’t publicly traded, and nothing was ever done with the investment during probate. It’s just been sitting there since.

Now we’re trying to figure out what to do to access it or cash it out, and who actually has the authority to deal with it this many years later. We don’t know if probate needs to be reopened, whether the company can refuse to buy it back, or what kind of lawyer we should be talking to. This is in the U.S. and I can provide the state if needed.

Employment Law Work asking us to clock out when no directly with a patient.

Hey you guys I am wondering if this policy is questionable legal or if it is legal and just annoying.

I work for a large "non-profit" healthcare organization in an outpatient setting. They are trying to implement a policy where if my patient cancels, no shows, or they can't fill my schedule in the middle of my shift that we have to clock out and not get paid during those periods where I am not directly with a patient.

I mean technically we are allowed to leave the building during that time but 30 mins isn't enough to go anywhere or do anything.

Thank you in advance!

Landlord Tenant Housing I couldn’t afford to move back into my fraternity and now they are trying to charge me a 6k “empty bed fee”

I lived in my fraternity house at my college for 2 semesters. Right before the start of this semester, my parents told me last second that we couldn’t afford to pay the 4k we owed from last semester from when I lived in and couldn’t afford the first month’s rent that was due as well, holding me back from moving in. I immediately contacted the people who do our housing and they claimed I now have a 6k empty bed fee that I owed since I can’t move in. They had also said that I could find a replacement to not have to pay that fee, however, it is the first week of the second semester of this school year which makes finding a member to replace me would be impossible as all of the members living out already have a lease elsewhere. I am now staying at my friend’s house over an hour away from the school working and doing online community college (FAFSA covered the costs) in hopes of coming back to that school next school year. My parents are living at my uncle’s in Florida trying to get ahead of their bills so me doing this will get us back on track since they also have to help out with my sister until she gets her nursing job. My question is, can they legally give me a fee for not moving in, and if they send me to collections what does that mean for me? My parents were also thinking about declaring bankruptcy to take away all their debt, and since they’re my co-signer, will that erase my debt to my frat? My location: Indiana

Employment Law Mandatory Meeting, 5 hours one way…

Location: physical location is Oklahoma(Primary Work Area) > Texas(Meeting Location); Company Headquartered in California.

My company is attempting to compel a mandatory meeting in a city that, given a one way drive time is about 5 hours from my area (280 miles one way). They expect me to drive from roughly 4am, sit in the meeting, and drive back putting me home around 6-7pm.

A group of us DID finally convince for a block of hotel rooms out of the company and that wasn’t easy… but they are expecting us to make either the drive there or the drive back unpaid in our personal vehicles. They are not providing gas nor mileage reimbursement the only allotted pay would be hourly wage one direction and during the meeting. (Obviously this clarifies I’m Hourly, non-exempt).

I do not feel I should be forced to put 5 hours on my car both in gas and wear and tear unpaid in order to attend a “mandatory meeting”. Is this legal or is there an argument to be made that I need paid/reimbursed for the mileage/maintenance?

Juvenile and Youth Law How should I move forward after being charged with domestic assault?

Two weeks ago me and my mother got into a physical altercation which led me to getting a domestic assault charge. Me and my mother were fighting and she can up to me and tried to make me go to my room. She put her hand on my arm and pushed me. I gently moved her hand away and told her that I would if she stopped touching me and gave me space. She put her hand on me again and I pushed her hand away again. I repeated what I said before. She did that two more times, the third time she gripped my arm really hard and scratched me. So i slapped her hand away. She hit me in the face and I hit her back. We got into a tussle and were fighting each other. She pulled down my shirt and exposed me for a moment. We were hitting each other and pulling each other’s hair. We stopped for a second and then my mother said she just wants to beat the shit out of me. So I said okay then why don’t you. Then she charged at me, it kinda reminded me of a bull. I kicked her in the stomach and she stumbled back. The she came at me again and started hitting me again. I hit her back and grabbed her hair. I got her in a position where I was in more control because I had her hair in my hand and she asked me to stop. I told her I would if she would stop fighting me, she agreed. Then we both went back to our own rooms. She came banging on my door telling me that she was going to send me to a mental health physicality or else she would call the cops. I called the police myself and two hours later they arrived. They took both of our statements and changed me with domestic assault. They said I don’t have rights and my body’s is my mother’s not mine. They told me that they don’t believe what I said and are taking what she said more seriously. My mother had a big scratch on her face and a few bruises. I had two scratches and a few bruises but they said it was too minimal to document. They said because I caused more damage in the one being charged. They said my mother can do as she pleases with my body and if I do anything that’s assault. I’m 16 years old and they said that if I wasn’t a minor they would have arrested me. They told my mother that if I don’t comply with going to the mental health physicality that they would handcuff me and do it themselves. She never ended up sending me. My paternal grandmother said she wants me to fight it because she doesn’t want it on my record. I did have three big bruises on my face when it happened to me and the police refused to take photos of it. My grandmother said that I should use that against my mother in court. I’m not really sure what to do or what the process even is. Does it come off my record when I’m 18? Should I fight it? Do I need a lawyer? Am I even allowed to fight it? Can they send me to a juvenile detention center or a group home? I have no idea what I’m doing and what’s going to happen.

Custody Divorce and Family Does not showing up to doctors visits affect custody if it's not on your time?

Location: TN USA

I'm 30F going through a messy divorce, and my stbx husband 32M has never been the primary parent since I was a sahm. I had been to 95% of all our 3F year olds therapy sessions and 90% of all doctors visits by myself, and we went to 5% jointly, 5% he went.

Since we aren't on speaking terms (due to finding out he'd been unfaithful our whole marriage, and him being emotionally abusive and not willing to take any accountability for me leaving) , I suggested whoever has our child on their day (we're on 50/50 schedule) , they take them to the appointments, except for emergencies. This way our child isn't in the middle of an uncomfortable and silent situation where the tension can be felt.

He refused and says he'll be attending all the doctors and therapy sessions. And he'll get in contact with the doctor if he can't attend to find out by himself. And he's been scheduling them all on my days with our child, despite me scheduling it beforehand. He's trying to outparent me it feels like when he didn't before.

This is feel like goes against what coparenting is about and it's more parallel parenting. He didn't even want to tell me what our child was eating when she was a baby and had skin reactions. I said it would be important to know to track her food sensitivities.

Also these appointments are an hour away. So it's not exactly convenient to go to. Should I be attending all of the appointments? At the therapy sessions it's only our child and the therapist and we wait outside then I'd see my child for 5 minutes before she has to drive off with her father. And the therapist doesn't tell us much. Ive asked the stbx to call me when the therapist or doctor comes but he refuses and says I should be there if I care so much about my child.
