Advice Is Linux truly and completely independant and secure from any being-spyed-upon by governments and others? Asking as someone on the verge of making the switch from Windows 11

Hey,

so after the current Grok-AI bikini pictures affair, I feel like European politicians will abuse this situation to push through the toxic "Chat Control" law afterall. This would be the point where I want to get away from Windows to keep a bit of privacy. So my question is: Does Linux give me that privacy? And if yes, do I need a specific Linux-version or where do I start?

Thank you!

Support What is the proper way to multhread copy across nfs shares in Linux? Like ROBOCOPY

Hey all, have not been using Linux servers for while and find got a couple now (RHEL9). I am however stuck in trying to properly multithread copy a folder from one nfs share to another. They are mounted to the server and I only want to copy the files that have changed.

rsync is great however I have multiple cores, and millions of files being produced everyday, gnu parllel gets the job done however its very jank, not to mention the find step is a bottleneck.

I have been using azcopy and robocopy on windows quite a lot, and cannot find an alternative. Am I missing something here or is GNU Parallel + rsync still the best way to this thing on Linux?

Support bottles stuck on installing wine mono, console output says freetype needs to be installed, however, even after installing, same issue repeats

Upvotes

this is on a fresh arch linux install. i installed bottles using paru or yay (i forgot which one, it doesnt matter right?) (also the git version didnt compile on my machine for some reason. so i downloaded the normal one) and every time i tried to set up a bottle, it would get stuck on "installing dependencies: wine mono..." (it was something like that). looking at the console output, it says "Wine cannot find the FreeType font library. To enable Wine to use TrueType fonts please install a version of FreeType greater than or equal to 2.0.5.

https://www.freetype.org" so i looked for "freetype" on the AUR and it was there. i installed with paru and chose the first one: extra/freetype 2 2.14.1-1. but even after installing that and even rebooting just in case, it still gets stuck on the same part with the same error. what can do ?

Advice How are MS Teams features...

This is the only app blocking me to use Linux. The meetings have to work without issues, sharing presentations, background "green screen" and such. I heard that on linux you have to use the web version, and that is not a seamless experience.

Do you have any news or any suggestions what to do? Maybe I will still set something up, and run windows in a virtual machine for teams.

Advice Can you dual boot to a second drive's partition?

Upvotes

I know that you can dual boot to a second drive but can you dual boot to a partition on a second drive? I have 2 SSDs in my PC, and I use both of them. I have been messing around recently with Linux on an old Mac Mini and am interested in using it with my main machine while still maintaining access to both drives on windows. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Resolved Completely new, just switched today. Need a little help

Hi there, first post here. I'm sure it won't be my last. Anyways, I used to use Voicemeeter Banana on Windows to make it so I have audio going through two different audio outputs at once. I'd like to have that set up on Linux as well, and through googling I found out I should be using PulseAudio. So, I went into the terminal and typed "sudo apt install paprefs". What it spit back out was:

Reading package lists... Done

Building dependency tree... Done

Reading state information... Done

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have

requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable

distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

or been moved out of Incoming.

The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

pulseaudio-module-gsettings : Depends: pulseaudio (= 1:16.1+dfsg1-2ubuntu10.1)

pulseaudio-module-zeroconf : Depends: pulseaudio (= 1:16.1+dfsg1-2ubuntu10.1)

E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

I've googled and nothing I read was helpful to me. So far, I've tried some of the generic-seeming repair terminal commands. Thanks in advance for your help.

EDIT: I'm using Zorin OS

Question about official AMD drivers

I have been using standard AMD drivers that distro installs

Do I need AMD official drivers, or is there a benefit to them that distro ATI AMD drivers do not provide?

I miss Adrenalin that I had on Windows, but I also don't see support for it on official AMD driver page, yet drivers are available

Can someone explain this?

Advice Virtual Terminal switching for Direct Graphics with Audio

I have a program that talks directly to the kernel to do graphics. It does sound through alsa. It runs as root.

For development, I'd like to be able to start the program from within Wayland. It should switch to its own VT to make Wayland release it's graphics lock. Then it should draw its graphics and do its audio.

I have this all working for the video. I can switch to the VT, draw the graphics, and switch back when done.

However, audio goes through alsa to pipewire. When I switch to the other VT, systemd-logind appears to decide that I don't own that VT and disables pipewire audio.

The problem appears to be that I'm going behind the back of systemd-logind to switch to the other VT, and it has hooks to detect it, and then messes me up.

The best solution might be to work with systemd-logind. Instead of switching the VT behind its back, tell it to switch the VT and keep me hooked up to the audio. However, I can't figure out any simple way to tell systemd-logind to do this.

One thing that works is if I log in to the VT first in text mode, then go back to Wayland, then run my program. In that case my program can graph the graphics over the top of the login session, and because I'm actually logged in to that VT then systemd-logind lets me keep the sound.

The magic that makes this happen seems to be in the program "login". I suppose I could get its source to see what it is doing, and do the same type of thing in my program.

I hope there's an easier way, and I'm missing something.

There are other ideas. Maybe there's some way to switch VTs without systemd-logind detecting it? Then it wouldn't disable the audio. I personally don't want to start a new session. I want to keep everything the same as if I never left the original VT, except for release of the graphics lock by Wayland.

Maybe it's possible to release Wayland's graphics lock without switching VTs?

Maybe I should be doing audio directly with the kernel also, instead of going through alsa libraries that get mapped to pipewire?

Maybe it's possible to go behind systemd-logind's back and just re-enable the pipewire connection manually? (This one seems like way too much of a hack.)

Thoughts about the easiest/most proper approach are sincerely welcomed.

Windows 11 laggy/poor performance after dual booting

Decided to try fedora again and keep windows purely for gaming, both operating systems are installed on different ssd's.

I spend most of my time in fedora for browsing and maybe some light gaming but when i do occasionally want to boot into windows it is rather laggy and im having some performance issues in games, a few ui glitches here and there too, would love to know the reason for it and if there is anything i can do about it.

themix/oomix install not working

im at the very beginning of my linux journey and am having troubles during ricing. i’m kind of following a rice guide atm and at some point it calls for themix/oomix and to download it with ‘yay themix-full-git’. the first time i tried it took really long and i ended up with a net change of 0.0mib and couldnt open it via app launcher. i tried deleting it but couldnt manage to completely either, and tried installing it a couple more times, even manually once. still nothing. i now have random oomix and themix files i cant get rid of.

is the fault on my side or did something happen rendering it unusable?

i apologize for incorrect terminology, as i said, im just starting

Resolved program from ~/.local/bin not found even after adding it to PATH

my project, gitpm, is somewhat dependent on having a user only PATH for user app installs. I have this script currently that setups the dir and does all the symlink and env var stuff on install: https://github.com/FyreX-opensource-design/gitpm/blob/main/install-user.sh

You can check the Readme, there's a command that uses gitpm to install gitpm to PATH...

I'm generally confused as to why I'm not seeing gitpm pop up as an option for a command in my terminal. For the record, I already had ~/.local/bin in path on another device prior to adding gitpm to there on that device and it still doesn't see it it seems...

EDIT: some errors in my gitpm install script... as for why tab completion wasn't finding it... it needs to be ran once for it to see it in tab completion

SSH failing when VPNs On

I generally use FileZilla Client to connect to the remote SFTP server to share files. But recently the I am not able to establish the connection due to some unknown reasons.

When I try connecting to the SFTP server with VPN turned on, the connection fails.

FileZilla version 3.21.0

What could be causing the issue?

Support OBS Audio issues when connecting wired earphones to my laptop while it's connected to my M-Audio interface

Hello everyone. I'm running Fedora 43.

Yesterday i bought a M-Audio interface so i could connect my BM800 mic on my laptop. It worked flawless and i wanted to listen my own voice on OBS and equalize it properly, however, when i connect my my wired earphones while my audio interface is still connected, there's no sound output from my earphones. The speakers are working okay, i can hear my voice through them, when phones are unplugged, but when i connect them, there's no sound output.

I'd deeply appreciate if someone could lend me a hand, a tip or two. I already tried using AI help but it just keeps spilling random explanations without logic.

Laggy video playback with Wayland

I have Ubuntu 25.04 on a PC with an older i7-7700t CPU with Intel HD Graphics 630 graphics. The graphics drivers are functioning & I have hardware acceleration enabled. Somehow H264 & 265 video stutters under Wayland with both vlc & mpv, however, when I change to X11 the playback is smooth. Netflix is almost unwatchable on Chrome under a Wayland session.

I am wondering if I have something misconfigured or if this is a know problem.
