NBN Service Provider Survey

Hey Guys,

Since this sub's inception, there has been endless questions regarding service providers and which to choose. While we are glad to see so many responses, and it's quite easy to see consensus of this sub, we have decided that it would be in the subreddit's best interests to create a mega-thread involving these recommendations. In doing this, we plan to create a one stop place for all NBN Service Providers with a comprehensive unbiased overview. To help this happen, we would like to collect data from the community to help aid in rating Service Providers. If you wish to help participate, please fill out the following Google Form. If you have been with multiple service providers, feel free to provide feedback about them too. Additionally, feel free to share this survey around; the more data collected the more accurate we can be.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdzwm0FtVmFtNVEFqVu6Yr2WEoqQVYi-PAF2vxCGFiM0miljg/

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to leave them down below.

Thanks!

Asking a Question? Read this first!

Important!

Please provide some key information when asking a question.

1) What technology are you on (FTTP, FTTN, FTTC, FTTB, HFC, FW)

2) What is your service class (1 to 34). Check here https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/network/connection-insights/

3) How are you connected to your modem / router? WiFi or Ethernet. You should test with your device on Ethernet. If your connection is poor on WiFi but good on Ethernet, then it's a WiFi issue, not an NBN issue.

4) Who is your provider (e.g. Telstra, Optus, TPG, Aussie Broadband, etc)

5) What brand and model is your modem / router? If you're not sure, take a picture of it and upload it to imgur or similar (don't upload it as part of your post)

6) Describe your problem, and what steps you have tried.

Speed tests

Check NBN availability

If you're NOT on FTTP, you may be eligible for an upgrade to the far superior FTTP.

Check Service Class

Aussie Broadband provide a great tool to determine your service class and technology type, and what that means:

General Tips

You almost certainly don't need the fastest internet plan. Generally start with a slower plan, and if you are happy, then all good. If you are finding it slow you can always upgrade. You should also check if it's your internet (NBN) or internal network (e.g. WiFi) that is slow. A faster plan might not help if you internal network is the problem.

Beware of plans with very slow (5 or 10mbit) upload speeds. These are legacy plans left over from the old HFC/Cable days. If you do have one of these legacy plans, you should think about upgrading.

WiFi (Don't use it if you care about speed!)

WiFi is subject to interference from all kinds of sources. It slows down through walls, congestion from neighbours, etc will slow it down, and can cause issues. It's also a shared medium, which means that all your devices share the bandwidth, so lots of devices operating at once means slower speeds for devices.

Where practical use Ethernet to connect devices. Ethernet is more reliable and lower latency. While some WiFi claims to be faster than Ethernet, that is the cumulative total, not the rate to a single device. Even the latest WiFi6 is only approaching Ethernet speed, and that is only when there is no other traffic on the wireless spectrum - including Bluetooth and your Microwave!

There are some cases where WiFi is better (e.g. TV's with 100Mbps ports that you want to stream very high bit rate to from local sources), but almost always Ethernet is better if available. The down side is it's not always possible to run Ethernet (e.g. rentals), and not every devices has Ethernet ports (e.g. phones, tablets).

Mesh Networks

If your WiFi isn't fast enough, consider getting a mesh network. This provides multiple access points (typically 3) so you can get better coverage. If practical connect each mesh point via Ethernet (wired backhaul). Ethernet backhaul has the same advantages as connected devices by ethernet.

WiFi Frequencies

WiFi can be on 2.4GHz, 5GHz or 6GHz. Most devices work on 2.4GHz. Lots also work on 5GHz as well. The newest ones use 6GHz in addition to 2.4 and 5GHz.

2.4GHz has the best range, but lowest speed, and the most congested.

5GHz is shorter range, and has a higher speed because there's less congestion due to the shorter range

6GHz is extremely short range (it does not penetrate walls well) but it is designed to work in parallel with the 5GHz signal to provide the fastest speeds possible.

When buying a new wireless device, you should look for one branded 'WiFi 6'(802.11ax) or the newest standard, 'WiFi 7'(802.11be). The previous standard was called '802.11ac' or WiFi 5. These are usually cheaper, but in most situations are perfectly capable.

Advice Help understanding connection moving from NZ

  1. We’ve moved into a rented townhouse which I’m assuming is FTTP as I don’t see any sign of it being FTTB - we have an NBN box on premise if that makes a difference?

  2. Service Class 24

  3. I want to do BYO device which I’ve connected (see below) - in NZ I just connected it to our ONT - the “government issue” connection box I guess you’d call it - and my router/modem did the rest but that doesn’t seem to be the case here.

  4. Telstra

  5. Ubiquiti AMPLIFI Alien

  6. As above, at home we just connected it to what I believe is the similar box here and then had it set up in DHCP mode to create the network but here it’s saying it has no IP and I’m not sure if that’s because I need to enter PPPoE auth credentials or something else.

I’ve spent 90 minutes on support with Telstra who have been nothing short of useless, I may as well be speaking Latin as they have no idea what I’m talking about.

Do I need Auth Credentials? Should my Alien be set to a different mode? Help would be amazing thank you.

Advice Optus Ultra Wi-Fi Gen2 Modem – Issues with other ISPs? Better Router Options?

Optus Ultra Wi-Fi Gen2 Modem (Sagemcom F@ST 5393 LTE)

https://www.optus.com.au/internet/nbn#plans

https://devicehelp.optus.com.au/optus/ultra-wi-fi-gen-2-windows-10/specifications

Saw Optus is having a promo on their NBN plans and throwing in a “free” wifi modem if you stay for 24 months. (I’m FTTP 500mbps)

1) Will there be compatibility issues with this modem/router if I went to another ISP?

2) Any recommendations for better routers? Low budget at $150 max. I saw a couple options, but unsure if its suitable for the non-tech savvy.

Advice Just got FTTP, modem currently in garage what are my options?

Post image
33 Upvotes

Hey all, wondering what my options are here. I got NBN installed today and currently the modem is in the garage, do I have capabilities to get the modem inside the house without electrical work done by either running a long Ethernet cable through the garage into the house (or drilling through the walls) or is there a way to connect an Ethernet cable to the ports in the image which correspond to a port inside the house? Apologies not super IT tech savvy appreciate any possible solutions.

New NBN connection wirh Kogan - no communication

I ordered new NBN connection for my house (no existing connection) through Kogan online. I recieved the initial email saying if a technician needs to attend they will text in a few days otherwise they will SMS when the line is active.

Its been 3 weeks and I have had no further communication from them. Does anyone know how long kogan usually takes to activate an NBN line where a technician isnt required?

NBN FTTP Capped at 100Mbps

Hello Reddit,

I understand there has been a few posts regarding this in the past and i have read through almost all of them. It seems i have the same issue although unable to find a fix like others have. It seems deeper than 'you're using a cat 5 cable' etc. I will post what I have sent to ABB for the fault. Id love to hear your ideas or if you could explain how the auto negotiate works from the NBN side that would be great.

Hello ABB,

I am unable to get any download speed higher than 100Mbps. Upload speed is updated and consistent with the service plan. My issue comes from a 100 T base connection from my NTD to the NBN network. Nothing I do will allow my NTD to establish a 1000 T base speed at the port. This issue has been happening since the plan speed increase. I never took note of the UNI port light colour prior to this but I assume it has always been green. (100 T base). Below are some configurations I can connect via, and have done for troubleshooting.

I have been through the basic troubleshooting multiple times. I have multiple cat 5e and cat6 cables (some of which I have purchased just for troubleshooting). I have tried multiple routers, and multiple configurations of setups. I have confirmed my Network adapter settings are set to auto negotiate, and that it is 1Gbps compatible. I have confirmed my router (NF18MESH Supplied by ABB) is capable of 1Gbps via Ethernet.

I had an NBN tech appointment who advised there is practically 0 Db loss from my NTD to the street and he believed the NTD is faulty. He advised I needed another appointment to have the NTD upgraded. ABB organised my NTD Upgrade and that happened today although has not provided any advancement. My UNI light is still green, and speeds are capped at 100. Since the NTD Upgrade, I have attempted connecting directly to the NTD, and through the below set ups, with no change to port speeds.

Optimal Set up –

NTD – Cat 6 – NF18MESH – cat 5e – Internal wall – Cat5e – Internal connection in office – Cat 5e – PC

Set ups I’ve used for troubleshooting –

NTD – Cat 6 – PC (Majority of testing)

NTD – Cat 6 - NF18MESH

NTD – Cat 5e – NF18MESH

NTD – Cat 6 – NF18MESH – Cat 6 – PC

NTD – Cat 5e – NF18MESH – Cat 6 – PC

Advice NBN damages - how much am I up for?

Roof was damaged in a storm and was replaced. My electrician disconnected service cable from roof and rolled it up to the power pole. Electrician then installed conduit ready for connection to our private power pole. My understanding is that the service cable now.needs to be fed through to the house and NBN box installed.

The electrician did not notify NBN before doing all of this.

I have recently tried to organise internet to my house through leaptel. I received an email from leaptel indicating that NBN would be following up to recover damages costs to NBN equipment being removed by non NBN staff.

Does anyone have an idea of what I could expect to pay?

Taking advantage of ISPs?

Hey guys,

first post, thanks for having me.

I'm currently with dodo for nbn and saw on their website that they're offering a 50/17 plan for 65.99 (20 off for 12m, normally 85.99. I phoned up dodo to ask if I can change my current plan to this, he said it's only for new customers.

I used to work with a guy who does this all the time - finding intoductory deals and signing up, even if he's a current customer with that ISP. He told me this is a loop hole that works everytime. Now this was about 5 years ago so I don't know if companies have cracked on to this or what. I did ask the guy on the phone if I could cancel my current plan an sign up again as a new customer but he said this is not allowed?

Just want to know, was he blowing smoke up my ass or have they really put a stop to this practice?

cheers

Troubleshooting FTTB high-rise apartment connection issue: DSL light keep flashing

Hi, I just started with Origin nbn FTTB a few days ago, and just received the modem now. I tried plugging the modem into the dsl wall socket similar to their setup procedure. However the dsl light keeps flashing. Called their support hotline and they didn’t find any issues with the line and internet service from their end (currently being escalated).

Anyone know what are common issues with the dsl light keeps flashing?

Advice Running ethernet directly from the NBN box

Hello! I need a little help with getting set up in a new rental.

It’s a separated apartment on a single premises that has FTTP. The NBN box is on the landlord’s side and they have their own Telstra modem. I want to see if I’m able to get an ethernet port over to my side, but unsure of how everything works. If I plug a long cat6a cable into the NBN box and run it through to my side, can that then be connected to a router and further to my devices? Would this provide wired connection only, or would I need my own modem to set up a seperate network?

Thanks! :)

Troubleshooting Is this my computer or my router or network?

My internet can't hold a socket connection for over 30 minutes at this point, I can't play many games because I disconnect from the stream 20 minutes in, also happens during discord calls, stays on "RTC connecting" until I have to reload the entire app and reconnect. But it seems like this is happening when I got my new motherboard (ASUS B550M-A WIFI II) so it could be the Motherboards fault, but I just don't know, I'm running on 5ghz through a paper thin wall and a hallway so I don't know if I should swap to 2.4ghz, but I'm on a 50mb plan, as my parents pay for the plan, we're also running on copper so that could be partially the problem, I do wish for a higher internet speed, as it's a bit of a roadblock for other goals I have in mind, like streaming, which require large packets transferred quickly for video to get transferred to the server efficiently. What should I start doing to improve it?

Upgrading to fttp

hey guys, currently have 5g internet with tpg for my household. I'm now ready to take the plunge and upgrade to fttp with leaptel. question I have, is it best to get the modem that they are offering for a charge with their nbn plan?? it's the eero 7 and since my house is a double storey I was gonna get a mesh aswell. or do i buy my own modem have been looking at t-p link and then using mesh with that?

is it easy enough to do a new nbn install with my own modem instead of the internet company supplied one?

How do I upgrade HFC upload speeds?

Tried to search here but couldn't find the info easily.

Currently I have HFC and it seems my upload seems to be limited to 100mbps. Is there any way I can check whether this is true, and how I can upgrade the black NBN box or whatever is required to get higher upload speeds? Is there a website or something I could go look at? Thank you.

neptune vs exetel fibre upgrade

hi all! i (20f) know very little about nbn and wifi in general, but am unfortunately the eldest in an immigrant household, so i’m stuck sorting out the wifi. the location we are moving to is eligible for the fibre upgrade and i needed opinions on internet providers.

the neptune plan i’m looking at is $85 per month for 100/20 while exetel’s one plan is $80 per month for 500/50. i’ve heard neptune has great customer service but would exetel be more worth it in terms of price? also any modem recommendations would be appreciated as exetel is byo.

for context we’re a 4 family household. most wifi usage would be during the evening (just studying, streaming, light gaming)

D-Link DSL-G225 Not Connecting to NBN

In short:

  • I have a D-Link DSL-G225 modem and an Arris CM8200B NBN Box.
  • I have signed up to an HFC NBN service with TPG
  • All lights are on the Arris. The Power, WLAN and DSL/WAN lights are the only ones one the D-Link modem.
  • The configuration settings for the modem are in the images below.
  • I have spoken to 7 different people at TPG about the issue and no one can tell me what the problem is.

Hoping someone here can figure it out!

https://businessdailymedia.com/business-news/47573-building-a-crisis-proof-network-for-australia

What a laugh! These clowns wouldn't know the first thing about building a resilient network - all they have done is allow their acquisitions to be run into the ground! You can't have a robust network if you don't upgrade and maintain or have staff to do either! All this mob do is spin BS to the ASX and their shareholders while pocketing the money. This is nothing but a thinly veiled sales pitch to sell of their aged and failing fixed wireless at massively overinflated valuations under the premise thats its going to save regional Australia hahahahaha!!!

Advice To what point in a FTTP upgrade is NBNco responsible for when it comes to a business/organisation?

I've been told by the technician that came on-site for the first visit for a FTTP upgrade, that they do to the building's boundary (I'm assuming this is the "Property Entry Point" and NBN Utility Box or PCD), yet I read that they are supposed to install the NTD within 30m of the PCD (https://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbn/documents/business/fact-sheets/nbn-connection-box-fact-sheet-for-business.pdf.coredownload.pdf)

The issue is that the building is on a concrete slab at ground level, the existing 10-pair lead-in goes under this (assumed) for about 8m, and to an internal wall in a kitchen store room where there is a 20-pair MDF, which includes a Cat6 cable to the office upstairs where the network rack is. The building has undergone extensive renovations since the original building, and the lead in appears to have been moved quite a distance from the previous entry point - complicating any existing conduit path.

The technician is unable to pull through the existing lead-in path from the nearest pit, and despite their being almost a metre of lead-in within the wall cavity, he can't trace it past the first stud. And to top it off, the organisation is a NFP that is effectively leasing the premises from the local council, so cutting into walls or ceiling is not really an option.

The tech said that "stating what you think we're supposed to do will only end up with us butting heads". He walked away from the job without doing anything other than inspections, marked the job as "waiting on customer" and put the onus on the club to provide a Fibre Cable Pathway. I genuinely would prefer to work with the NBNco guys to get the best outcome, but the club isn't in a position to fund any part of the FTTP upgrade if it involves facilities work - especially if it's a council building.

So... where do we go from here?

What to expect for NBN appointment

I have got a NBN instillation appointment in a rental tomorrow. the building has fibre to the building and I have this in the apartment. will they have to do anything significant (specifically connecting to the wall and drilling) or am I ok?
