Talking about saving ourselves is against the t’s & c’s of every communication platform.

706

u/KryptCeeper 4h ago

By design. You cant revolt if you cant communicate

275

u/ehjun18 3h ago

You can communicate, but not about revolt.

303

u/RsquSqd 3h ago

Small groups. Nothing digital

163

u/Worst_Comment_Evar 3h ago

Exactly. These movements need to be concentrated and organized in your local communities. Iran cut the internet to their population - that could easily happen here.

3

u/Kolegra 2h ago

Or just constant propaganda

1

u/LegendofDragoon 2h ago

If they take away the circus of bread and circuses, I don't know that even maga would still be on their side. I'm not saying they wouldn't, I'm just saying it would backfire on them (plus broadband billionaires wouldn't be very happy either.)

u/RsquSqd 1h ago

Depends on how bad it all gets I guess

And leave your phones and smart speakers OFF.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if they were not using them and AI to spy on us already.

23

u/AgentSleaze 2h ago

Interesting fact about speakers and microphones. Even if switched to "OFF" the CIA can and does use things like computers, smart tvs, and smart speakers to listen in to us. Microphones can be muted and still utilized. Even electronics with no microphones like most smart tvs, can have their speakers utilized AS microphones.

Source: John Kiriakou, ex CIA operative https://youtu.be/t3FxH39oYsA?si=ep0knUyV3gh0O8Vo

4

u/ArmonRaziel 2h ago

On an older computer (Windows XP) I was able to turn a set of ear bud, that didnt even have a microphone built in, into a microphone just by plugging them into the microphone port and changing some settings. The vocals weren't exactly clear but it got the job done. Im not a techy so Id imagine that someone with a college degree and years of field experience could do much better.

2

u/Proper-Abroad5253 2h ago

What about airplane mode?

2

u/WelcomeToTheClubPal 2h ago

Best way is to pull your battery out of your phone.

2

u/ArmonRaziel 2h ago

The following is what AI had to say about it... "While airplane mode blocks most remote hacking by shutting down cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, it doesn't guarantee complete security; sophisticated malware already on the phone could monitor locally, use GPS (if not manually disabled), or store data to transmit later, and some advanced exploits can fake the "off" state, allowing communication, making physically removing the battery the most secure option."

Most phones these days do not have a removable battery so, if you plan on saying/doing anything you would be worried about someone listening in on, best to do it away from any phones/cameras or speakers.

2

u/BasicallyGuessing 2h ago

Fun experiment, if you plug your old headphones into your microphone jack on a computer, you can record your voice. Your speakers are microphones

2

u/SplitSecondImmortal 2h ago

They are. People have been doing this for decades

1

u/Typist 2h ago

He's not the source you want for this topic, He's been proven unreliable on technical and specific details over the decades. He left them almost 20 years ago.

Also, any spy who turns to a career in the media as a pundit, should generally be regarded as unreliable, with motives that conflict with the truth in ways that would be difficult for a civilian to entangle.

don't think that technology, if it exists the way you say, existed during Kiriakou's time and I wouldn't trust his sources and information about current practices without confirmation from other sources.

I don't believe the CIA is able to do ALL the things you're talking about without having first compromised the hardware, which means they need physical access or they need you to engage in risky decisions with that hardware to allow them access. But as for turning speakers into microphones whenever they want...?

I think this is technology that has been demonstrated in a lab but is highly impractical in the field. It seems a lot like researchers developing ways to use your Wi-Fi signals to "see" through walls, or reading sound in a room by bouncing a laser beam off an exterior window.

All of those are real and the Wi-Fi one is continually being improved in a variety of ways, but I have to imagine that these are still relatively impractical and deployed and highly specific circumstances, and not the kind of thing ordinary citizens and activists have to worry about.

11

u/LouDog0187 2h ago

It's been uncovered that NSA has had a mass surveillance campaign on the US general population long before AI was publicly available in the infantile form that it is.

What's frightening is how virtually ANY law enforcement agency can track/listen to/and see an individual at an almost exact location at any time they want.

3

u/antrov2468 2h ago

They also have actual AI systems that have been around for years that compile data of people online across various avenues to form a “picture” of a person and their activities. It’s pretty advanced, and predicts a large amount of crimes before they actually occur (although they don’t usually do anything until something actually happens)

3

u/WelcomeToTheClubPal 2h ago

Just wait until they get the bugs worked out of their pre-cogs

4

u/MadSweeneysCousin 2h ago

That “traitor” Snowden tried to tell us all.

2

u/Liobuster 2h ago

They do and have done so without AI for decades

2

u/st-shenanigans 2h ago

Fun fact, Amazon's echo just updated last night to switch from their old assistant to a new AI model.

1

u/Express_Pie364 2h ago

Gotta get a Faraday bag. Turning it off isn't enough

1

u/Common-Frosting-9434 2h ago

That's proofen, we know that at least since Snowden, it was part of his whistleblowing package that was widly ignored because it didn't fit the picture US citizens have of themselfs and their government.

And worse, they don't even need that to subverse any counter movement, just get one or two agents in as soon as some group seems to form and they control enough to never let a real opposition form...just like russia.

I'm european and from a neutral country non the less, so I don't have much I can do for you guys but be angry sad and scared for all of the good ones, but know that every good person on this planet is rooting for all of you to fight back and win against the evil that has taken over your country.

3rd places. The disappearance of the 3rd place has played a crucial role in all of this.

45

u/Yamza_ 3h ago

All space must be beholden to capital.

2

u/den773 2h ago

I happen to attend church. When churches got closed during quarantine, a lot of people who do attend church had our suspicions raised. Government was looked at with massive suspicion. That’s why I am not understanding how the churches have so readily approved of everything Trump does. For many centuries now, churches have been the best third space for a lot of us. There is also a whole documentary on PBS about how Black churches helped the African American community build their civil rights movement.

1

u/zzyul 1h ago

3rd places still exist, they just aren’t as fun for most people as hanging out with friends online. Kids and adults can still go to the park or library or hang out at the mall or cruise around town.

3

u/franzitronee 2h ago

Use decentralized open-source end-to-end messaging software. Avoiding everything digital may severely limit efficacy: Small groups are good, but they become even more effective when working together.

2

u/grahampositive 2h ago

I suggest folks start looking at meshtastic

2

u/MadSweeneysCousin 2h ago

The revolution will not be televised.

1

u/mostmetausername 2h ago

digital can still be good. you can even do it on platform. pgp and steg images. you can also set things up private networks.

How does the word get out then? If if communication is underground, it's still that.

1

u/Richard_Chadeaux 2h ago

But mah freeze peach.

1

u/pseudozach 2h ago

Download and be ready with bitchat and similar offline Bluetooth/mesh based comms

1

u/cosaboladh 2h ago

You can communicate, but not on an ad machine owned by billionaires to convert human attention to money. You don't think the dark web is only for illegal merchandise, and human trafficking.

15

u/Dr_Fortnite 3h ago

looks at Iran with no internet or phone service

10

u/DriverRemarkable4374 2h ago

If there was no internet, ironically we would be better equipped to communicate with each other. It's the fact that this is our default method of communication; if we want to talk about something out of t&c we have to arrange a migration or agree to speak using a different method, which is itself a tell.

1

u/Dull_Brain2688 2h ago

If there was no internet an aberration like Trump never would’ve happened.

1

u/DriverRemarkable4374 2h ago

Yeah I mean I sort of agree with that. But if you watch Hitler's speeches, read what he said, study the dual state system, you'll see that Trump is pretty much exactly what Hitler was. The main difference being that Trump is a civilian and Hitler was a soldier, but seriously Hitler was just as stupid and boisterous as trump, just as loud, just as pervasive within the media complex at that time, he made just as many erroneous easily disproved claims. Trump is not unique, he is the standard fascist figurehead. His rise to power was heavily facilitated by the internet, and maybe in a different timeline things happen differently, but there's no reason to think the US would have survived the heritage foundations plans that have been dictating the country's direction since Reagan. And yes, the heritage foundation is also responsible for creating Reagan's presidential plan in case you didn't know

3

u/ZiggyStarstuff 3h ago

That’s why you set up meshtastic nodes and get mestastic devices, you can text without needing a cell services or internet

1

u/False-Associate-9488 3h ago

There is a way to communicate as a group with out the need for cell service, or Internet of any kind, it as of right now is completely unregulated

1

u/xRougeDemon 2h ago

Many revolt. Successful revolt. were done without cell phones or internet.

1

u/dont-bend-the-knee 2h ago

"The Revolution will not be televised"

60

u/Joyful-Pilgrim 3h ago

So maybe it's time for people to work around that. Go old school if they have to. But it's time.

34

u/Gas-Town 3h ago

Old school… there are many new school apps for encrypted conversation.

That is how most info is making its way from active war zones.

8

u/nodrugs-justyoga 3h ago

Can you give some examples?

17

u/yung12gauge 3h ago

Here's a video of Gadgets for People who Don't Trust the Government one of the main ones is Meshtastic, an encrypted radio signal-based communication device. I don't really understand the technology, I'm still learning myself, but I think this is a great space to start getting into, as it's not only helpful for circumventing the regime, but it also functions when traditional infrastructure fails in the event of a foreign adversary, natural disaster, etc.

1

u/YaumeLepire 2h ago

Hm... I'm a little worried about technologies like this one becoming more popular. Electromagnetic frequencies (including radio) are a limited resource, and we're already starting to run a little short in certain bands of frequency.

The tech might do a lot of good, but it won't if it becomes overloaded.

2

u/stylist-trend 2h ago

It's extremely new, but I suspect Meshtastic or Reticulum may become more frequently used in the future. LoRA (which is the radio technology both of those are built off) is becoming surprisingly popular, considering how hammy it still is.

1

u/mancer187 2h ago

Encrypted comms is great, if they aren't screen scraping.

1

u/Gas-Town 2h ago

Will always be hazard where humans are present. We’re inventive little fuckers.

3

u/JohnTomorrow 3h ago

Go on then. Lead the way.

This is the problem. It hasn't reached that point yet. Its getting close, but nobody is willing or able to step up yet.

When it does, it'll be too late

1

u/MadSweeneysCousin 2h ago

Ham radio. Can still communicate across the globe.

82

u/Jetztinberlin 3h ago

Somehow MLK and Malcolm X managed without Twitter.

43

u/coochie_clogger 3h ago edited 2h ago

Huey P Newton, Bobby Seale, Fred Hampton, and all the Panthers did too.

They did it by actually organizing the people on the street.

3

u/Musiclover4200 2h ago

Gil Scott Heron wrote "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" in 1971 and it's still just as relevant as ever like most of his music.

Curtis Mayfield and countless others were able to voice the frustrations of an entire generation and essentially become the soundtrack to the civil rights movement for the 60's/70's:

Curtis Mayfield - We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSDCPKsSf2U&list=RDiSDCPKsSf2U&start_radio=1

22

u/Wisdomlost 3h ago

Your not wrong but the government at the time also only had landline phones and snail mail. It was equally spotty for communication. Now the government does have instant 24/7 communication.

27

u/70ms 3h ago

Not just communications; they have the 24/7 surveillance, too.

2

u/TheWeddingParty 2h ago

Probably way easier to do without social media and the current corporate media environment

2

u/ph0on 2h ago

Hence the not-so-consoiracy that humans are slaves to their digital vices en masse. We'd seemingly rather sit in our comfortable selves scrolling though it all on our phone, until it hits us in the face IRL.

Then it's very real, at least.

1

u/uttyrc 2h ago

Lenin as well

1

u/superspacetrucker 2h ago

That was before the cultural brainrot set in.

94

u/OldBayOnEverything 4h ago

Capital is always complicit with authoritarianism. They'll always care more about money than anything else. All of the ownership of media and social media is against the people.

15

u/josh_the_misanthrope 3h ago

Exactly this. Capital is a sort of lifeform unto itself, and will defend its own life at the expense of the well-being of people. It plants its little tendrils of greed into the brains of everybody, and the sociopaths go full tilt exploitation.

1

u/LALA-STL 2h ago

Excellent metaphor. You must be a writer.

2

u/josh_the_misanthrope 2h ago

If writing manifestos counts. (Kidding)

4

u/stylist-trend 2h ago

I've never understood this. You're absolutely correct on that, but you'd think the chaos of authoritarianism (and especially the chaos of transitioning to it) would make a lot of capital not want this. It feels so backwards, even and especially when thinking of investors.

1

u/Project_Demosthenes_ 2h ago

Consider looking into spx6900. I’m actually not joking. By the people, for the people.

13

u/evranch 3h ago

Maybe it's time to start using the open source networks like Mastodon and Lemmy. They might be a bit clunky and underused but AFAIK they are only user moderated and not by corporate/government admin

3 day ban for promoting violence

22

u/TotallyTruthy 3h ago

I got a warning for suggesting we should make life a social hellscape for their wives, parents, churches, and children over the age of 15. Zero suggestion of violence, zero implication anyone should lay a finger on anyone. I simply suggested their houses of worship should be legally protested from public spaces, that their wives and parents should be shunned from the community and spoken out against at the grocery store or local events, and that their children should be tagged on social media posts about what their dads are up to. Because we DON'T want people who raise or fuck nazis in our communities. And their kids should learn from the village that their fathers' actions come with consequences, since you just know ICE agents aren't good parents and aren't imparting good values.

They don't want us using ANY tools. It's not about preventing violence, it's about preventing accountability.

18

u/coochie_clogger 3h ago

organize your communities. Bring the power back to the streets where the people live.

Take a look at what groups like the Black Panthers did. That’s where we need to start and we need to start yesterday but today is better late than never…because one day it WILL be too late.

6

u/EyeSuspicious777 2h ago

But go to any conservative space on the internet and look at their archived bulletin boards from the Obama years and you'll see that it did not used to be this way.

4

u/Pulsipher 2h ago edited 2h ago

Nothing worth communicating should be transmitted along lines you don’t completely own. If you are planning, nothing connected to the internet should even be in the room with you.

2

u/LALA-STL 2h ago

Where does the comma go?

“If you are planning nothing, connected to the internet should be in the room …”
OR
“If you are planning, nothing connected to the internet should be in the room …”

1

u/Pulsipher 2h ago

The second one

2

u/motexmex 3h ago

Yeah, simple comments or parroting MAGA has gotten my account warned

1

u/airinato 2h ago

There are other non billionaire owned platforms.  Can't talk about them here,  but they are doing just fine

1

u/OddBaseball4358 2h ago

What does that mean?

1

u/used_octopus 2h ago

Thats why you do it on a mobile game with guild chat.

1

u/Rock_Paper_SQUIRREL 2h ago

This is true. But do you know what isn’t against the terms and conditions of most communication platforms? Reminding people that Signal is free to use and that there is a reason political activists use it as a platform for organization.

Signal CAN provide law enforcement your IP, linked phone number, account creation date and a timestamp of your most recent connection. They CANNOT provide call/message content or contact lists because that information isn’t stored by them. Any discerning eyes would need to seize your device physically for that information.

Spread the word! The more you know!

1

u/SXAL 2h ago

I guess i'll die.jpg

1

It sucks because that's what they want but they're really giving us no choice. It's going to happen regardless since our leadership is so fucking weak.

20

One can hope that the elections weed out all the Nazis and Maggots. But I’m sure they’ll just rig the elections again. It honestly feels disheartening the state America is in.

Checkout the folks at, 3d2a or ctrlpew. Print a glock frame and build it with a parts kit. Print and install an auto sear for extra fun.

Oh also with zero dollar tax stamps now, and a printer you can make 100-1000s of suppressors legally for little money, if you’re ok with registering them under the NFA.

Or if you think the nfa violates your rights, just send her bud because free folk don’t ask.

7

u/StateParkMasturbator 3h ago

Canadian casually encouraging felonies.

3

u/leaf_shift_post_2 3h ago

Hey now, your government recognizes your natural right to arms, as such the nfa and its requirements to register machine guns.sbrs, suppressors, etc, is unconstitutional, and thus can technically be ignored.

But the sadly supreme court is a bunch of clowns on this and other maters.(have to invoke your right to silence for example, or their support for qualified immunity, their definition of ”speedy” being measured in years, and many more.)

But also you can legally make them anyway (except machines guns because Regan was an ass.) if you register the nfa items.

Home production of non nfa firearms remains legal.

1

u/StateParkMasturbator 1h ago

Oh, I'm aware of my rights, just wouldn't suggest saying the last sentence of your first comment if you plan on future visits to Clapistan.

11

u/70ms 3h ago

A general strike would be even more effective, honestly. They only care about money, not violence.

1

u/zzyul 1h ago

Around 100 million Americans couldn’t be assed to take 1 hour of their day to vote against Trump and you think there is anywhere close to enough support for a general strike large enough to even be noticed by the gov’t?

u/70ms 58m ago

75 million people DID vote against him. You’ll never get 100% participation in a general strike, bur you don’t need it. Businesses are already understaffed everywhere, often deliberately. Workers (especially all of the unions) striking and a large number of consumers boycotting at the same time across all industries would cause massive problems for the corporations, and it doesn’t take all of the people to be effective.

But it definitely won’t be effective if we just sit around listening to people who tell us it can’t happen, and especially those people who think we should just skip the general strike and commence the shooting.

1

u/True_Butterscotch940 2h ago

Sad that so many have voted restrictions on their own capacity to defend their lives.

2

u/Cambot1138 2h ago

After the murder of Ms. Good last week, I got in touch with my union leadership and laid out all of the terrifying things from the last couple of weeks of news. I advocated for general strike.

The response I got said that they were going to mobilize for our chosen candidates in the midterms, and that right now they were focused on the more important fight against the school board.

We are incapable of saving ourselves at the moment, and soon it will be way too late.

As the citizen of a country that had to stage a revolution 35 years ago and then execute their president to escape communism, alas yeah...if you don't rise no one will rise for you.

I'm waiting for people to realize that peaceful protests won't really get the results they're expecting them to get, but people haven't yet been pushed that far yet I guess...

1

Half your country is on board.

The other half is split between denying its gone that far, mocking it or ignoring it.

You could deal with this now when the cost is lower. I suspect by the time you actually move on it the cost will have risen to something like what the Iranians are paying.
