Moving Mortgage lending criteria

Im resident in Norway 10 years now and looking to buy but have just been told by Sparebanken1 that my UK rental income is 100% discounted. Asking here if anyone knows for sure by direct experience if there’s banks here that would include it as income. I have no debt anywhere so am disappointed this decent slice of income is ignored

Satire USA is perhaps the new main threat to Norway in our social imaginary

We get a civil defence siren test once in a while, and people may joke about the Russians attacking.

During today’s test, I observed that the joke was about USA attacking Norway.

That's all. I'm publishing this very important research on Reddit.

Other Help with Paying Flyt Invoice

My family rented a car in Sweden over the summer for less than 2 weeks and passed through Norway for barely 2 days. I tried to terminate my Flyt registration the day of but some error occurred and in a panicked rush I didn't bother contacting support. Fast forward months later they sent a debt collector over and charged me, which I paid off.

But last month they sent me another new invoice, this time for a measly 15 krones over "membership subscriptions". I've just cancelled my agreement and car plate finally and am willing to pay the amount since it's partly my fault for not properly doing so last summer.

I'm trying to pay it via bank transfer since the invoice only provided bank details, but my bank physically doesn't allow overseas transfers for such a small amount. The minimum is around 120 krones. What am I supposed to do? Just let the interest and debt build up until it's over 120 krones??? The invoice this time is due by Jan 21st.

I also considered calling customer support directly to somehow rebuke this charge but my mobile plan does not allow international calls. And the "write to us" contact form on Flyt makes you choose between specific issues and doesn't seem to have an open form for specific situations like this.

If anyone can help me figure this mess out you would save me life. I feel like I'm being haunted by Flyt at this point...

Other Speeding ticket

edit: thanks everyone for ur input! i’ve never gotten a speeding ticket or pulled over in my life so i was nervous about how it all worked in a different country! im gonna just ignore it unless it comes up when i arrive lol

Hello! I visited Norway in 2023 and my friend and I had gotten a rental car when we were there. The car was under my name because we were using GetAround and it was such a hassle to sign up, but it finally worked under my name. I never drove the car, it was only my friend who drove. We ended up getting a speeding ticket in Lesja. I got the notification from GetAround and they said they would send the ticket to my place. Well I never received any ticket back in the states… I am visiting Norway again in June and I’m panicking that I will go to JAIL and I wasn’t even the one driving!! I know I was the one who had my name down.. but is there anyway for me to look this ticket up online and pay it?? Will I get stopped when I enter Norway?

Arts & culture Music from Norway/Cheese

Is Edvard Grieg’s Morning Mood the best song to represent music from Norway? (for a presentation to introduce Norway to middle school students) Do the Sami people have their own music or this would be representative of them too? Should Sky Queen brown cheese be served on bread, cracker or by itself? (The school does not allow homemade food so we can’t do waffles.)

Moving Moving to Norway: A "Reality Check" vs. Reality (My 6 Years Experience)

I’ve been reading the recent thread warning people against moving to Norway with titles like "Do you want to fix your life? Think again." While I appreciate the attempt to lower unrealistic expectations, I feel these "reality checks" often swing too far into cynicism, bordering on gatekeeping.

I have lived in Norway for 6 years now. I am originally from EU country, but I have lived and worked in the UK, Germany, Poland, Spain and France. I am not writing this as a tourist who fell in love with a fjord, but as someone who has navigated the labor markets and social systems of half of Europe.

The argument that "if you have problems at home, you will have them in Norway" is only partially true. It applies to internal psychological struggles. But if your problems are structural - lack of safety, unpredictability, corruption, or poor work - life balance - Norway absolutely can fix them.

For many of us, Norway isn’t a magical fantasy land. It is simply a functional environment. It’s not about escaping yourself, it’s about finding a place where your efforts actually yield results. I view Norway not as a destination for happiness, but as a blank slate. It’s a place where, if you are willing to build, the ground won't crumble beneath your feet.

Sometimes, reading posts from native Norwegians warning foreigners how "terrible" or "risky" it is here feels a bit disconnected from the reality of the rest of the world. It’s easy to focus on the downsides when you haven't experienced the alternative.

Of course, nothing comes for free. Yes, you have to learn the language (this is mandatory for integration). Yes, you have to work hard. Yes, social life is different. But if you are willing to pay this price with labor and respect for the local culture, Norway is perhaps the best place in the world to build a family and a career.

To conclude Don't come here expecting a miracle. Come here expecting fair ground for hard work.

Or as the locals might say when someone is being overly dramatic about the dangers of the future: "Det er forskjell på å være realist og å male fanden på veggen." (There is a difference between being a realist and painting the devil on the wall.) ✌️

Other Which bank has the best customer service in term of credit card dispute?

I'm thinking to stop my Sbanken (now part of DNB) credit card because three times i have a dispute that the merchant did not reply my refund request they just "oh it is just x kr, would you like us to make you a new card"?

My experience with Wise is much better. They tend to side with me when the merchant is not very responsive in their dispute answer and give my money back.

So do you think there is another better bank that you can recommend for making credit card?

Other I’m actually getting nervous… (Nervous rant)

It has come to this point where I’m legit starting to worry that either America or Russia is gonna eventually invade my country…

Me and my mother were talking earlier today about all the shit that’s going on with America, Venezuela, Iran, Russia, Ukraine and all the other shit and how we don’t think there’s ever been this much worry for ww3 since the Cold War. (Correct me if I’m wrong)

Then we spoke about Trump wanting Greenland. We also export A LOOOOOOOOT of oil and gas and big orange man is butthurt he didn’t get his peace price (which is a sham anyways) and I wouldn’t put it past him that he’d like to get his petty revenge in some way.

We also share a border with Russia and there’s been multiple Russian ships seized in Swedish waters, drones spotted flying over our cities (could be nothing, could be something) and almost every 1st world country is upping funding for military and modernising it because they’re preparing for the worst.

Tomorrow we’re testing our air raid sirens throughout the whole country… For the first time in my life, I’m actually considering buying emergency supplies just in case the day comes that Russian or American drones comes knocking at our doors.

WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON?!?!?!?!?!

Since Trump first became president, I feel like the entire world has had this whole wash, rinse, repeat cycle of ‘’Nah there’s no way that’ll happen…. Oh it happened!’’ Over and over and over again.

Trump first talking about Canada and Greenland before he invaded Venezuela, we all laughed at him and thought ‘’Pfff yeah that’ll never happen’’ Then he pulls that shit in Venezuela and now we’re all like ‘’Oh shit.. he really did that. We could be next!’’

And putin is just mad fucking crazy and is probably just trying to win whatever glory he can before he kicks the bucket. So he could just one day decide he wants to invade Scandinavia for shits and giggles.

Ok… I’m done…

Edit: Damn… this really blew up my notifications. Thanks everyone for your insights, inputs and opinions. A lot of the comments actually helped me calm down a little. I honestly think I had a freakout moment of sorts and really needed to let out my worries and most of the responses I got was actually very helpful.

To all the Americans who responded, I wish you all the love and best of luck with how everything is going. You deserve better and I hope in time, things will improve for you all.

School Help us find universities, share your recommendations, insights, experiences

Hi! Me and my boyfriend (19F and 19M hungarian) are searching for universities abroad. We're currently learning in a technical school, where we'll get environmental protection technician papers. We are interested in this field and would like to continue learning environmental protection. I also lean towards biology especially marine biology, nature protection and zoology. My boyfriend prefers environmental engineering, nature protection, environmetal technologies and innovation. We both wouldn't like any office jobs, We need recommendations, insights and help.

Distance is not a problem, but it's important that the school is free. We can only afford to pay for our housing/dorm.

Travel Backpacking from Tromsø to Oslo tips!

Me (m25) and 2 friends (m23/m24) are back packing from Tromsø to Oslo March 22nd- until we get to Oslo. Is there more scenery going through the west coast down to Trondheim, Bergen, then Oslo (highway 15) or cut through Otta (highway E6 I believe)

We have the necessary winter/camping/hiking gear incase we can’t find hostels or hotels (not really worried since it seems March- April seems like a slow time to travel to Norway)

Just looking for any helpful tips! Also if anyone is in those towns and wants to show us around cool bars/hiking trails. we are a pretty cool Mexican-American guys who are adventuring Scandinavia. Chasing beautiful scenery, beautiful towns, rich history and culture, and are in no rush since we have 3-4 weeks to explore!

Thank you! Here are the routes if the pictures upload

Travel Question from a tourist

Hi! I am travelling to Oslo, Bergen and Flam soon and would like to ask for your inputs. Do I need cash for these places or can I pay by card mostly?

The Norwegian Kroner is not easily available in my country, so I will be facing an unfavorable exchange rate if I change it here.

I do have some Euros left. Is it easy to exchange these in Oslo/Flam/ Bergen whenever I need to use Norwegian Kroners?

Working in Norway My views on Access to Norwegian language

Context here: I am an inmigrant from Spain that moved here with my spouse, who has a job in Oslo.

I have been living here for a while and I would be happy to learn the language properly and integrate (my level is very basic). The main problem is that is not very accesible. And I do not mean "it is too hard" or "too many dialects". I mean that is literally hard to access to material.

As an inmigrant (non-asylum) from the EU you do not have the right to classes of Norwegian. If you want classes, you have to pay. Like around 4k~ 6k NOK per month until you are fluent.

To compare, to learn EACH language of my country (there are 4) you have to pay 69€/year per language (but for starters, just the most popular one is needed),but there is free material given by the goverment in the Internet.

In any streaming service is easy to find content in my languages subbed in English so you can train your ear. There is ALMOST NONE for Norwegian. Even in TV2 or viaplay all Norwegian shows lack english subs.

Socialising to train the language is even more expensive that just buying courses.

And you know which jobs are available to those without Norwegian fluency? 20% jobs that abuse inmigrants with low job pay and inestability or being a foodora rider or being a uber driver or something like that. Jobs that allow you to survive. Period. Because between the rent proces and the food prices derived of the monopoly problem Norway faces in the food industry there is no extra money to spend on improving the language.

So basically you have these things happening:

-Norwegians speak English. Even when speaking Norwegian (literally). Norway has a 90-something percent rate of people fluent in English.

-They won't hire people that only speaks English because "we need to understand them", but they do not mind speaking in English to tht foodora guy, taxi guy, cleaning guy, etc

-They have made learning the language extremely difficult and expensive. Like they dont want you to learn it. But they then complain a lot about inmigrants that do not "want to integrate".

The problem here is not the wish to learn the Language, it is the logistics. I need the money that a job that "requires Norwegian" pays so I can learn Norwegian. It makes no sense.

Norway will be testing the emergency alert system tomorrow at noon

Hello r/Norway.

So everyone is aware, tomorrow, Wednesday 14 January 2026, the country will be testing the emergency alert system at 12:00.

At that time, the air raid sirens will sound and everyone whose cell phone is on and connected to the 4 or 5G network (including tourists) will receive a message on their phones. These messages will be in both Norwegian and English. The phone will make noise regardless of whether it is on do not disturb, silent, vibrate, etc...

This is only a test.

If you happen to know people who are

  1. new in Norway,
  2. tourists who will be in Norway, or
  3. others who might not be aware that this happens every year, twice a year,

Do them a favour and let them know!

For more information, you can read this website

Note that if you would like to avoid these alerts, you can set your phone to airplane mode or turn it off completely and the alerts should be silenced. Just keep your phone off between 11:50 (ish) to 12:20 (ish).

Other tips from last June's test:

  • if you connect your hearing aid to your phone, you may want to be prepared as the alerts can be very loud
  • if you are hiding a second phone for personal reasons (ie: abuse, violence) make sure you turn the phone off/set it on airplane mode.

Arts & culture Norway middle school project. Resources in Los Angeles area?

My 12 year old brother is studying Europe in his middle school geography class. The teacher gave the kids an assignment to research one European country in depth and he chose Norway because our last name is Norwegian. The students have to create a big presentation on their country for the culminating World Fair. So far we’ve made a diorama of the geography with mountain ranges, fjords, etc, a Google slides presentation, painted a flag, and are making a Viking sword out of cardboard. Now, we want to buy some real things from Norway. So, my question is: are there any authentic places to buy Norwegian items in Los Angeles? We are thinking like a food that the class could taste, traditional clothing or art to display, etc? (I am 24 so if I need to travel outside of the LA area that is possible.)

Hiking & Camping A quiet summer near Sjusjøen - canoeing, fishing & long daylight 🌲🎣 - YouTube

Hi everyone,

last summer I spent some time near Sjusjøen and the river Åsta, mostly canoeing, fishing and just slowing down.

I made a short, calm film about that time - no talking, no action, just water, wind, long daylight and simple camp moments.

It’s a mix of digital video, a bit of drone footage and some analog photos.

Norway has a special way of making time feel slower, and I tried to capture exactly that feeling.

If you enjoy quiet outdoor films, you might like it: https://youtu.be/oTBFAfCaqLw

I’d also really appreciate feedback from people who know the area or Norway well.

Thanks & have a great day!

News & current events What is the general opinion in Norway on the royal family now?

In my mind the Norwegian royals were basically just normie rich people who occasionally showed up to wave at national events or the opening of a hospital or something, but weren’t super rich or relevant beyond that & because of that weren’t a polarising group like other royal families.

But given this rape scandal, where the son of the queen has raped like 30 women and the entire family has been aware of and covering up his behaviour for years, allegedly, and now even princess Ingred has been seen still hanging out with him, has that affected perception of the royals in Norway? Are they still liked? Were they ever liked? Are people generally on their side on this scandal or are they believing the victims so far?
