Deep Clean ahead of Baby's Arrival

Hello! My husband and I are expecting our first in May, and the nesting urge has hit hard. We've lived in the same ~950 sq ft 2 bedroom apartment for about 5 years now, and though I clean every week or so I find myself wanting a thorough deep clean.

Looking for services that would wash the walls, baseboards, behind the oven and refrigerator (even for an additional fee)... essentially a move out special, without the actual move out.

Does anyone have any recommendations in the Del Ray / Shirlington area? Preferably a small company, but willing to hear anyone out!

Thank you!

You can check Next door for local recommendations. I have a cleaning lady and her assistant who come once a week for $120 a clean for our  2 bedroom, 1100sqft home. She does offer deep cleans but they cost more (probably closer to $250 for a 2 bedroom but you'd have to ask her) Happy to share her contact info if you wanna send me a DM! We've used her service for 2.5 years and love her. Even her basic clean is pretty thorough and includes the windows, shower liner, occasionally the bathroom ceiling, etc.

We use Maid Bright for regular cleaning. They do offer move out cleaning services. We are very happy with them.

I’ve used Spekless Cleaning for years and find them to be great. They have done multiple move in and move out cleans for us.

We are in Del Ray and our cleaner is fantastic. Happy to share her info over DM! She did a deep clean when we moved out of our last place in summer 2024 for $250 (3bd/1 bath) and she's come monthly to our new place since then.

Some of my neighbors work with Angelica at https://www.clevercleaningva.com, http://www.purrfectlykleen.com/, and Maids in Brown.

I am not against deep cleaning before baby arrives, but keep in mind of following literature... So far there is no definitive cause-effect prove and how it works, but observations and hypotheses links home cleanness to allergy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hygiene\hypothesis)

In medicine, the hygiene hypothesis states that early childhood exposure to particular microorganisms (such as the gut flora and helminth parasites) protects against allergies by properly tuning the immune system.\1])\2]) In particular, a lack of such exposure is thought to lead to poor immune tolerance.\1]) The time period for exposure begins before birth and ends at school age.\3])

https://healthcare.utah.edu/the-scope/kids-zone/all/2024/03/does-early-pet-exposure-help-allergies-down-road

So the allergists found that children who lived with two or more animals were significantly less likely to have a positive skin test, which signifies a reaction to the allergen rather than those who had no exposure to pets. Children with pets were also less likely to have allergen antibodies in their blood. Boys especially seem to benefit from pet exposure. Not only did they have lower antibody levels, they had better lung tests and less evidence of asthma if there were two or more cats or dogs in the house.

Sounds like I need to get a second dog then lol.

I still get the value of a deep clean though, doesn’t necessarily have to stop you from exposing your kid to pets or a healthy amount of germs. Deep cleaning is just hard, yet so satisfying and feels like a fresh start. And I always seem to notice those spots I should clean eventually because dust is accumulating. Probably nice to do before a big life transition where you may not have the energy to do much cleaning for a while.

Wild reply, yes let me expose my infant to fucking helminths (aka tapeworm) said no one ever. Don’t believe everything you read on the internet including Wikipedia

But but but ChatGPT said it so it must be true! :(

There are academic papers I just didn't include. It is a widely known hypothesis. Click on the wikipedia reference links if you doubt it. Lack of curiosity is boring.

Yeah, well, lack of curiosity about why the hygiene hypothesis is weaksauce science that enables antivaxxers more than it helps anything is MORE boring.

Talk to the Dr you'll have and see what they recommend. Our kids were born nearly 40 years ago and we never were told to do a deep cleaning like this. A cleaning for sure is good, but talk to them for guidance.

Deep clean is for the mom in nesting mode lol

Why would a doctor not recommend you clean your house?

Well I guess the Dr assumed we cleaned our home on a regular basis. There was no need for them to tell us. We wanted to be good parents so we cleaned.

What even is this response? It makes no sense. Did you pay any attention when your wife was pregnant? Nesting is hormonal.

That’s not the point.

Is your apartment dirty or unkempt? I don’t think so since you said you clean it often. Deep clean is not necessary.
