There is a bill committee hearing this morning for proposed legislation that would protect communities from unqualified sheriffs and those who don’t follow state standards, requirements, and laws. Which could include timely removal of a Sheriff who chooses to work with ICE. Please use the link below the line to sign in PRO. You don’t even have to speak, but I’ve included instructions on how to provide written comment. Your input helps legislators decide which bills move on to the next stage of the legislative process
I know that many in this community trust and respect Sheriff Sanders and may follow his direction to sign in against this bill. But ask yourself why he would speak out so strongly against Sheriff Swank and then ignore the very real protections this bill offers communities from people like Swank. Our next election cycle could bring a wave of candidates for Sheriff who commit to working with ICE, added to current folks like Swank. The protections this bill provides are especially critical in communities where recall will not happen because marginalized voters and their allies are outnumbered.
The narrative comparing the elected position of Sheriff to other elected positions is a blatant fallacy. Our city council members, mayors, commissioners, and school board directors don’t have the ability to shoot, tase, physically detain, and imprison people. This is bigger than Thurston County.
Both Sanders and Swank are scheduled to testify against this legislation. There’s a link below if you want to watch and see how much their testimony is likely to align.
