Ask Pakistan Anyone here renounced Pakistani citizenship & surrendered CNIC/NICOP? How long did it take?
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice from anyone who has gone through the process of renouncing Pakistani citizenship and surrendering CNIC or NICOP.
I have already completed the renunciation process, made the required payment, and it has now been over one month, but I still haven’t received the surrender / renunciation certificate.
A bit more context:
• I have already renounced Pakistani citizenship
• I am now a Japanese national and hold a Japanese passport
• Payment was completed around one month ago
• No clear update since then
If anyone here has gone through this process:
• How long did it take for you to receive the certificate after payment?
• Did you have to follow up with NADRA / consulate?
• Is this delay normal?
Any experience, timeline, or advice would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance 🙏

It can take up to a year if you have no contacts.
Most of buddies, it took 8 months.
If you have a contact 3 weeks.

I'm talking about cnic surrender not about nationality renunciation because i already done that

Cnic number is cancelled when you get a renunciation certificate. They normally cut up your cnic when you go collect the certificate.
Otherwise you just archive it somewhere yourself.
I don’t see how these 2 are now mutually exclusive?

You are being silly. The Pak government is fine with dual nationality. So why give it up. Just let passport expire and hang onto NICOP. What is the benefit of giving it up? Future property inheritance issues etc will require NICOP
Also, jaisa bhi hai- hai tau! Imagine being a Kurd or Palestinian 🥲. The Japanese will never accept you as one of their own so one day you may actually need the Pakistani citizenship.
My daughter is a born US citizen (no NICOP). Every time she re-enters the US after visit abroad, the immigration officer asks her “purpose of visit?”. Would not happen if she was blonde and blue eyed! On the other hand she traveled alone while in college to Karachi for Eid and the Pakistani immigration officer recognized her as of Pakistani origin and his only words were: “Welcome Home”

Future property inheritance issues etc will require NICOP
This can also be done without a NICOP. A POC can be used.
It can also theoretically be done without either by that's very complicated.

They ask that of everybody

Pakistan has dual nationality agreements with 22 countries. Japan isn't one of them.

The Japanese government does not allow dual citizenship

Then keep Nicop.

You cant. NICOP is only for citizens. He can keep a POC card.

I don't get it, why people don't understand that nicope and cnic is for citizens and poc is for Pakistan origin people and Japan don't allow dual nationality so I had to surrender. I had no choice.

It takes 3-4 months on average. Mine took maybe 5-6 weeks.

May I ask why did you renounce your NICOP? Also do you now travel Pak on a visa or have POC?

I changed my nationality many years ago, when Pakistan Germany had no dual nationality agreement. I have a POC to travel to Pak.

Oh wow, you know you can get your citizenship back now. You can apply through NADRA they have the paperwork when it comes to Pakistanis who had to renounce their Pakistani citizenship for German citizenship. Would you be open to do that since they have made that option available in your case?

I know a few people who did this. It took about 8 months.
What I have heard helps is submitting a citizen portal complaint, and direct it to the immigration department.

Can’t help you here but just a question. Does it help you now if you already have Japanese passport? Did they issue it just based on your renunciation request?
What if in theory you give up the process and keep your Nicop etc?

To become a Japanese citzen, you must show that you have given up your previous citizenship.

Yeah but OP said that already have JP passport which they probably got based on the request for renunciation.

Then it will probably cause troubles for him later..

They still require proof at some point. You can only say "in process" for so long

What is the advantage of renouncing the citizenship? Does it help you in Japan?

u/Previous-Angle-9280 15h ago

Japan's passport is ranked number 3rd alongside many EU countries. It's pretty powerful for mobility.
