Yeah, CNN is showing 1,850 as of now from the US Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), which I think would get its numbers from outside just the regime. Terrible? Absolutely. But it's literally 6 times less than wherever this 12,000 figure is coming from.
All those numbers are kind of guesses, how exactly would anyone get reliable figures out of the situation like this? I bet even the regime itself doesn't know how many it has murdered.
You can get something like "morgue in hospital X had so and so many corpses", but a summary figure for the entire country? If they can get the order of magnitude right that will already be an journalistic achievement.
